Ethereal Dreams

Racheal's been working on the script for the battles a lot lately. Here's a look at a few new things.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v45/Makio_Kuta/Battle1.png[/img]
Enemy health is displayed as a bar, with no numbers. And their states are displayed next to their HP.
The icon select for attack, defend, skills, and item is also seen here. And, although it's not displayed i this shot, player states are also shown as icons below their SP.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v45/Makio_Kuta/Battle2.png[/img]
In this shot you can see the new skill select. The item select looks much the same.
It's truly unnoticeable in these shots, but weapons in the hands of the characters battlers change when you change their equipment. n.n

http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/2865/killerplantib8.png[/img]
Here's a shot from the third dungeon. Mostly, this is to show off the killer plant sprite. Ain't he cute? Don't get too close. n.n Yeah, this was in the screenshot thread before, but never in our thread.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v45/Makio_Kuta/Spray.png[/img]
Just a little sprite animation!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v45/Makio_Kuta/Nova.png[/img]
A shot from the next town showing off the caravan tiles on the set. It's nighttime.

Anyway, 2.0 is still plugging away at those resources. Not too much more to go. Some music, some sprites, some art. lol Just a little bit in every category. But it's running smoothly.

Only a month to go. How nerve racking. *shudders* I wish I could share some truly different shots. But....we don't want to spoil a couple of things. lol

I don't think I've officially said anything here yet, but this game's looks and feels wonderful. As an artist I really like artwork esp. when other artists are able to take a style (anime in this case) and add something that ends up making a style that is unique and therefore their own.

I also the <3 the coloring. ^^ I had Racheal color a piece of lineart some time ago, and the style of shading is awesome. If ever someone wants to give me some pointers once this game is completed, they'd have a grateful pupil!

Wow thanks! (although I've never said it either, I enjoy looking at your art thread a lot. n.n )
Being the artist, it's nice to get a compliment from another artist. Thanks again. (I'm sure Racheal will be happy to hear her colouring is loved as well lol n.n )

Oh and I forgot the most important update of all!!! Bad me! This is proof that listening to the Phoenix Wright soundtracks while looking at this sprite animation is BAD for my brain.

Yes, I know I'm weird. *skittles off*

*Comes out of his spriting hideaway* O.o.... *looks at DS* man... â•¥.â•¥....

(New screenies looks great. Can't wait for the next demo. Also, I have some stuff I wanted you to look through, but I'll Pm you about it eventually Maks)

@kieara: I like to think I've come a long ways from my days of abusing burn and dodge ^^; Though all the same, there's always room for improvement. Thanks for the compliment ^^ You've got a very nice distinct style yourself that I've always enjoyed.

Oh, and speaking of that piece I did for you, did anyone ever do the sister piece? I was always tempted, but slave driver Maki has been running me so ragged... (j/k ;)) If no one ever did, I might be tempted to do so after we get 2.0 out next month. If you're interested of course.

@JD: Just as you're awaiting our demo, we're awaiting yours. ^^

(Feel free to PM me anytime J.D. And are you eying your DS as a fellow Phoenix Wright fan? ....is it September 4th yet?!!)

And just to make this a little less spammy. Have a couple more screen shots I meant to post but forgot to.

A bunny!
http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/7375/bunnyow1.png[/IMG]

And the first flashback image has been completed in colour. n.n No more of that sketchy pencil art in the middle of the game.

awesome. i dont think i've posted here or on creation asylum but i definately have kept track of it ^_^
The last screen is great with the gaurd :)

I would just like to say this game was really fun! It kept me interested in it. . I was sad when the demo ended. . but heres my review this is my first review and it is not intended to offend. =) just pointing out somethings.

*This is a demo to play, try it out! Ethereal Dreams!*

**Warning a lot of text below. .**
Ethereal Dreams
Pros, Cons, and Suggestions!

Opening:
Starting Menu too bright compare to the selection button.
(Nice Artwork though on it just needs to tone down the accual button.)

1. The Facesets look great with the message window and also looks good compared to the pixel characters they represent.

2. Minor problems with wording, spelling, and sentence forming.
(**Celine says at the bar scene "There must have been a lot if it takes.
. ." there should be a comma after a lot. **The spelling "Lotsh" is wrong
of course but from a creative stand point. I can see how it may work. It
does sound like maybe an accent type notion. **Morgan says "dear" at the
end of a sentence it shouldnt be capatilized. **Darin calls the two women
"charming" I am not sure about this but my grandmother always told me. Men
were charming and women are beautiful. **Morgan says "that thats" should
put a comma there as well. There a few more but just review closer and you
will see them. .)

