Perhaps you'd be a fan of 3D maps in general? Leads directly into Plugins like dynamic lighting, bump mapping, 3D models, realistic water and more.
I know that if I were to finish this Plugin it would support static 3D models as well as blocks (place cuboids on the map of varying height). Could likely get animated MD2 3D models in as well, but static OBJ would be simpler for a version 1.
So you'd get things like 3D models for towns/cities on the world map.
I can also imagine having the secondary layers on the map extrude geometry from their alpha value (Minecraft item style) so forests would be raised slighting from the ground. Also, vertex displacements is another thing that isn't far-fetch'd, so that would be PSX Final Fantasy quality world maps.
Pretty much anything is possible, as long as the target device supports WebGL (and is powerful enough to run these things).
