Master of the Wind

Master of the Wind (Complete!)

Oh, we can ask several questions in succession? Awesome.

I have one question for Sir Artbane: How did you come up with all of the brilliant puzzles throughout the series? I haven't seen dungeon design so perfect in a long time.

I also have a question for Mr. Volrath: This question is a bit trivial, but I'll ask anyway. Out of all of the characters that you've created for MotW, which one is your favorite?

Hmm... I'm playing this game again, so that I can get all the bonuses ready for when arc V comes out. Right now, I'm fighting Yaled the Hammer, and Finely is eqipped with Soul Cannons. Now, when I attack Yaled, his damage comes up in green. Does that mean I'm supplying him HP, or is it just there to tell me I'm in the same element as him?

Also, on the Soul Cannons, how did they get in the dungeons? I mean, they're state-of-the-art technology! How did one manage to end up in a pre-gallian castle?

I am glad you think my dungeon design is good. Game design is sort of my thing. It is what I hope to do for the rest of my life so I strive to be good at it. When making my puzzles I try to think of an idea that I am interested in doing that would make sense in the dungeon setting. I try to interconnect them in some way so that it feels like the dungeon is a sum of many parts instead of just broken up rooms. It takes a lot of planning and time but that is what it takes for me to make a good dungeon.

Yaled is aligned with dark magic and the Soul Canon shoots dark energy so you are actually feeding him lead HP. As for the guns mysterious appearances, I'll leave that to your own imagination.

The guns (and all of the treasure chests) are placed there by the hero support leauge (HSL). It is the duty of the support league to ensure that all heroes do not end up spending more money on healing items and ner equipment than they can reasonably amass in a dungeon. The HSL is above even the fairies, who know of thekm but keep their existance TOP SECRET.

MotW's big plot twist is that the Sparrow is the head of the HSL and attempts to fight the heroes by cutting off their supply of freebies.

Well I'll be.

Can I also mention how unfair the fight with Yaled was? I swear, he hit Finely with 4 bursts of Greater Darkness in a row. I nearly cried.

What did he mean by more colourful threats?

He gets a Sir and I only get a Mr? That's bullshit. Nah, only kidding. Yeah, you can ask whatever amount of questions you want. We had threads on our forum called "Ask ArtBane" and "Ask Volrath" designed just for that purpose. Though, unfortunately, the forums will be down for a while yet.

Regarding your question, picking my favorite character is pretty damn hard after spending 2+ years on this project. It's almost like being asked to pick your favorite child. There are some characters which are always fun to write, due to their unique ideas and/or speech patterns: characters like Stoic, Andau, Solik. I also feel like I have to cite Cade and Finley, cause I feel like I know them the best, if that makes sense. Dialogue for those two just flows almost without me having to think. Fun stuff, but really I love all the characters.

Yaled has an awareness that he's a cliche villain, and so he would normally feel obligated to make threats like "I'll tie my shoes with your intestines" or "Your head will be my bowling ball!" But since he's so frustrated after years of being foiled by the fairies, he just didn't have it in him that time.

I have another question. for the both of ya;
Will Yaled make another appearance? Perhaps as another sidequest?

Also, there was a thread on MotW forums creatd by Artbane, titled "What would you like to see?".

I'd quite like to see cooking. Done in the same manner as making armour. THe reason I say this, is because of all the foods that you get in places. Like the fruits, the spices, the fish, etc. I never really bother with them. I figure since that I've gotten that far in the game without needing them, I won't in future. Also, it's because I'm not sure what it is they do. I think you should give a detailed explanation of what exactly it is they do when you read up on them.

But the cooking. There's a lot of scope here. What I mean is, getting all those items and combining them to make something. Something like getting tomatoes, anchovies, meatballs, and some dough, and make a pizza!

There are already explanations in game for the food items. You can find them near the stores where you purchase them. They usually come in the form of a sheet, but some explanations are given by NPCs.

I have a question for both of you: Whats currently in the works for the game? Are you guys working on a MOTW super pack with all four arcs, or are you working on arc 5? It'd replay the whole series if you came out with a super pack.

We've thrown around a couple ideas in that area. Originally, we thought of creating a newer version of the Super Pack, with Arcs I-IV combined. Later on, however, ArtBane suggested we attach Arc V to it as well when that's finished. For those who don't want to play the arcs over again, V would also be released separately. This is subject to change, though. We've gone in several directions with this already.

I give in. The battles are too hard for me. In the Arc I/II Superpack in the mines I'm easily defeated when I'm at LV 9. Then in the lone Arc III - starting off with a new game with provided stats - I can't stand up to anything...

Are the battles meant to be like Dragon Quest, or do I desperately need to level up?

It sounds like you are an appropriate level.

You should be a high enough level to take them. Check your equipment to make sure it is up to date. Especially in the later arcs when you can craft equipment it is a good idea to invest in the newest armor upgrades. Stocking up on potions doesn't hurt either. If you are still having trouble try to approach battles more cautiously by having Shroud heal whenever you get below a certain HP range.

The battles for me were always pretty basic. Use Shroud to heal, while the rest attacks and uses ethers on each other. Anyways, I'm stuck at what to do at the abandoned castle, I've got Auburn's team into the sand garden but not Shroud yet...

Artbane, I have a question (probably asked a thousand times already) but how do you come up with all of these puzzles? They're incredible, how long does it usually take you to make one? and do you plan on making any tutorials?

Well this doesn't answer your questions directly, but he did make a tutorial on dungeon-making. It also has in it some ways to make puzzles, if you look closely enough.
