I've worked out how to do collision detecting without getting stuck to walls (yay), so now player movement is really smooth as well as animated from a charset much like RMXP. It's pixel movement, but I'm using a variable timer like dealie to work out when the frame should change so it doesn't look silly if you keep starting and stopping. I'm having trouble relaying this across the server ~ so at the moment other players move without their sprite changing. I'll work on that. I also don't know the syntax for checking arrow keys so for now it's WASD which messes up with the chat. -.-

Auto-joining chat now works, but for some reason only for irc.j3di.org (it won't work for slacked and I have no idea why; it was earlier!!!!!)

Erm... that's about it for this morning.

The connect button has been removed from the HUD as it's no longer needed. It now automatically logs you into the chat network using the user of whatever nick you logged in with, and the ident VENGEANCE.
 
pretty sick. i'd try and do something with the 39dll, but for whatever reason, i can't host a server >.> ah well, i'm stupid with netwroking anyway, and i look forward to this. :thumb:
 
I've upped the HUD's opacity from 50% to 80% to make the text easier to read.

Yeyinde helped me get the font working better, so now it's fixed width and size 10 instead of the default shite.

On the right you'll see some progress on a userlist - not actually scripted the userlist yet but showing/hiding the side window works.

Ignore the grey blocks - though they do show how passabilities are working at the moment :wink: .


The side menu will ONLY SHOW at certain times when you want it to, it's not designed to be there all the while (unless you want it to be). I want the game screen to be very clutter-free, hence the tiny HUD.

I know this could be an if/maybe/never answer, but you know the userlist, would it be possible, that when you click the name of one of the users, or even right click, it comes up with a list of options, like to whisper them or something, or is that out of the question ?

And will the HP/MP (I assume ?) be staying below, I agree it keeps the screen clutter free, but it seems a little out of place, considering almost every RPG I've played (With HP bars) are at the top left of the screen, maybe it's just me on this one.
 
Yeah that could be done. I dunno what options would be useful to anyone other than mods though.

As for the HP bar positioning - I could just make it editable. Like you can choose between top or bottom.

Ah yeah that'd be pretty cool...

For the list thing, I guess you could just have whisper and ignore or something for starters, add more as they come along.

(Mac keyboard has no tilde key thats gay)

I dunno how or what the battle system is going to be like yet; I'm open to ideas.

If you want a big playerbase, copy WoWs battlesystem, lol... it's pretty much an ABS... (Zelda)

I'm using Game Maker this time around.

At the moment the game is nothing more than a glorified IRC client (but that's not necessarily a bad thing!), until I get that all working well. I might release the game once the IRC part is done; all you'd be able to do is walk around and chat to people but that's still cool!

Battle system

I've been having more thoughts and... what is everyone's thoughts on how a "Zelda" battle system would work in an MMORPG? I mean an exactly Zelda battle system (near enough). You have a sword, or a bow; you attack on the map by pressing keys, etc, rather simple. Potential for skills on top and items, but essentially all you have stats-wise is a HP bar...

I guess you have to play the Zelda games to know properly what I'm talking about.


@jbrist: I don't know enough about WoW to even know what the battle system even looks like...

Hmm, actually, trying to simulate a WoW Battlesystem without a 3D environment could be hard, since there's alot of moving involved that just wouldn't suit this sort of game, but if you'd like to know anyways;

It's pretty much like Runescapes battlesystem, except you have more freedom while fighting, you're able to actually move and run around and jump etc, while fighting, so for example;

You're fighting a wolf, it can only attack by clawing and biting you, which needs be close ranged, so while fighting you can, for example, jump over it as you attack, you can run around it repeatedly while attacking, or you can just move out of its melee range and shoot it with mage/range (Obviously it'll follow you, so you'll have to get far enough away that you can hit it before it reaches you)

You could watch some WoW Duelling videos on YouTube or something to get a feel for what I mean, although

I think a sort of Zelda ABS would fit the game pretty well to be honest, I'd vote for that.
 
I could do 3D (not in the 3D look scence, but in the XYZ sence). I.e. you jump, taking you into a higher layer than the enemy - you can attack them they can't attack you... if that makes sense.

You could actually do that ? Cause that'd make it a really unique game, can't say I've seen/heard of one that's 2D, yet uses an XYZ axis model o.O

If it's something you think is worth doing, I say go for it, but if it'd take too much time, trouble, and patience, then maybe it's better left out.
 
Hmm.

If this game works out alright I might invest in a box, and setup/run my own IRC network off it (to take the load off slacked.org). That way I'd be able to run the game server off it too (if I made one that didn't use GM) and shit, and well... idk, it might be worthwhile.

I don't know anything about running an IRC network though -.-
 
I might have more when I get home tonight. At the moment, as I say, it's really just a pretty-looking IRC client :p.

I need to have a look at the IRC again and see if I can get it working; it managed to break itself :box:
