Master of the Wind (Complete!)

Hey me too! I really need to remember to save more, that's why I actually like savepoints spread out a la FF in distance, it always reminds me to save the game!

Hmm I guess I should say something on topic... but all I can think of it just to say nice one on the story and dungeons Volrath and Artbane, both were very good up until the point I played and I'm sure they would have gotten even better. What is the estimated completion time for Arc III? If you've already written that a million times just ignore that question!

The really sad part of that is that you can walk into the little shack by the lake and use the fairy to save right before that battle. Doesn't even matter if you hadn't saved in the monastery up until then. Here's hoping the cutscenes are good enough to watch twice.

Also, Calibre: The average time for Arc III is about 5-6 hours.

In all three arcs I logged over 11 hours :D

Mostly because I kept searching all of the places I had already been. It payed off a few times (the lancers come to mind).

well, Anaryu tried to help me (thanks again, btw), but to no avail. i can't get past the tower with the text-input puzzles. the game simply won't let me type in any text. i am totally bummed right now 'cause i've been looking forward to ArcIII forever. *cry*

Great job, guys. Downloaded it this morning and just started playing tonight. Made my way to the forest and just finished the incredible badass shooting minigame with the guys who try to push the log. Very, very clever using the mouse like that. It gives me some ideas for a project of mine, but I was going to talk to you about that anyway eventually, Artbane.

I'm loving it, especially the cutscenes that I have seen so far and I am looking forward to getting deeper into it. From what I know of the series so far, I'm only in the beginning of this dungeon, and I'm looking forward to what awaits.

From what I can tell afro there is nothing wrong with your save file. Just head to the next room and start the switch puzzle by clicking on the first switch and the tile across from the other switch. If you get stuck in the game please just ask for guidance. I don't have the time to play through people's save files unless it's to fix a game stopping bug.

Well, I finally finished Arc III; definitely the best yet!

Ever since after Outlaw City was complete, when I was first introduced to Master of the Wind, it's been the center inspiration for improving my own skills; I've carefully watched and learned from the dungeons designs and the best dialog I've seen in any RMXP game (and frankly most commercial games!) to date.

MotW has a couple minor issues; the mapping is still a bit basic, mostly in towns, and sometimes the sprites can't convey the deeper meanings of what's going on in a scene...

BUT!

It's still easy the single best RMXP game around. The puzzles are top notch; they're always varied and they bring the maps to life, as ArtBane put it: "Design the map around the idea, not the idea around the map."

With complex event interaction, it's easy the best use of the Event system I've ever seen. Mix in that the dungeons themselves are NEVER a disappointment; they're as varied as the puzzles themselves, with different themes and with puzzle styles that never feel out of place, and you've got a smack-down combination.

I can still remember how impressed I was that the very FIRST dungeon in Master of the Wind easily trumped any other dungeon I'd played or attempted.

You will get as much from the MotW dungeons as you're willing to put into them.

Next comes story. With memorable characters that have their own issues and quirks, Master of the Wind has easily the most smooth flowing dialog of nearly any GAME I've ever played. The story itself is entertaining, and although it gets sidetracked at times, it's kept me waiting for the next installment without fail since I started Arc I.

Currently I think anyone developing games for RMXP should play this. You will, if you pay attention, learn so much about how to improve your own work it's not even funny. I say this from experience.

I'd also just like to mention; to those of you so concentrated on scripted systems, that MotW relies only on the most basic of scripts, using only a handful to create an atmosphere. Yes, the best RMXP game around doesn't have a ton of super custom scripts, it just has amazing gameplay and story. That's something to take to heart I think.

Wow, that's very flattering. Even though the dialog comes off as fairly colloquial and off the cuff, it does generally take a lot of careful thought and I'm glad people enjoy it...certainly enough to compare to commercial games, though MotW has the advantage of not being sloppily translated into English from another language that some games with otherwise great stories (FFT as a good example) don't have.

I heartily agree with your comment about the limitations of the sprites. We've managed to get a couple of very effective edits, but not for everything. Auburn's confrontation with Goma, for example, may be the most grim moment in the game thus far in terms of subject matter, and I did have nagging thoughts about if I could really pull it off.

I would also be interested to know what more people think about the detours the story takes, as I assure you they're quite intentional. I often feel the need when conceiving the stories for these arcs that every now and then our heroes should take a break from the complex investigative effort against Kovak/The Hand and do some more old-fashioned vigilante heroism. Though I have heard from a couple people that the gradual pacing regarding the main storyline has proven a little frustrating, only because people are sick of the build up and want to see an epic plot twist. Those are coming, but my writing in general is never really in a hurry.

I have mapped all the towns in the game thus far, so it's no surprise to me that they're the weakest ones. However, I thought I had done a much better job with Boreal than with previous ones, perhaps I still have a way to go. ArtBane's first town will show up early in Arc IV and I think it looks great, despite how easily satisfied I am in this regard. Anyway, thanks for the kind words and I'm glad to hear the project has been influential. Anything that makes for more Cast Aside is good in my book.

Heya! Was just playing through again to refresh myself for the third arc, and finish the second I never quite got around to completing, and found me a typo on the fellow that fell down the hole in the first arc.

I think you meant "On my way out of town".

Still love it, and I'll be back to comment on the third arc once I'm finished. ^^

In the middle of Arc3 and loving it.

Favorite thing so far: The conversation between Cade/Bones/Finley at Zala's house while Zala does her cooking. Sometimes it's really boring seeing a bunch of text fly by on the screen while the characters just sit there and stare into each other's eyes. But having Zala do cooking in the background, although not relevant to the dialogue, added a really nice touch of reality to the game.

I knew when I was working on that scene I needed to do something to spice it up. Since Zala didn't have any dialog I thought it would be nifty to have her in the background preparing dinner to add a bit of activity to an overall static scene. It was a lot of extra effort than just typing the dialog in but as you said I think it adds a lot. It is nice when people notice the little things.

We also now have RRRB reviews! Thanks Flash for your review of arc I and arc II.

I already finished arc III and satisfied, i like it very much especially in story and puzzle.
I like the ending when he back, (he is my favorite character) the secret ending also good.
But when game end i was little dissapointed because i must be patient to wait until arc IV came out :P

Finally found time to play this game :)

So within two days, I started from the beginning with the Super Pack until I completed Arc 3 (took me 14 hours).

This game is unbelievably good. I can't even describe how much I'm in love with this game... it's just... great!

And there's even more more mini-games! More dungeons! More crafting! More Finley! And... more Toutens!

While the first two Arcs I thought the story was just so-so, the story really starts to unveil and be much more interesting. (I'm even surprised how interesting the monastery part was, I actually remembered enough of the history to score 8/10 out of that quiz).

For anyone else reading this... download it! Do it now!

And with that, I have one question:
I found only one part of the secret ending to craft (The Film you get with Yeti-Kong... which was a fun minigame).

Where's the other one?

Wait... don't tell me... was it with the Angry Lodites in the beginning of the game? When are you able to come back when they calmed down if that's the case?

Alright. Since you asked I won't tell you that the projector is across the uncrossable bridge you had to come back to after the Lodites calmed down.

Well. After running out of puzzle ideas for my new project I decided to look for inspiration elsewhere, and finally started Arc3.
Anyhow. I feel really dumb all things considering, but...

When shooting the creatures pushing the floating log, I can't get on it. I keep shotting them, the log rolls back and more appear. Then I shoot the more that appear. Repeat, repeat, and repeat. I tried getting on the log when it stopped I just can't seem to get on. I must have spent 10 minutes shooting these things.
Any help would be great, even though I know I'll feel dumb when I get the answer.)