3. The stairs to the bed room (of the inn) and the platform it leads too. Are they supposed to float? Maybe make four poles on the corners, or maybe just have some type of hardware holding it up,

4. Menu is well organized and gets the job done!

5. Icons are terrific but some dont match too well.

6. Tileset is remarkable.

7. The dragon handling kinda gives away, a thing about the character. I dont know if this information is intended right off hand?

8. The animated grass adds a nice feel.

9. Right outside the front of the bar. The wine cellar, seems to accually enter the bar more then a celler. The door is throwing it off, because that should lead you in between the two entrances to the bar.

10. All graphics seem to hold well with each other and are a treat to the eye. (Tileset, Character Art, Character Sprites, Autotiles ect.)

11. Interaction with some characters can be improved like lets take "man". He says "To the west of here is the Fungal Forest. But I wouldn't go there if I were you."
This is a better approach since a random "man" would just randomly give you information. However, you can do this. Here are two examples of basic interaction.

Man: "Hello, there good day! Oh, Fungal Forest? Its to the west, Beware it is quite dangerous."

or

Man: "Oh, what? You want a big hello? After returning from the west, from Fungal Forest. . . I don't believe you would be all that happy either, now would you?"

Something like that because even though the character is not speaking, the npc is letting out information concerning his experiences with the region.

12. Im not a big fan of being able to walk into random homes, but I do in cases where the game allows you too. I dont want to miss out on anything. Well great job on the entrance way to the kitchen very unique sense of breaking away from the original same door frame. That made up for
the ability to walk into random homes.

13. Maybe add some "animated glow" to the lights. Would be a nice addition to the tileset.

14. If the flowers can not be smashed when you walk on them. I would just make then non passive. (This is not really a big deal, just made me sad. I wanted to smash them. Accually its just a part of the realism to it.)

15. Merchant counters look some what odd to me. Don't know what it is. . .

16. Morgan doesn't mention anything about last night? Thought she would say something more like "I still cant believe you had a daughter. .".

17. The "dock" kinda wouldnt work like that. Maybe add something to support it. As it seems to be close to the water, maybe some barrels to keep it a float. Just something. .

18. The water, even though one motion, works great.

19. The water is great, but for the water in the town, wouldnt have the same depth as the ocean so maybe change the look of it to a darker and more calm version.

20. Fish animation is awesome. Great appearance and gives a awesome feel to the water.

21. Great tutorial! When entering the forest.

22. The battlers and the backdrops are perfect!

23. The Sky behind the trees, it look stange. One minute it looks fine next it bugs me . . . (Not when you find the mushroom.)

24. Forest is pleasing, I usually hate them but it was fun. Nice placement with items too!

25. Slime animation worked perfectly!

26. I love the battles very intense and fun.

27.
Music portion is propertly set!

28. World map . . . great work indeed.

Thankies ^^; I agree too, I'm always trying to improve my style or shading, or try to see if I can go to another level with my drawings and shadings. Shading is just a little bit harder for me to get sometimes, even though I study real life objects. Tis why I love your style so much, it has such personality and I can instantly recognize your shading style anywhere.

Wah?!*tries not to squeal* Why yes, yes; if you have time to do the sister one, It'd be absolutely lovely.

EDIT. Holy smokes! I LOVE the newest artwork! So much emotions conveyed in one little pic that tells a heck of a story.

@darksora: It's always nice to hear that people are keeping track of this game ^^ I am rather proud of how that screen turned out (Maki said to keep it simple... it was Darin and his dragon...you think I listened? ^^; )

@kieara: I used to watch anime and mostly just stare at the shading instead of really paying attention XD Though really, I'm not much of a technical shader, I just kinda go with it ;)
I wouldn't have time until I'm done with the 2.0 stuff sometime mid-to-late August, but I'll be sure to work on it then ^^

@kidd: I'm glad you had fun and were interested :) I hope you enjoy 2.0 as well when we release it next month.

and as far as your review.. I reply with many words myself ^^
0. We've actually redone the title screen, because the old one really didn't fit the style of the game. I actually posted it many pages back *digs it up*
Racheal;207639 said:
First, finally got the new title screen in order. Here's a look:
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n288 ... ts/sc6.png[/IMG]
It's animated to scroll up from the bottom and then fade in the logo and options.
2. Going off memory here, and I'll only address some of them (since Makio is the writer, not myself) but... the "Lotsh" is supposed to be a bit of a slur (since Darin is drunk). The way Morgan is using "Dear" is more like a pronoun, and thus the capitalization. And maybe it's a personal thing, but I find no issue calling ladies "charming"

3. You know, those have always bugged me, but I could never quite put my finger on why. Thanks

5. A vast majority of the icons are changing for 2.0 (unless you mean the talent icons), though I am curious as to which you refer to

7. The fact that Darin is a Dragon Rider and thus would Ride (Handle) a Dragon is in no way a secret. Of course...I've had a lot of people compare his ears to a fish... when they're supposed to be Dragon ears ^^;

9. That thought had never crossed my mind, but now that'd you said that, I'll have to poke Maki about getting some sort of basement entrance or something.

