Greatest unknown PS2 RPGs?

Suikoden V was not that shitty. IV was, i hated it, but i could still like V.

Also, you should try and play Baldur's Gate series. They're a good RPG experience, although a lot different than most on the PS2

If you're gonna play Baldur's Gate, skip to BG2 and play the PC version. The console ports of infinity engine games are generally horrible.
From what I played of the console version of BG2 I enjoyed it, I only wish I got a chance to finish it.

For what it's worth, I liked Phantom Brave. More than La Pucelle, anyway. The rest of the Makai series (Disgaea 2, Makai Kingdom, Soul Nomad) were extremely disappointing though.

Suikoden III would've crashed and burned with IV and V if it hadn't been so close to the first two's time line. Personally, the only draw III really had was that- the story had the most characters from the original two in all three of the 3D Suikodens. IV just couldn't do that being set over a hundred years before (that's still no excuse- the story was shit). V was still a little closer, but still lacked that familiarity. I was really hoping some of the stars would be developed some more, but they instead just slapped on more and more people.

My recommendations... Hmm, tough one. Looking back, I was rather disappointed by the PS2's selection. I just couldn't find as many good titles as I did back on the PS1. But from the back of my head, you should try Devil Summoner: Kuzunoha Raidou and Mana Khemia. Atlus/NIS games always seem to be under the radar.

V wasnt that bad youre right, but it was still pretty meh. IV was just terrible by all means. I think III would have done well even if the time eras werent so close; it did a good job with storytelling on its own, perhaps thats why I loved it so much (the battles werent that amazing, but the storyline was grand.)

I never played the first two Suikoden games (at least, not before I played III) and I though III was great and IV was crap, regardless of any timeline considerations! :D

I recommend Suikoden III, and Radiata Stories, as for games that sorta flew under the radar. Persona III was good, too, but that series seems to be suddenly becoming more mainstream in its popularity.

Radiata and Persona three are the shit/offtopic

I 'm going to have to go with EverGrace I found the game to be really fun and quite addicting, now a days I think you can find it for around 5-6 USD. I recommend it it's well worth the money.

Couple questions:

1)  Isn't Suikoden that series where you can have 100+ characters and transfer them from game to game?  Doesn't that get overwhelming at times?

2) What's the general verdict on "Magna Carta"?  I had it in my hand, but decided against it...  I see Marcus liked it, just curious about the general consensus.

3)  I was going to look into Shadow Hearts, but I'm confused...  Is Koudelka the first game in the Shadow Hearts series, or is it a different game entirely?

By the way, I picked up "Disgaea" (it seemed that there was a lot of agreement over this game) and I'm liking it so far... at least until I get bored with the strategy battle system.

(P.S.  I am entirely aware that I can Google the answer to these questions, but I'm enjoying the discussion... keep it up!)

Its a shame there are so many under rated games that dont get any attention.

Holy shit EVERGRACE. Such a great game that was also snubbed. I highly recommend it, such a fun action/RPG.

I wish those games would still be around, I can't find Evergrace or EOE anywhere now.

I'm just hitting every video game store discount/used PS2 bin I can find.  I'm loving it.

Koudelka is the prequel to Shadow Hearts, but you can play SH without knowing what happens in Koudelka, as the important parts are explained in game.

Koudelka was OK for its time, but its aged horribly.

Magna Carta is a pretty awful game overall, but I've known some people who liked it a lot. You might want to read some reviews and see if its the sort of thing you'd like.

That seems to be the general consensus.  What didn't you like about it?

That seems to be the general consensus.  What didn't you like about it?

-The battle system had some good ideas, but in execution it's just clunky and tedious.
-The characters are about as easy to relate to as bricks.
-Escape is pretty much not an option as it works very seldomly.
-The camera is god-awful.
-Terrible voice acting.
-Repetitive and monotonous.

On the plus side, it had a passable story and the graphics were absolutely gorgeous for the time, but that's just about it.

You guys are forgetting Valkyrie Profile 2... even though most of you might played it, I was surprised a lot of people who came to my store (back in the old eb/gamestop working days) never heard of it. I liked more part 1, but part two wasn't bad either as it had a total new different character upgrade system, and other new feats.

Also another great game that people rarely know is SMT: Devil Summoner (raidou vs the souless army)...
