What are you working on? (Game Making Thread)

Heyooo sorry it's been so long without update! Been a lot going on so I haven't had much chance to post here.

Remi-chan / Biz
My workload has mainly been to reduce dialogue to shorter more succinct and impactful segments, I haven't entirely finished doing this yet, but it's a work in progress and I'm a good ways towards done with main story content. flavor text will mostly be unaffected, optional events will vary on a case by case basis.

I've also been working on remastering several of the cinematics that I felt didn't meet the par established in late disk 1. As a result they may also be significantly shorter. Here's but a small taste of my work on that.

The fight with Pep has also been reduced harshly in difficulty, his Zodiac Graveyard ability now does 10 damage (down from 40) which was the thing most often responsible for killing players time and time again. The damage effects have now been brought in line with other bossfights and color coded to match their mechanics.

As seen I've also been slowly chipping away at Disk 2, but I want to make the dialogue matchy-matchy before i go writing an entire disks worth of it.

Xiie
She's done much, and is currently working on the sprite for Lily. She will send me all files when the laws of quarantine in her area become lax enough that a technician can go back to work and fix her internet connection.

Oh boy this kid has gotten me ALL the Renae, and last night I implemented it all, too! As well as sacreve for some reason, saves me doing it later I suppose.

Lots of body language!

He's gotten me the hero mode / battle theme for Nanianne, which is also, alike Remira and Zephyrra- her only theme.

He's also made a promising demo for X11 Tearing at the Simulation from Within ~Existential Planar Parade. It will be done by this coming Wednesday. The track in particular will play on Zen Aneia and other worlds when dealing with a crisis involving Planar.

To provide some insight, Planar are glitches given form, they know they exist, and know if they do balance must be restored, Xali has absorbed a lot of them by the time of Fantasia, making her dangerously glitched. She can erase, destroy and so on. She is also partial, meaning she can't be erased or destroyed via the typical conventions. Xali also seems to have gained control of them, so she often sends them to do busy work for her.

Planar don't have anything in the way of color beyond purple innards, they are otherwise essentially silhouettes, or like untextured models in a game. The purple eyes are likely Xali's influence.

Xali does have a small powerful presence in the story as do her children of calamity, and that plot thread shan't be resolved until later, until the final round.

A game that will come long after Fantasia is public knowledge.

So I found that my save file trick does work.
It just doesn't work between projects from different version updates. Now I can simply update the js files as well. But the problem is yanflys scripts - which everyone uses for some god forsaken reason - break so easily. Everyone else you just drag and drop an updated js file. But with yanfly it's like, you roll up a message script from v1.1 to v1.2, and it's only suppose to be a minor difference, but then your character can't walk or the game just doesn't work. Or something.
I swear 90% of the time, if theres a script related bug, it's yanfly. I had no love for them in the vx days. Mv isn't any better. Most people only need 1 or 2 things, but they download a beehive of scripts that I think are incompatible by design.

Lol yeah Yanfly sorta became the go-to for lazybones who want plug and play scripts. Generally I keep my scripts to a minimum, but even i usually end up with a good 10 or so of YANF's.

The people who go and grab every script that sounds cool are kinda dumb though. My rule is I don't look for a script until I need it.

Oh also CoyoteCraft, in regards to Sven, his major trait is courtesy, which may help with writing him as a character in red cat goes to wacky wonderland dream sequence.

Like he is defined by his manners and being courteous, when Nola is with the union their first night, he lets her sleep in his bed, knowing it's unlikely he'd be able to sleep anyway, and he does several other acts of kindness that could be construed as courtesy, his family members all have a kind of thing they're all about pep's is obvious, Nola is justice, Sped is vigilance, Svoli is love, Kara is pride.

It may sound weird but i just have found some subconcious correlation to my characters and colors, paler calers are positive, darker colors are negative, white is pore positivity or LOVE, while black is pure negativity or HATE, Then Red = Passion, Orange = Vigilance, Yellow = Justice, Green = Kindness, Cyan = Patience, Blue = Independance, Purple = Pride.

If you look at Sped design, he's very much a kind, somewhat passionate, independant and has a small sense of justice just by the colors that make him. Svoli mean while has a lot of cyan (or pale blue) which is positive patience, pale orange, meaning she's vigilant, but not in a way that would harm those close to her, and then red, because she's passionate, she also has a small ioata of black in her ribbons, which is her hatred of Esperia that is still running strong decades later.

