I don't think the whole game was slog.
Disc 1 makes FFVIII a bad game fundamentally. If Disc 1's slog did not exist then we can say it's a candidate for being named a good game. Because of Disc 1's slog FFVIII is debatable if it's a good game. It features bad game design, pacing, direction, etc in Disc 1, but the other Discs feel completely different.

Oh agreed, they could have done 1000% better in the start. I guess that is why I only like the Laguna stuff and maybe the Tomb of the Unknown King (music is badass)

Have you ever stopped and thought about that world map? I haven't played 9 all the way yet, so I can't way, but it felt like the most pointless world map until you hit the end game stuff on Ether. Also love the idea of that isolated nation, crazy bastards.

I only remember slogging through it because I was completely new to jrpg concepts. And without a guide I got stuck in a lot of areas. A lot of bosses. I restarted the game like 3 times before I finally beat Ultimecia.

Fought Elvoret, like 20 tries.
Could not find the Tomb of the Forgotten King.
Got lost in the Tomb of the forgotten King
Couldn't navigate the sewers in time.
Couldn't beat the missile base boss.
Gave up fighting the 2 oilboyles Inside the Garden, restarted the game.
I think at that point I finally learned the Junction system and elemental weakness, because it was like, "hey the enemies here are weak to fire". And I had like 4 fire spells to work with.
I think I had a lot of trouble because I wasn't using the draw command. I was using Attack, G.F., Items, and G.F. abilities like Card, Doom, Darkside. And I kept leveling up, not realizing the enemies scale with you.

Couldn't find the White Seed Ship. (peeked at the strategy guide in the store)
I think I final bought the strategy guide somewhere on disk 3. And restarted the game because I had missed pretty much all the draw-able G.F.s and side-quests. I didn't even know side-quests were a thing! Omg, you can k.o. undead with a phoenix down?! All those hours spamming shiva on T-rex, there was an easier way...
I restarted the game again after making it to Griver, I couldn't survive the Shockwave Pulsar attack.
A lot of heart pounding moments. I almost beat him!

But man, when I finally beat the game I was euphoric.

That ending tho...Good stuff. I always had issue with Oileyboileys or whatever they are. They are bitches. Demi? OK. Thanks for being weak to fire, and not having the next level fire spell anywhere near me anytime soon.

Draw system was a great idea, but garbage. We should have drawn at 100 and then as you battled it was used up or something as well as being able to cast.

Oh, anyone who lives in the States, do you live in the SE?

I'm in Alabama. Main exports are good food and racism.
Same.

Did you read my reply to Daxis?

oh shit sorry i didn't pay attention for a couple days. Yeah, it's still on my list to go to a convention or three, and it'd be fun to meet some people from HBG at some point. What convention is it? I don't have time off available for another couple of months.

I forget, what's a good way to recruiting someone to your team? :P

A large budget.

As for FFVIII, wow, at least I didn't have as tough a time as Coyotecraft. Yeesh. I don't think I would have finished the game if that had been my experience. Honestly though, I loved the cutscenes, and the battles weren't so bad once you had at least one GF per party member (which was actually pretty late in the game for me), and you had learned to abuse the junction system.

@nathanie3w:
Not only was it my first jrpg, it was one of only 2 games I owned for a very long time, the other being Tony Hawk Skateboarding. And I mean, it was 1998.

I was 12 10. We had only had a dos prompt computer, just for word documents. I don't think we had Satellite tv until 2000.
I watch a 2hr block of FOXkids at 4pm And I dunno what else we did to pass time. Climb a tree? I broke my arm twice just swinging off shit and doing flips. Watch a Disney movie for the hundredth time. It was awful.
Oh, my sister and I would roller blade in a small circle in the basement. No wait, that was also after 2000 because we didn't have a CD player to listen to...

Basically, I had nothing better to do. And life before 2000 was really really boring, I don't know how I survived.

I asked my sister if she remembered what all we did for fun. Just - played outside. I remember doing that when we had friends over. But that was fewer than 1 afternoon a week. And only in the summer.
What did we do in the winter?

I guess board games that went of forever were a good thing. I remember playing monopoly and phase 10 a bunch.

When I was young we'd always be playing some sort of sport or game if we were outside. Even if it was winter. We'd usually play football, or sometimes cricket if we had enough people and it was sunny. If we weren't playing sports, we'd be playing hide-and-seek and stuff like that in the local park. If we weren't outside then there'd usually be a few of us at a friend's house playing multiplayer split-screen games. Crash Team Racing, Goldeneye and all sitting in the same room playing Pokémon so we could coordinate who was catching what/getting what fossil all stand out in my memory. Even in my late-teens I'd spend most of my time outside with my friends, only by then we were skateboarding instead of playing football. My ankles are pretty borked from all the skating I did...

All that said, I'm not averse to playing football in stupid conditions even now. Used to play in a league with some friends and we trained in this because it would be funny (it was funny, but also not too clever):

Are you going to die?
I'm cool. Basically, I'm helping my dad with some work on feb 4th and he's giving me some money early, and I'll borrow some money from my bro so I can pay this months rent, The only issue is: I'm currently applying for benefits. If I do get them, I won't get them until March the 5th, and it's only £250. My rent is £200
Basically, I've got to figure out a way to find rent and money for food before the end of feb... Feb is the only month I'm worried about, after then, it's pretty plain sailing.

I do need to find a job though... I'll do it pretty quick I'm sure.

-This was a double post, feel free to delete or leave or whatever-
We're going to keep that post there as a reminder for you to never double post ever again.

Also, it seems that a lot of people I know are worried about money this year. Seems to be a theme amongst all my friends. I used to worry a lot about money (massively) whilst my friends would spend theirs everywhere (holidays, clothes, paying for the party when going out). Money is still a worry for me, but now it's a worry because I'm saving towards a mortgage, rather than worrying about how I'm going to pay rent next month.

It's incredibly depressing to see my friends, my family, my ex and old school peers having money worries when I'm pretty much sorted for the short-medium term.

It wasn't that long ago that I could hardly afford dinner for myself - and that was whilst being employed.

Hipoyion do you have a primark in Eastbourne? I know there's one in brighton. Might not be a very fulfilling job, but apply for anything that comes up there. Has to be done online, but trust me, they struggle to get enough applicants a lot of the time, it's worth going for (especially as you actually have experience, which most applicants don't). By all means treat it as temporary and keep looking for better jobs, but if you're desperate for money, it's an option.

I live in Brighton now, so I could apply for it. I'll apply there but the job seems real horrible though, + I'm super bad at folding clothes x'D Although at least it's not like, working outside, all winter, so I shouldn't complain.
There is a primark in Eastbourne too though.
