Tool is my favorite band. All of their songs are my favorite, even the silly little segues they have(Harry Manback and (-)Ions in particular). I enjoy Tool mainly because their songs have amazing structure, great instrumentation, and their lyrics leave a lot for personal interpretation. Their vocals are nice, their drums are excellent(Danny Carey is one of the greatest of modern times), and although simple, their guitarist comes up with some of the greatest riffs and plays in some crazy time signatures. I recommend any fan of progressive rock, art rock, and alternative metal to check Tool out. They are amazing, and for all the right reasons.

I don't think I can narrow it down to a one, or even a couple, artists. Although, I do tend to listen to the same genre. (Or rather, family of genres.) Progressive, Symphonic, Power?, and a few other terms are used to describe the stuff I listen to.

Pandora.com is really how I got to all of these. One of my friends showed me Nightwish, one of Finland's many symphonic metal bands, and I fell in love with 'em.

Through Pandora, I found quite a bit of good stuff... (As of now, iTunes Library is at 1,385 songs. Not all of that is metal. I have some video game soundtracks and some piano stuff.)

Here's just a few of the really good ones. I'll list a positive and a negative.

Nightwish (I love both Tarja and Anette's vocals, and their keyboardist should be given some kind of award. That guy is genius. Can't think of any huge drawbacks right off the bat.)

Epica (Best Female vocal I've ever heard. Accompanied by the absolute worst and most annoying male growly/screechy undertone vocal. He single-handedly ruins about half of each album.)

Kamelot (Excellent vocal style, fantastic use of violins and orchestra. Not a huge fan of the really long interludes though.)

Symphony X (Phenomenal guitar job, inspired by Malmsteen and classical music. Not my absolute favorite vocal.)

Sonata Arctica (Like the vocals....like the use of the organ in some of their stuff. Not something you hear all the time. I *love* their first few albums, but I'm not super-impressed with the direction they took with Unia. But it's still good.)

Serenity (Flat out awesome. Love 'em. Love the vocal, love the instrumentation.)

Seventh Wonder (Usage of major and minor keys, best male vocal I've heard yet. Mercy Falls is breathtaking. Usage of the bass guitar makes things a bit more interesting. Could use a bit more piano, I think.)

Within Temptation (Better than Evanescence. I really liked them, but once I heard Within Temptation's stuff....well, it's just a lot cooler, I think.)

@ericgore: BTBAM is amazing for just the fact that they don't always have to be heavy and scream. Listen to Backwards Marathon, or Selkies[the endless obsession].

@fallacia: I have never even heard of any of those people. :thumb:

But yeah, I loves classical music, some grunge, a lot of good progressive metal, and I absolutely HATE rap & hip-hop(and R&B).

I listen mainly to electronic (trip-hop, trance, random shit), metal (mainly progressive or avant-garde), a little classical (preference for fairly modern Russian composers), rock (prog, classic, indie). I'm a big fan of jazz mixed with other things, such as metal or electronic, but not so much on its own, and I tend to like my music technical. I've been listening mainly to electronic lately. Scrolling through my iPod, here are a few bands:

Metal:
Agalloch, Arcturus, Cynic, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Emperor (their album Prometheus, anyway), Ephel Duath, Kayo Dot, maudlin of the Well, Nightwish, Opeth, OSI, Peccatum, Queensryche, Spiral Architect, Sun Caged, Therion

Electronic:
The Birthday Massacre, Ferbi Boys, Fischerspooner, The Future Sound of London, Justice, Massive Attack, Morcheeba, The Orb, Orbital, Squarepusher, Thievery Corporation, Ulver (idk, Ulver is weird and all of their albums are different, but I'll put them with electronic), Underworld

Rock:
The Arcade Fire, The Beatles, Cul de Sac, The Mars Volta, Michael Jackson (more pop, but w/e), Porcupine Tree, Queen, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rush, Sigur Ros, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Who, Yoko Kanno

Classical:
Beethoven, Dvorak, Holst, Orff, Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich

i can dig the smooth lounge-y jazz. the fast wankey stuff i don't care for tho. all the songs pretty much just sound the same but with different chord progressions to me.:\

well, there is kind of a formula, but free-form jazz is usually just a bunch of random chords that sound could together. And that's why it so awesome.

By the way, does anyone else here shred on the guitar? Like shred no country or any of that.

mhh seemed like I forgot some ,

I Died : this is talent , so young and having guitar play better then you an imagin , screaming that gives me the creeps and clean vocals that remind me of In Fear and Faith (thats can only be positive) ..
("Homesick" and "Road to recovery" are great examples of this).

Also Underoath (mainly there older stuff , when they still where deathcore)..

"We are the ocean" is also pretty sweet ..But the lead vocalst is lasy (well he only screams and you barely hear screaming ..)

mhh I listen to more thn 120 band but i think thats covers the ne I lsten to most (together with earlier post)

i play the guitar. well, i used to. i've lost interest in it as my instrument of choice shifted to the ukulele.

and tbh i can't list what i listen to on the internet without seeming like a pretentious fuck who's trying too hard to be diverse.

90% if what I listen to regularly was recorded in the late 60's, 70's, and maybe a little from the 80's (though when synthesizers begin to dominate, I lose all interest).

Zepp, CCR, Queen, Beatles, Floyd, Dylan, Skynyrd, Hendrix, Joplin, Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Blue Oyster Cult, Grand Funk Railroad, real early Aerosmith (read: not anything after 1985), early Elton John (again, nothing after 1985), AC/DC, Blondie, Deep Purple, Iron Butterfly, Eagles, early Tom Petty ... Etc.

More recent-day bands which pique my interest include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Gorillaz (rip ;-;), Muse, Smashing Pumpkin (usu. covers), Flogging Molly ... I know there are more but for some reason it's slipping my mind.

When I want low-key I'll turn to orchestral music: Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Bach, Brahms. But I'll listen to almost anything acoustic or non-lyrical, especially Spanish music. I just couldn't drop names for it.

I also like rap on occasion, but mostly shit from the late 80's and early 90's, when the lyrics were deeper, and they were still using analog mixers.

I just can't take modern country or emo/late grunge. Makes me grind my teeth.

@ven: I like a LOT of the stuff you mentioned.

@cruelty: Look at my profile, I'm almost nineteen. Is that old to you? Old music dominates new music, for two reasons.

1) There's a lot more passion, and love for the music.

2) Most rock songs from the 1900s were drug songs, and drug songs are funny.
Have you heard the Beatles 'I am the Walrus'? Have you heard the legend of how Iron Butterfly came up with the title 'In a Gadda da vida'?

Legend has it, that the song was supposed to be called 'In the garden of Eden', but their singer was so high that he kept saying 'In a gadda da vida'.
And thus, a weird song is born.

i was talking about venetia cause she's like 57 and a half :fap:

new music is better. we gots goa, technical death metal, happy hardcore, trance, and justin timberlake.

newer technical death metal blows dude.
(by the way, BTBAM is progressive metal, and not very new. Can;t use them against me^^)

Proof of newer metal sucking:

Dragonforce - They suck click through a straw(which is impossible, unless you have a really big straw). Herman Li can't even play ttfaf up to speed.

Killswitch Engage: Oh god, do I have to go into detail?

Slipknot: Oh, let's scream our heads off and play the same riff over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over until our listeners go insane! That'll make us popular!

See what I mean?

Wait wait wait, are you badmouthing Killswitch Engage and Slipknot ? *Passes guitar, microphone, and drumset* Do better... they're both amazing bands with more talent than you'll ever have...