It's a shame the places I put my notes on color theory to characters are all closed down or dead, it was quite an interesting discovery.

Loving the body language. Actually engages you with what they're saying.
Thanks, I've been doing that since back when I did the art for my games and my artists have followed suit well..

It just doesn't work between projects from different version updates.
There is in-built security with a random number key that stops you from editing saves basically. But if that can be disabled, and you didn't mind potentially being able to edit saves, that could be bypassed.

Much as the Final Round with an Impious Glitch is a fair ways away, I do have to define her as a character this coming disk, which is when she makes her first move in any of my games.

Alike usual when I start writing about an intriguing concept, i do a lot and i do it very fast, and before I know it I have 4,500 words written and an entire backstory pieced together. You can see that in spoilers if you like to read. This covers the Locust War and the Rise of Xali and how she met her likewise kin who would become known as the Children of Calamity.
The Locust War: for context. Was an incredibly one-sided war where the Empirians assembled an unholy unity and did all in their might to oppose the Twins, not for the gain of the universe of course, ill-gain. They did not understand the twins could not be destroyed, even if defeating them in combat was possible, did they even manage that?

No. Not even close, it was a truly impressive armada, armed to the teeth, they could have done away with it all in an instant, but Yi decided to let the hope they could win manifest, and then tear them all down. Wi, being no fan of the empirians, let Yi play her games, knowing that whatever way they were brought to extinction, it would be done, and their blight removed from the cosmos. None of these Imperians had names, why bother? There was no sentimental attachment in their society. Why give a subject of torment the dignity of a name? It was foolish, their entire race was built of the perfection of brutality, nothing else mattered. Whoever got in the way of perfection, tormented beyond repair, or the victor in revenge, would return the favor. A race built on disharmony and bloodshed, on the euphoria and adrenaline of killing. The only type of love was that between prey and predator, of the chase and flirting with death. It is through this love of danger and death that the empirians unionized for the first and last time against the Twins, who had marked their reprehensible species for death. There were no commanders, just lots of ships, lots of guns, and an empirian behind each one. The entire race had cooked themselves a suicide… all but one.

She too, had no name. But she could see the folly of her race’s endeavor, and instead went into hiding. The only thing she knew at this stage, is that she wasn’t going to die so early. She cared not for the abbadon of her people, nor the ego which led them into their rigormortis. Like her species, she was unflinchingly in love with the prospects of tormenting people, hearing their screams, moans and watching their mental fortitude collapse.

The Locust War raged on for twenty years, as Yi pretended to be wounded, retreating, letting them find her, and then killing a few more, before “fleeing” in sight of their numbers, and then, at last, the entire fleet opposing her, they unleashed everything… but instead of acting injured, she was now going to ensure they knew what it meant to oppose FEAR.

As the smoke of distasteful weaponry cleared, emerged an unharmed Insidious Architect, who then placed a large energy field locking the armies and her in together.

“You fools, fun as it’s been to toy with you for 20 years, it’s time I show you that opposing your fears will have consequences…”

With one.flick of her wrist, she sent a smaller ship careening through a big ship, and then, as if breaking an egg apart with her hands, the hull of another large ship was split into easily crumbled fragments, the Imperians for the first time, felt not fear that was exciting… but DREAD.

As their wits caught up to them, they tried all manner of escape, as Yi watched, smirking sadistically.
“You are most generous, all of you putting yourselves right into my hands… Now I can crush you all- such is the price of your defiance.”

She extends her palm open, and then shuts it, several ships are scattered into the raging winds of the telekinetic destruction, no Imperians were killed, Yi had planned on it, that was the ONLY way they could escape. But she had already taken care of all the ones in the words after, all that remained, were these- or so she thought.

In the next move, a scream exploded from every Imperian on the scene that shattered the shield Yi had placed and sent both a sigh of relief but also chills through every being in the cosmos, the one who was not present felt it too, but felt nothing, only a realization hit, that she was the only one left, and she was glad of it. Now only two could get in her way…

As the Insidious Architect watched in relieved joy as her subjects writhed into oblivion, and her erasure finished, she touched her hand to her cheek, feeling a sense of purpose and accomplishment she didn’t get to feel often.

Her work however, was not yet done. After disintegrating the mess, she made a beeline for the Imperian homeworld, and as expected, it was wholly empty- it made her delight to know they’d so conveniently made themselves so easy to bring to extinction.

This technology of theirs however, also posed a threat, their race truly was the peak of barbarism, Amongst naught but torture equipment and technologically advanced devices built for hostility, she stumbled upon but one single tome.

