Post What's on Your Mind

Tomorrow I'm in Paris for a Khronos meeting about the Vulkan graphics API; if anyone has any questions about Vulkan then write them here and I can get them answered.

...Amy, do you prefer any specific pronouns? What are you going through, when it comes to the correct term? I never want to get something wrong. HiPoyion is gay and I'm bisexual. Peri and I are the only frequent females right now ...

"Princess" and "Amy" both seem pretty unambiguously female to me. Is there something I missed in the "specific pronoun" conversation? [Edit: The "Peri and I are the only frequent females right now" statement is what had me confused.] I guess it doesn't matter who has been helping me with my spriting, but now I am kind of curious about who you folks are in RL. I guess if anyone is interested, I'm a Mormon, politically a staunch conservative/libertarian who is embarrassed that Donald Trump is probably going to be representing the American Right in the general election(I also split from my usual political allies on the subject of Israel--but that's another discussion for another time), working a 9-5 in a government bureaucracy that I'm pretty frustrated with. I live in the suburbs with my wife and 4 kids. My upcoming game probably isn't going to let me retire, but at least the game development lets me tell myself that I'm not just sitting in a job I hate without trying to do anything else. I'm also trying to get into grad school.

Amy, sorry to hear you didn't get the job.

Like seriously, we have the smallest houses in the world or something. Unless you're in a Favella. But they're more likely to have satellite tv.

A coworker of mine got an assignment working with BBCM in Caversham. I heard he was getting a 5-bedroom house there. In America, it seems like only millionaires have 5-bedroom houses. Then I found out that an English 5-bedroom is kind of like an American 3-bedroom, but you take the kids' rooms and cut them both in half.

Basically for an English master bedroom you'd be talking a king size bed with a foot of space (1/3m) at the end, with maybe three foot of space either side (1m). Then you'll get one or two slightly smaller rooms, if you're lucky. Or a smaller room and then a tiny box room that'll barely fit a bed.

Older houses aren't actually that bad. I used to live in a Victorian town-house when I was a student and the rooms were massive. It's only really new-builds or old 2-up-2-down terraced houses that are stupidly small. I live in a new-build and we supposedly have three bedrooms but, like Amy just said, one of them is a tiny box room and that tiny box room is an office. You can see how big it is in this picture; the room ends on the right-hand side of that door frame you can see:

Sated, is that FFVIII's Squall (or his torso anyway) on your desktop? That's actually a lot more workspace than I have. I'll have to show you a picture of my computer when I get home.

Yeah, it is. It's the black-and-white shot from the opening sequence. My other monitor has the black-and-white shot of Quistis. I should probably change it so that it's Rinoa, that would make slightly more sense.

The cutscenes were amazing. The rest of the game was a slog, and I suffered through just to get to the next cutscene. The worst part was drawing magic from all of the enemies. Then you would just horde it for stat increases, and you never cast magic. Someone told me that in remakes of FFVIII, you just draw magic from an enemy, and you automatically get 100 of whatever you just drew. And I played without the strategy guide, so I only upgraded maybe two of my weapons the entire game.

As for talking about whatever's on my mind...

If most of the people here are from the UK, I'm wondering why I'm not noticing more British spellings. Are those words like colour, honour, spectre, sabre, defence, and offence really so rare that I can be on a mostly UK forum and never see them, or have most of you given up and accepted the American versions?

Awesome Bro

@Nate- I don't think the whole game was slog. The flashbacks are more interesting than the main story sometimes. I like the idea of the Timer Wolves and Laguna and his bros doing their thing.

Disc 1 makes FFVIII a bad game fundamentally. If Disc 1's slog did not exist then we can say it's a candidate for being named a good game. Because of Disc 1's slog FFVIII is debatable if it's a good game. It features bad game design, pacing, direction, etc in Disc 1, but the other Discs feel completely different.
