FF9 in its greatness is sort of like comparing the length of ark's full animation compared to the animation sequence for "Fire," where FF9 is Ark and the next best in the series (I have to say FF4, though I'm biased since that's the Final Fantasy game I played after MQ.) is fire.
Not really. They had the same concept artist, but most of the FF8 team broke off and formed Nautilus(who later made the Shadow Hearts series) following the game's release.
I guess you also forgot the melodramatic plot that passed as a "love" story. I wonder if I start wearing leather jackets and wielding gun-swords women will flock to me even though I brush them off constantly with a simple "meh."
Let's also not forget the completely anti-climactic 4th disc and random badguys who've apparently been around for centuries but only recently reveal themselves to attack our intrepid heroes for no reason.
But it's good you can form your own opinions instead of just saying "good graphics its a GOOD GAEM!" i respect that

I'm currently trying to figure out why I love Shadow Hearts so much.... it might be the giant cats and 1900s timeline but it's one of the more refreshing Japanese RPG series. It knows that it's goofy and doesn't try to be all hardcore and serious.
Shadow Hearts is classic. Probably my favorite RPG franchise as of recent. It doesn't take itself seriously and the battles system awards the better players (I beat the last boss in two attacks).
lol, artbane we're talkin bout Final Fantasy man XD (but i agree SH was the game)
back on-topic:
for a long, long time i was in denial that any other RPG was better than 7, but thinking about it numerous times leads me to say this: FF9 owns'em all...
gripping story (the most gripping to me in terms of the way they delivered such emotion), plus the game exhibited the sheer beauty of yer favorite summons (Bahamut, Odin, and Atomos, and the greatest display (not actual summon) Alexander).
my ranking greatest-least:
1.) FF9 - nuff said, correct?
2.) FF7 - beautiful characters and story, but just not better than 9...
3.) FF10 - I agree with whoever said Seymour constantly ^^
4.) FFTA - I loved the totemas and the battle system
5.) FF3 - I liked Gilgamesh...
6.) FF1 - I just really liked this one tho it had no story wutsoever...
7.) FF8 - I hated this game... a little... it was just boring... ppl will probably be flame me, but i don't care...
8.) FF2 - It was boring too
More into FFX:
I really liked 10. It was a beautiful game and the fact that Tidus was such a wuss (yet you could really make him kick ass), Lulu was a sexy, powerful bitch, Wakka was a jamaican-asif, and all the other characters had their problems it really made the game peace together nicely. I mean the contrast of characters really made the game seem much larger than it actually was, and it was beautiful. And if you notice, the series did that alot with almost all its games. for example: FF9 - Zidane was street scum who took on the godly Graham and Kuja... FF7 - it was a bit different as Cloud is now the base of almost every single character (cool, laid back, wears an earring, gets the girl), but he was a failure experiment of some sort that actually came back to defeat Sephiroth the greatest of the experiment. FFX - of course was Tidus, a boy from another world cast into another world, which he knew little of and grows to take on beasts such as the Ultima Buster...
I liked FF Tactics for the Zodiac Brave story.
I was disapointed in FF Tactics Advance, the story could have been better. The battles were all basicly the same and got old fast.
All other FF games are ranked the same to me. they all have their pros and cons.
You really need some medicine. That "lololol" and other outbursts are rather annoying and childish.
And I heard you say in the Radiata Stories thread that 'the main character is a cookie cutter character who is generic in most RPGs."
Guess what, friend? That's Tidus. And FF10 has a great deal of cookie cutter characters.
Auron- mysterious swordsman.
Kimarhi- quiet loner.
Lulu- bitter woman.
Wakka- comic relief at times.
Yuna- The girl without father/the only hope/destiny.
Tidus- The man who had his home destroyed.
As I said; overused.
FF8 had new features which all FFs didn't have- a completely different magic system. (most other magic systems in FF are similar in ways.) and a different way to raise stats other than to battle creatures for hours on end.
I dunno, I find them rather pleasant. It's like rexxz's inherent assholishness, but more sarcastic :>
anyway ontopic i have been playing ff6 on and off and i'm really actually starting to see some of marcus's points in-game. it's moved up to number two on my list!