“The Imperian Oath”

Inside she read what could be assumed the shallow history of the Imperians, once a peaceful society, had found something that brought immense joy, torture and all kinds of ungodly activities were talked about as though miracles of recreation. Yi rolled her eyes, and erased the book, and after leaving it’s bloody atmosphere, the planet as well. All history of them had been erased, and all of them had been erased. The First Guardian had performed her duty, not realizing a straggler remained. She certainly thought of the possibility, but she knew of the empirians activities and they weren’t incredibly popular- so she’d catch wind of it if stragglers remained. And in small numbers they weren’t incredibly dangerous anyway. They were entirely irredeemable, and had been lost to the most depraved and unholy of blood sports, that had come to entirely engulf their race and identity. As a safeguard to this possibility, she put a price on the head of anyone resembling an Imperian, a hefty price. The Last Imperian was now the most wanted woman in the universe, and no one even knew her name- not even she did.

This would change, as she roamed the world she had crash landed on, she would stumble upon the enigmatic kitsune, the Last Imperian knew she would have to be careful and lay low a while, so she kept clear of civilization… exploring the vast alien world, she didn’t even want to burn it, but she certainly wanted to mess with those fluffy foxes- but she had escaped the fate of her species, and was not game to invite that trouble again. For a time, she was trapped- but in a fairly comfortable prison. She found beauty in the lands, even if her plan was to eventually conquer it, she’d maintain it’s pristine visage. The Purple Sun that loomed overhead gave her a sense of peace, which she needed with so little killing possible in her current life.

For millions of years she wandered this land, but eventually she started getting more game, and began inspecting the defenses of the two major civil powers of this world, the Morzan and the Aneian. She was more interested in Zen Aneia, the Kitsune there were all so pure, so innocent, so satisfying… to corrupt.

Eventually, she found her first target, the Nine-tails, noble elegance and immense stoicism- what a perfect person to corrupt, and knowing she was the leader of her people, to corrupt her is to then follow the entire nation. Due to the lack of war or bloodshed in this world, security was fairly loose, so it wasn’t long before she could begin, all she needed was a name.

“Xali”... she wanted it to start with X, a symbol that would become feared across the universe. The sigil of the Last Empirian, she who stands between their extinction and their exaltedness.

Xali at first approached Akra Olna as a friend, stating that she wasn’t from around here and crash landed some time ago, she took particular care to notion to the Regent Lady the truths she found, such as the world's beauty, and the lovely scent of solitude carried on the breeze. Akra Olna was always wary of her, but welcomed her as her own anyway. Xali really liked the Kitsune’s fashion style, elegant, if looks could kill, their fashion knew it. Akra Olna as a gift made Xali a dress, with the ‘X’ inscribed on the chest, Xali for the first time, felt bad that her plans for these fools were ultimately malicious, but she decided to hug Akra olna after putting it on, she knew she loved it.

“A shame you did all this for me only to be stabbed in the back after all~”

Akra Olna’s instincts kick in and she with a quick swish of her tails sends Xali spiralling into the nearby couch.

“I was always wary of you, but to think you’d sink this low…”

Xali heeded not her words, something better was engulfing her, a sensation she had almost forgotten over the millions of years… pain, fear- they were returning, and she was becoming excited, she got up and with open eyes and a joyous mouth she said the words Akra Olna would never forget.

“YES, FINALLY. I CAN FEEL AGAIN, I CAN BE- ME. AGAIN! COME AT ME WITH MORE OF THAT!”

Akra Olna is taken aback, never before had she seen a creature smile about being in pain… what the hell had she just awoken, she regained her composure.

“I’ll ask only once, Xali. Get out.”

Xali just tilted her head to the side.

“Now now… since when do you think you’ve been the one in control?”

Akra Olna now knows that this being has no good intent at all, and such a malicious presence would be a danger to her people. She swallows hard and leaps toward the Witch, who easily dodges, and grabs a pack of tarot cards from the table.

“I wonder… if you knew just what power such mundane items can contain ,when put into the hands of someone so creative~”

She pulls two XIII DEATH cards, and summons a scythe of immense shadow energy. Akra Olna looks at her in shock.

“You had the power to annihilate this entire kingdom from the first… why? Why hurt us, why hurt me, like this? I thought we were friends!”

Xali looks at her incredulously.... As if she should know the answer.

“What would be the fun of that? One day there’s a city, the next there isn’t? I really don’t get why you think that would appeal to me at all?”

