You don't need to for continuity, but it might help. A few of the characters have links to previous games, but stand-alone it's quite good.

I'll vouch for Suiko V as well. Some didn't care for it much but I loved it.

However...you should DEFINITELY play Suiko I and II. They are two of the best RPGs made for the PS1. If you can find them for less than $200 on eBay, that is.

Or, well...there are other ways that we're not really supposed to talk about...

Well I'm mixed about the xenosaga series.  I think its an example where bad voice acting can spoil decent writing and poor gameplay makes you turn off the console.  Xenosaga III atoned for the god awful II, but it still kept the shitty voice actors that only improved slightly since the first installment.  They would've been better off saving their money by not hiring them at all and just subbed it.  Also tweaking the gameplay a bit because the balancing was horrendous at times.  All said the tale itself was decent and well rounded thematically, but the execution should've been better.

Shin Megami is a lot of fun.  As was Suikoden III.

Ten bucks says System Shock. Or SS2. (Which are, by the way, amazing games.)

I did think system shock. It's a pity that bioshock never came out on PS2, though I realize the hardware probably couldn't keep up with the techno the game has. I can't honestly think of many unknown, underrated rpgs apart from magna carta: tears of blood, but someone took that already, so...

Also I didn't really get into the first two Persona games but imo Persona 3 is a really good buy.

Yup Yup, I agree. Imo II was the best one but III is almost just as good. Def. both worth the money.

I have 2, but I played 3 before 2 so 2 is really weird to me and I can't really get into it.

Persona 2: Eternal Punishment is a lot easier to get into once you've played Innocent Sin, the first half. A hacker called Gemini is working on a translation patch for it so you may want to wait on that.

Legend of Legaia was ok, it was very FFVII-esque in its graphics. Def. a great rpg to fuck around with, but STAY AWAY FROM LEGAIA 2.

Know it? I loved this game. I actually have it (through means we don't speak of =x) and would recommend it to anyone who likes RPG's.

EDIT: Yes, stay away from Legaia 2 it is a disgrace to what they created with Legaia 1, imo.

Ha ha I will heed your words of doom.  From what I recall from that demo, that game kicked ass.  How could they shit something good like that up?



EDIT:  Interestingly, I just found out that Legends of Legaia was "developed by Contrail, an internal development team headed by Wild Arms producer, Takahiro Kaneko".

Yeah and Wild Arms 2 for playstion one was my favorite of them all because the guy could transform, and that's also the only one I got far in =x. (and also because I think that new "Hexagon Battle System" is shit and Wild Arms 3 is surfing in the same toilet)

Wow, relax man. I'm welcome to hate Valkyrie Profile 2 if I want to. A lot of people did. It didn't do NEARLY enough justice to the original as it could have. The story was slow as hell, the characters beyond the three valkyries were boring, and Lezard was annoying as hell. The only worthwhile thing about it was the graphics, but even then, it was downplayed by a battle system that's the bastard child of VP:Lenneth and Star Ocean 3 (P.S. This is a bad thing).


Also, if you thought I was bashing the original, you thought wrong. I love that game.  :thumb:

yikes.  I respect your opinion, antifarea, but to tell you the truth, I think you're blowing this out of proportion juuuuust a weee bit.

so far in this post, dopples has had some great comments, and I respect all of them.  He's more then welcome to call Valkyrie Profile a turd sandwich if he feels like. 

In the end, if I'm the one that simply accepts his criticism without looking further into it myself, then in reality I'd be the ignorant one. 

I'll gladly take any opinion into consideration when looking into whether I'm going to buy a product or not, whether it's overly detailed or not.
