- A tragic, predictable, inevitable ending
- Brief, unpredictable and lethal fight scenes where well-developed characters actually die (You go "oh my god!!!" when your favorite character bites the dust because of some small error in their part/ they were unlucky
- Great character design where more than half the characters look butt-ugly (it's harder to draw ugly characters than pretty ones)
- Amazing use of stylistic devices, dramatic irony etc.
- Cool dialogue
- Smart characters that don't go "YAA I KILL U" even though they see their sister get murdered right in front of their eyes etc. they mentally torture their enemies, etc. the characters do stuff you don't normally see in animation.
- Really efficient story-development

if none of that gets your attention then maybe this will: Romeo and Juliet with ninjas.

Definitely too much shonen in this thread.

Here and There, Now and Then.

This is probably the most "western" of the anime's I've seen which is good because I generally hate anime. It's dark, well paced, has excellent character development (it's also one of the few stories that successfully pulls off the "insane" villain), and it's not insanely goofy.

I really liked how the entire show felt dirty. Even during the more "revealing" scenes where you think there's going to be some fan service end up being a rape scene and you feel awful for what's going onscreen. The show doesn't pull any punches with it's anti-war message right down to visually killing off kids on screen which is generally a no-no even in anime. While it is an anti-war story, there's also a pro-war message floating around it that basically boils down to "War only leads to killing but killing is necessary to live. Damned if you do, damned if you don't."

Yea, anyone who hasn't seen it should see it. It leaves most anime's in the dust.

omg Now and then, here and there!

I agree I loved that too.

It was also really really good, tragedies everywhere, no happy endings for anyone. I tend to like those types ':|

it's almost cleansing, watching an episode of that series, it's just pure heartache and sorrow XD

To be honest I wanted to adapt the concept into a game, the opening lines are just so nice...

Because ten billion years' time is so fragile, so ephemeral... it arouses such a bittersweet, almost heartbreaking fondness.

GG.

Oh there's also Kite (whichever version is uncut), another tragedy type anime. highly recommended.

It's labelled as hentai though, but don't let that offset anyone old enough to watch it -_- it's very good. Fight scenes are excellent. I wouldn't have watched the cut version without the sex scenes as it takes away from the dirtiness of the film.

<--Elfen Lied all the way... Guess where my avatar's from?

Personally I don't really see why shows like Inuyasha are so popular; it just goes on and on predictably almost like a soap opera. Well no offenses, just difference in tastes I guess.

Yes, the vast majority of shonens are bad. But Elfen Lied, well... *nyu* *Splotch* *nyu* *splotch* didn't convince me either. Not deep enough. And this has nothing to do with the dark atmosphere, I love cynicism (Gunslinger girl FTW !), and loved Higurashi.

The most memorable part of Elfen Lied for me was its ending, but indeed, the Nyu got old very fast. Higurashi and Gunslinger Girl indeed were also some great watches, and I'm interested to see the sequels of both series.

My favorite part of Elfen Lied with Nyu is when she learns to say Yes and says it when the professor asks if anyone knows the answer lol. Personally though, not enough gore.

My favorites, the ones everyone is going to hate me over, has got to be DBZ and Digimon's first and second season.

Yay Digimon 01 and 02!!! :D (How I wish that someday they release Dvds T.T)

Anyway, I also love Fullmetal Alchemist, Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi, Scrapped Princess and Eureka 7. (hmm...3 of those are animated by BONES n.n) I enjoyed Higurashi and Gunslinger Girls as well, but they aren't my favourites.