Akra Olna gets seriously angry, she suddenly realized why she was wary of this creature, she was a wanted girl cosmos wide, there were even posters in her city that she hadn’t even placed! She tried to recall the way in which to report them if found as Xali’s grin grew wider, almost seeming to enjoy knowing that now she too was in danger. Akra Olna stops worrying about the report, and focuses on exterminating the creature, Xali is actually met with a challenge, Akra Olna was incredibly powerful, and while inexperienced in combat, learned quickly, though she enjoyed feeling in danger, her blood pumping, her adrenaline rushing, this was what every Imperian strove for… the ultimate hunt- be it for them, or for prey.

Eventually another being appeared, having detected the battle between the two and the dialect preceding it, the Insidious Architect too, had worked out what this girl was- it was time to finish it.

Upon seeing Yi, Xali knew this would have to end, be it with her or with her escape. As Yi approached menacingly, Xali stood her ground, and then cast an incredibly potent flash spell, it only disoriented Yi for a second, but that was all she needed, she knew this world like the back of her hand, and she would not be taken out here.

As soon as Yi saw her scamper off, she shrugged, she had someone more interesting to talk to, the first of her friends. The First: Witch Hunter. Akra Olna regains her senses, and finds the courage to look into the dragon lady’s eyes.

“It sure has been a day for visits… who might you be?”

Yi smiles, both polite and a fierce fighter. She was humbled.

“I’m the one who put up the wanted posters for the Witch you just finished sparring with. You did well.”

Akra Olna responds in shock…

“Y… you saw all of that?”

Yi places her finger near her eyes before responding.

“There is nothing in your universe I do not see, that being you just battled with is a blight upon this very reality, I had thought I had brought them entirely to extinction, but it seems one remains. Unlike most of her species, she’s smart enough to be patient, and can even seem to act out human emotions to elevate herself. It’s a shame, too- that was a nice dress you made her. Though I would congratulate you, if it didn’t mean saying you’d appealed to the tastes of a monster.”

Akra Olna feels dizzy, it’s clear this dragon-girl knew everything that had happened in the last 28 seconds, was it truly possible that she saw all?

“Are you… some kind of god?”

Yi smirks…

“I am what Gods fear. But you have naught to fear from me, I see in you an ally, for we have a common enemy. That won’t be her only attempt.”

Akra Olna is in dire need of answers, suddenly her people had a threat to concern themselves with.

“What was she trying to attempt exactly, it’s clear she had the power to kill me, but she was holding back…”

Yi answers, knowing now that it was too late to withhold information from her, they were friends at this point.
“She sought to corrupt you, to make you into what she is, a depraved tormentor who enjoys the thrill of the hunt to an obsessive and dark extreme, from you she could influence the rest of your people. I’ve never seen Imperians employ the tactic before, but it makes her incredibly dangerous- even alone.”
Akra Olna stays silent, feeling resentment for being led on to think Xali was her friend.
“You may call me Yi, by the way. Most mortals don’t get the honor of knowing my real name, but then…”
Yi extends her open palm
“Most mortals don’t get to be my friend, either.”

Akra Olna smiles as she accepts the pick me up from Yi, Yi is immensely enjoying this too, a sense of camaraderie she had not felt properly in a long time.

“To the witch, you shall be the Hunter, I nominate you- Akra Olna, as the first of the witch hunters, and your world, will be spared cyclic destruction no other worlds are granted. Organize your defences and make sure that the last empirian can’t get in. You’re more than capable, so I’ll leave how you handle that to you.”

Meanwhile Xali has escaped to a dense bamboo forest. Wherein she finds something she’s never discovered on this world, a dense fount of shadow energy, she moves towards it and a portal in the shallows of a pond is revealed, before she can get too close, a being floats out of it, with lavender hair, a one piece dress, a golden hairband and deep pink eyes, she sees Xali and looks intrigued.

“What a beautifully evil presence… I was beginning to think I was alone in this universe.”

Xali could tell with one look, this girl didn’t need corrupting, this girl was already several steps into no-one’s land.

“So, you coming?” The mysterious girl enters through the portal she floated out of, Xali follows fearlessly in pursuit. Passion and curiosity has overtaken any liability to fear.

She arrives at an unusually magnificent starship with the darkened touches one who brings shadow would be lost without.

“You came here for a fight, did you not?”

Xali grins at the mere thought of it.

“Try not to die too quickly!”

The girl giggles to herself.

