Don't expect anything ground breaking plot wise though.
The main reason I stopped playing them.

(I've played the Super Famicom one, and liked it)

Now, it's old, came out in 2001, and to be honest, the battle system is a bit boring. But, but, the story is quite funny. I haven't laughed so much at an RPG since I don't really remember. It would be an interesting try, if you can get over the battle system being a bit boring at times.
In addition, Shadow Hearts may be teetering on the line of being popular or not, but you should try that as well. It's hard to find the first game (at least for me) but you can play the second one without needing to play first game (it helps though). Even though people don't like the third one, it's still quite good as well. It doesn't follow the first two, so it stands on its own. Also, Shadow Hearts has always had an interesting battle system. Give them a try if you haven't.

Also, you should try and play Baldur's Gate series. They're a good RPG experience, although a lot different than most on the PS2

If you're gonna play Baldur's Gate, skip to BG2 and play the PC version. The console ports of infinity engine games are generally horrible.