11. NPCs didn't quite get the attention they deserved in 1.0/1.1, but that's something we've been working on fixing in 2.0 (though not necessarily the man you referred to)

12. Walking into houses has always just been a RPG thing. I know personally, I'd be annoyed if all the doors were locked ^^;

16. We have added an extra scene (well...not really "scene" can't find a better word) with Morgan in 2.0 where she mentioned something along those lines.

23. Yeah, we fought with that panorama a bit, and decided not to worry about it for now.

24. Glad that someone enjoyed the forest ^^; It's gotten a few mixed reviews.

That's not all the points, but all I had a reply for currently

I know I'm late for the party, but this game is really awesome. I had a blast playing through the demo. Everything was fun, pretty and balanced. It's heartening to see a project with this level of customized visuals get this far...and such a distinctive style too!

I really appreciate the effort you've put into the party dynamics, as well. I love that the three main characters so far are a drunken putz, the drunken putz'z adopted daughter, and a centaur as the voice of reason. The overall light-hearted nature of this thing is addictive. Shame it ended so soon.

Okay, I'll stop gushing now. Us mods must maintain an air of professionalism, after all.

How does one properly reply to a gushing mod? *blushes* Many thanks! Hearing that from someone with a game as popular as yours...makes me smile from ear to ear!

I shall also tack on my many words in reply to kidd6686
2. Lotsh is indeed spelled that way to show that Darin is slurring his words because he's drunk. I'll address the other grammar things, but like Racheal, a charming lady, doesn't seem to be that strange a statement to me.
3. I'll look into this too. I think I know to what you're referring too though. n.n
7. The fact that Darin is a DragonRider is in no way a secret. It's his class. It's stated on every character page too. n.n
9. Hmmm....I'll play with that door a bit. Been a while since I played with Geja's look. n.n
11. All the NPCs were kinda thrown in to be there for this demo. I'll look into that man, but I will also say that what Racheal says is true. NPC interaction will be a bit more noticeable in 2.0.
13. I've always wanted to, just never got around to it. lol And then forgot. I'll remember now thanks! XD
17. Whaha I've never noticed how wrong that dock is XD I'll give it something to stand on for sure.
19. Hmmm...more shallow...Interesting. I'll play.
Thanks very much for the comments!! *loves long comments* n.n

Thanks again to everyone! It pleases me so much to see this game being well received. Considering how much of my free time it consumes.

Heya, I thought I would check back in on this project. I have to say that those new screenshots look incredibly sexeh! I was wondering what the big circular thing in the top-left corner of the second battle screen was, though...
I still can't wait for another demo (Or better yet, THE FINISHED GAME!!!! MWAHAHAHA!!!)* I actually replayed the old one through last night, just to remember how awesome this project is.

Oh, and that cut-scene rocks... it actually just gave me an idea. Wouldn't it be awesome if you added a way to look at any cut-scene you've seen so far in the game? Kinda like Psychonauts?
I don't know. I thought it would be cool. :p

Anyways, good luck continuing this!

*Sorry about that

@Reives: Thanks as always. XD
@Ratty: Play it play it! *duck taped and thrown in a corner in hopes she'll be quiet* Mphh mitt!! And yeah...I draw pointy chins. I love 'em. n.n'
@BusterSword777: According to Racheal, your suggestion of a scene viewer has got her brain rolling. n.n I like the idea too. Thanks again!
* and never fear, I'm always excited thinking about the finished product too, but....it's a while away from that. lol

Anyway, on kid-I'm too lazy to look up the numbers- suggestion (sorry buddy....n.n') I fixed the dock. Since yeah, it was undeniably flat and messed up. lol

@Makio-Kuta

It looks better =) and I know it will be a great game at the end! I made a banner too for myself. Hopefully I don't get in trouble for doing so :O but if you want me to take it off I will. Good luck with development I will wait on the new edition of the demo!