“Wouldn’t dream of it, darling~”

In a flash vicious unholy tenatacles skirt perilously around their battlefield like snakes running from their own tail, Xali and her new friend cut them down in the thousands as they clash in a battle of sun-shattering proportions, after they both are exhausted, neither bearing any injuries beyond scuff marks, the girl introduces herself, now knowing she had found kinship in Xali.

“I am glad we met, I go by Xaela, and I am in command of the horrorterrors that writhe about in the darkest pits of deep space. They are all at my beck and call, such is my corruptive wont.”

Xali is teeming with love for everything she is hearing.

“I am Xali, the last Imperian. It seems my brilliant idea of affixing an X to my namesake was not as lone-wolf as I thought, but I am glad to see you understand why I did it.”

Xaela nods in agreement.

“The icon that will terrorize the universe, all the other letters are too common.”

Xali emphatically adds

“Giving that stupid triangle-eyed freak a run for her money!”

Xaela chuckles, she can tell this is going to go well.

“It seems we have a lot in common, and we have plenty of enemies, furthermore our goals align, as it stands you are incredibly powerful, stronger than even the Regent Lady of Zen Aneia, however you can only terrorize one world… unless I help you ofcourse! Kitsune are difficult to corrupt, definitely a prize worth ambition, but it seems their leader has just made a pact with the triangle-eyed freak as you so politely named her…”

She ponders to herself a moment before smirking.

“I’m sure we can do better than that.”

Xali takes no offense.

“I like your style! So, you function as my dark taxi, and we both get a mutual kinship that benefits us both? Sounds good to me! You seem to understand, unlike the rest of my now extinct people, that the Embodiment of Terror cannot be beaten by conventional means.”

Xaela’s eyes relax as she smiles, seeming to be in bliss she’d at last found someone who understood...

“I see we are in agreement, with that settled, I have already prepared a promising destination. I have discovered a large influx of energy similar to ours, evil energy, on Zen Nekoma. We should start by forming an alliance with those who already understand where we stand, then we can begin corrupting those less ready.”

Xali can see this Xaela is smart and dependable, she offers no hesitation.

“Lead the way~”

They avoid being spotted to the best of their abilities, Xaela knew, as Xali did, that the entire universe wanted at least one of them, and not in a good way, although the thought of being cosmically hunted did naught but thrill Xali, she was eager to rip, tear, torment, kill and annihilate again. With a universe of weaklings after her, she knew some would happen upon her, and she would enjoy their cries as they would plead for mercy. Now with Xaela she could disappear in an instant, so the moment a certain someone showed up, she could get outta dodge before anything could happen.

They see a shadow swoop over them, Xaela’s head tilts to see a centralization of shadow energy, evil to the core- this was the one. With a thunderous thud which shook the earth, the flying personification of death landed, as she poised her hand on her hip and raised her still-bloodied hand to her lip, Xali felt her heart begin to race… what a perfect being, the talons of a raptor, the enchanting grace and beauty of a femme fatale, and the wings and ears of a feathered siren, while being transfixed upon the eyes of a bird of prey. Xaela steps toward the creature and introduces herself, she feared not her survival, she too was too busy basking in the glory of the perfect torture machine given life.

“Greetings, most evil of creatures, I am Xaela, and if you would like to fight your empty heart craves…”

Xaela opens a portal to her place.

“Then follow me.”

Xali smirks while looking back at the creature, before nodding, it follows them into the abyss.

“Nice place you have here, so- you both wanna fight me at once?”

Xali is immediately down for this.

“How perfect! We all get to enjoy ourselves!”

They draw their weapons and another clash of unimaginable scale proceeds to take place, Xali and Xaela fight each other as well as their new like-minded playmate, after the dust settles and all three are worn out, they make their introduction.

“I don’t really have a name, but I am a Fowlhunter, unlike most of my kin- I’ve this insatiable lust for combat and tormenting people.”

Xali pipes up excitedly

“With talons like that I can’t say I blame you! I’m looking at a machine of unyielding torment and I love it!”

Xaela smiles softly before speaking.

“How does the name Xeltara sound? Quite a nice pick isn’t it? That whole ‘starting with an X’ thing.. It would do us well to be as feared impresently as presently. Ripen our would-be victims to their painful drawn out slaughter, no?”