All the FFs had new features which all the other FFs did not have. All. Even the ones thattry the most to be traditional like FFIX feature new stuff. The constant need to re-invent the FF series itself is one of it's biggest traditions, and FFVIII is not the only one who does that.
a completely different magic system. (most other magic systems in FF are similar in ways.) and a different way to raise stats other than to battle creatures for hours on end.
There's also the GF's system, which allowed you to power up your summons and customise them for the first time in the series. Etc. But my point stands, FFVIII wasn't the only FF to have unique features.
Rofl. I don't care how often Square tries to reinvent the series, they've only ever succeeded once, which happens to be one of the best Final Fantasy games out there.
Final Fantasy X-2.
Its completely different from any other Final Fantasy as far as gameplay goes, which is exactly what the Final Fantasy series needed. I'm sure that Squarenix just took the Final Fantasy name, and even a step further the Final Fantasy X world, and applied it to a game concept they had that could have worked with anything, but fuck the results are good.
The gameplay is fun, fast paced and original. The storyline isn't even that bad. As a sequel to Final Fantasy X, yeah I can see why people bash it, but as far as storylines go (in the Final Fantasy series), its even more unique than the game itself. Its fun, off and on serious, and fun of rich advancements to the already lacking Final Fantasy X storyline... it just didn't exactly run the same way. Which in my opinion is good, but like I said, I can see why people would think it a bad thing.
The only thing I liked about FFX - 2 was the battle system. I missed using Bestia in the game and the only thing I didn't play it a second time was the story. But I have to say the costume changing system was great. If they only had combined it with a better story it would be awesome.
Yeah, he did really ruin it, and it got 1000 times worse when he fell for Rinoa. He went from being annoying, to being shootable.
Quistis didn't have much of a personality though.
I dont know why anyone liked FF10. The story was bad the game was to easy. The characters were dumb. And who cares about the graphics. And i didnt like the music
It wasn't my favorite FF, but it certainly wasn't the worst.
<Rant>
The characters weren't dumb, only Tidus and maybe Wakka. Auron was cool, but kinda wierd.
I loved the battle system, turn based where you could alter the turns of people, it's amazing. The Aeon system was THE Best summon system in any of the games, FF8's comes second.
Sure, the storyline wasn't the best, it was kinda weak, but as soon as you beat *Insert Macalania Temple Boss Here*, it really gets going, and the whole "Pilgramige" thing wears off, which is good. The idea behind Tidus sucked though.
Yes it was VERY easy, but I'll tell you three things:
Seymour Flux
Yunalesca
Evrae
Overdrive Sin
Those four where, IMO, VERY hard bosses. The other ones weren't that hard, but some did put up a fight. As soon as you get near the end, all of the enemies become mini-bosses, which makes the game a lot harder. The final boss was adverage difficulty, but that solely depended on how well you could grasp the Sphere Grid. Speaking of the final boss, it brings me to the next part of my rant:
How can you say the music sucked?!? It was one of the best for any FF game. Otherworld, Suteki Da ne, ect. Sure, the Boss battle music was different, and in my opinion, for the worst, but most of the other music was great. The battle music was slightly cheery, but still quite a good piece of music. The other REALLY good pieces of music was Seymours theme, both battle and non-battle. I think they outdid themselves with the music for them. It was so catchy, IMO, the best theme and battle theme for any FF game, second to Kuja's.
Speaking of Seymour, he is one of the greatest bad guys out there. Sure, he doesn't DO much, but he does more than people like Sephiroth. Sephiroth looked good, and had a great story behind him, but he didn't actually do anything. More in the spoiler thingy:
Seymour was insane. He wanted to take control of Sin, and he nearly did that. He killed his father, and still managed to get into the Maesters. He manipulated the Maesters onto his side, turning them against your party. He even turned ALL of the Guado's on you. He forcefully married Yuna, and after he did, had the Measers order to KILL HER! How much cooler can you get? He has a great voice, and lets face it:
The hair rocks.
*Cough Cough* I can't belive I just ranted that much on one of the adverage FF games.....Wow.

lol hay guys my post contains a bunch of spoilers for FF10 so it's best if you just don't read this at all if you haven't played it and really want to.
I'm glad I annoy you with TEXT lololol. It's not like I'm screaming in your ear.
And Tidus just didn't have his home destroyed; he didn't exist... at all. He was a figment of Bahamut's imagination and was destined to die from the very beginning. I think of... er, 2 other games that did that; Klonoa 2 (although you technically existed; klonoa was a planeswalker or something)and Planescape Torment where you actually had to kill yourself to advance in the story sometimes. SOUNDS VERY COOKIE CUTTER LOL
Although I already mentioned how the supporting characters were pretty bad except Auron who had an interesting backstory of romance and intrigue that you could watch via story spheres and kihmari who, although having maybe 10 lines of dialog in the first 40 hours, actually went through some serious changes once you got to his homeland. Tidus went through several noticeable character developments (those of you who bothered playing the game would have noticed how he went from whiny to arrogant to really pissed off at the world after finding out the truth of Yuna).
Jack Russel was an impressionable idiot who couldn't form an opinion of his own and fucked up the world all because he felt like swinging his sword and tossing around sarcastic dialog.
I don't get why people say FFX was easy.... Anyone tried to defeat the dark Aeons(sp?)? I had a playtime of 180 hours before defeating the dark Magus Trio. Another 10 before beating Deus, the second hardest enemy in the game and I never beat the hardest enemy in the game. (I don't know his english name, his german name was "Der Richter" what means in english "The Judge")

Agreed. It was a lot of fun, the story want a huge thing but really, people who know good stories arent turning to FF to fill their need to begin with. I really liked 60% of the game being optional. I stopped trying to get the dislike, since it seems to boil down to a bunch of guys thinking scantly clad female heroes are "gay"(?) so the whole game is bad.
