Pixel Art WIPs/Small Things Thread

Hey, I'd like some feedback on this tile I made, it's 3 tiles wide and 3 tiles high (32x32). I'll make an autotile for it, just gotta do some more work on it. I'll finish it tomorrow probably. Just looking for feedback on the current tile:

256x288
The upper one is the autotile itself, the lower one is how it would look on a map, with a lot of them next to each other.
Any feedback is welcome

Well it largely depends on what the rest of everything else will look like ... The colors may either clash or blend. Which is really the biggest concern when it comes to basic grass, besides how repeated the texture looks.

That said, I don't know how ... GRASSY that really looks. It looks more like a fabric pattern to me. The dark "blades" of grass stick out like a sore thumb against the low-contrast backdrop, and at a glance, it just sort of looks like a messy polkadot pattern. If you hadn't have said it was grass, I would have just said "yep that ... is a pattern"

And don't be afraid to use other hues. Grass is more yellow in its lighter tones, and more blue in its darker shades. It's never a flat green.

In fact, in pixel art palettes, you should NEVER just use one flat color and increase or decrease its tonal values. All colors need to blend into other hues (lighter = warmer, darker = cooler). Otherwise, everything just looks flat & bland.

Thanks Venetia for your comment, I'll take it into thought and perhaps redo it.
For now, I'll leave this other one here:

You are probably going to give me the same critique, but just take a look at it :)

Yeah ... Pretty much the same crits apply here. Actually, this pattern looks more like slime to me than grass :x :x :x

If you're new to pixelling, it's a BAD idea to try to start with common repeating patterns (like grass) or making your own templates.

This is a common mistake -- Like kids new to drawing ALWAYS seem to start with drawing anime's.

But the fact of the matter is that repeating patterns and templates are things that even seasoned pros have a really hard time with. You're not going to get it "right" if you keep trying to do the same pattern over and over. You have to work on other stuff, improve your skills, and revisit it later.

I guess this is technically an edit, but I didn't want to create yet another new thread. Anyway I was getting really frustrated trying to draw portraits from scratch. My drawing skills are VERY rusty, my painting skills however are stronger and I basically reinvented the mouth, eyes, and nose of a VXAce generated portrait. Thinking about going with this style for the rest of my game. I don't know if it's different enough to look original, or like just another re-edit.

So it went from this:

to This:

@Daria: The difference between the two is quite noticeable, I am pretty sure you can pull this style out. I really like the edit. :)
@Venetia: I agree with you, grass and other repeating patterns are way to hard to achieve. This may be a kind of weird measure, but he can observe real grass and try to come up with a pattern similar to it.

Mario: Thank you. And yeah after doing a couple more I think I will stick to this style. It's actually really fun.

Here's another example.

I'm going to look at this in a positive light and say I'm happy I got this much done because I hadn't a fuck of an idea of what to do.

Spookeh, I'm not sure what you did with this or if it's a template in which you sprited hair on, but I'm going to assume it's the hair you did... so it looks pillowshaded, and the shine on it doesn't look how it's supposed to be...

Meh, I'm doing this sprite to put in a platformer engine I'm trying to code in game maker...

The face is the section that needs help... the hair is somehow changing the look and shape of the eyes, by probably making the dark outline less dominant when it's surrounded by the dark outline of the hair...

Any help?

thought I'd post some of my monster sprites.
I might have posted the last one before, it's been so long since I visited this topic.

Edit: can I get feedback on this cocoon icon?

Took me about an hour, what do you think? It is my first REAL pixel art...and it is more of a sketch/concept than anything. :)

it's pretty sweet, but why is it aliased? you shouldn't be using transparency in pixel art for edges...
stick to something more like the first image you have in there

@LaDestitute: Those icons/tiles are pretty nice! The pot monster thing should have more contrast, it's difficult to "read," and the rust enemy should have a more bold character/shape, rather than just having pieces of rust floating. That way it doesn't just look a background tile, or an incomplete enemy. Also, more contrast and having a bold outline around the characters would help them stick out more.
