How did we get here? A backstory to Vengeance
THE MAGE WARS
Waaaaaa cliche
Magic as it exists today was a mistake, there is no other word for it. As is the very presence of the Known Gods today.
Between the neutral plane that is Incendi, and the Daemonic Plane, there lies a rift between worlds. It is this phenomenon that gave the old ones magic so long ago. Five hundred and seventy three years ago precisely, the greatest mages have been able to work out. Through the rift, a mighty Daemon attempted to travel. It was stopped, by an impassible barrier between worlds. But this barrier was weak, and the Daemon's strength passed through the rift into Incendi. Planes are mostly incompatible - what happens in one plane cannot easily be converted in another plane. It is a different state of existance. The Daemon's strength was his knowledge.
The Knowledge was too powerful, and "leaked" intellect of the magics.
A powerful group of mages (those who had learned of The Knowledge) revealed themselves to the outside world four hundred and sixty four years ago. They began to use their powers to attempt to stage an uprising, against the emperor of the land. This is Emporer Aramar, and his kingdom, the Aramar Empire, stretches for many hundreds of miles in every direction. It encompases the lands of Golda'ea, Avalon, Aramidia, the Aldevan Plains, etc.
Emporer Aramar began to construct an army of soldiers against the mages. He ordered the death of all those who possessed The Knowledge, and his knew soldiers, the "Knights of the Temple" were to do his bidding.
Half of the Knights under Aramar's power split, in that they saw nothing good could come from this war. A revolution began, with mages on both sides of the battlefield amongst the normal soldiers. The lands were torn, and Aramar was split in two. There is to this day no clear border between Avalon and the new Aramidia, there is just the neutral strip of land known as Golda'ea.
Through all this the southern kingdom of Nia stayed neutral.
The Absith Empire of the South East, through ruler Sari Absin, saw what had happened and began to mobilise towards Aramidia in the hopes of keeping its empire. To everyone's surprise it was not Aramidia who staged the counter attack, rather the mage cult, who obliterated the empire under a wave of sand.
Four hundred and thirty five years ago; Avalon attempt to fight the Magi. This battle takes place on Aramidian soil. This leads to the fall of Eastern Aramidia. People begin to pray, to hope something is out there, in Eastern Aramidia. Their prayers are answered. The close proximity to The Knowledge causes a split in The Rift, allowing belief to take control. Three ordinary people, unaware and unwilling, find themselves Gods. These are Xenus, Arsonas, and Titus.
This marks the beginning of the War of Gods.
Xenus ordered the death of all mages and was defeated, by those he sought to kill. Xenus was replaced as God by the ruler of the mages at the time, Fenrir.
Arsonas was fought by the mighty warrioress Kendra, and was defeated. Kendra took Arsonas' place as God(ess).
Zen, a warrior-mage from Aramidia, found his way to the highest peak of the world to fight the Gods, for he saw they were at fault for starting the war. Zen defeated Titus and became God himself.
The wars ended, with a settlement between Kendra, Xenus, and Zen, the new Gods.
The split in The Rift did not just let the Gods through however. It also allowed the Daemonic Plane access to Incendi. Do not take it the wrong way - the Daemonic Plane is not evil, Daemons as we know them do not exist there. But the split between planes, the Rift, corrupts and changes even the strongest of minds.