Xali is excessively blushing at this point, Xaela’s way of making such typically unseemly words fit elegantly into a tight serene statement was something she adored about her. She made what most consider obscene and vile, beautiful and natural. People will go to all lengths to hide from the monster within, it is only at the peak of their depravity that such fierce and relentless a beast will emerge, the final push towards defying what they were, and becoming what they are. Xaela had clearly been there, she had been brought to that low, low point early in life, and embraced killing, embraced torture and the adrenaline and endorphins that rush when comitting and being victim to it. Xali knew that she understood as well as she did, that there was no need for a mask, it is but make up to hide the monster within. No creature is born purely righteous, no religion entirely pious. Xali understood this better than anyone, she had learned from a young age who she really was, and she enjoyed the primal uncompromising nature of herself, it made her feel so powerful- so absolutely in control. Meeting her like-minded peers in all this, it made it clear beyond doubt.

Anything could be corrupted, no matter how pure. All it would take, is a little push!

“Hah! It’s like you peered into my mind, found the literally PERFECT name and showed it to me!”

Xaela reveals something even Xali had not expected…

“It’s because that is precisely what I did.How do you think I found you?”

It made sense, she saw Xali’s intent from the first, and accepted her before they’d even fought. Xali honestly didn’t mind, she’d have no reason to lie to Xaela anyway… and having one who could read minds was so perfect for finding out how to torture them best. She doesn’t even act shocked.

“Nice!”

Xaela smiles at Xali.

“I’m full of surprises like that. I didn’t have a name before I met you, thank you for the inspiration~”

This was confirming that she was not only capable of reading minds, that she was also able to do it with multiple minds at a time, and seemingly never stopped. Xaela nods, as if confirming what Xali had already thought to herself, a tear of pride rolls down Xali’s cheek.

“I am a Seer of Eld, before the cosmos was splintered into the several universes of today, there was a being of unimaginable virtue, named Sata-N. Unlike Yi, she saw compassion in mortals- helped along by a mortal man named Kyoshi, whom she admitted love for.

I was one of the Seers chosen to keep watch on the dark unspoken horrors of the universe.”

One of the dark tentacles waves gestationally before Xaela continues.

“When Yi discovered Sata-N had gone against her ruling, she flat out shattered the being into four shards, and the Seers which were entrusted by Sata-N were removed from play… except one. With the help of these eldritch blackdeath gods, I was able to conceal myself and with newfound dark strength, and a desire to unmake what Yi had brought about, I travelled to all corners of the cosmos, searching for someone who would share the same love for for violence and secretly disrespecting Yi as I had… and it was in the most unlikely of places that I found her.”

Xaela turns to Xali.

“It was you. It was always going to be you.”

Xali blushes a little, her purple blood giving her cheeks an unusual tint.

“So what made these--?”

Xaela starts responding before Xali finishes asking, she could have waited, but she’s just showing off at this point.

“I was their means of existing outside of their prison, I’m sure you’ve heard of the mamix, an interconnecting series of walls that divide the universes, inside of which lies two things, the Enma, and my buddies here.”

One of the eldritch tentacles just waves a hat like a gentleman, it’s almost humorous to watch.

“The Enma is the gatekeeper, nothing goes in or out of the mamix without her knowledge, that is until… I came along. Given my powers as a Seer of Eld, I could answer the questions of the Gatekeeper before she’d thought of the false answer, the answer she wanted was the first to coalesce. I now have purchased free reign of both domains and all cosmic entities so long as I use my portals to get there.”

Xeltara, who is now getting excited to do some damage, asks Xaela the question they all kinda wondered.

“What’s next then?”

Xaela smiles, and looks affectionately towards Xali.

“Ultimately, it will be you who leads us, you are without doubt the strongest and most cunning, I only can carry the illusion of wit through being able to see what you decipher as intelligence. You are ultimately going to be the card player here, and given that you utilize that deck so effectively, that metaphor is very much literal, as well.

Xali knows that it is then…

“Well then, guess it’s time to sate our urges. Find us a planet of savages who think their tough… and we will show them what savagery really looks like!”

Xaela sees the genius in the plan immediately.

“Ah, and because Yi has no love for savages, she is unlikely to detect us no matter how barbaric it becomes.”

Xali just grins and her eyes flare with violet rays. A look befitting a being soon to kill millions upon millions of people. Xeltara greedily licks her lips as her eyes slant.

“I’m sure you two would like to see me in action.”

Xali turns to her with Xaela in tow, and both smirk in agreement. They both wanted to see what this predator could do with its prey.

And so became known the Children of Calamity.

@Ellie: Pretty sure that's just the way it encodes the json file into .rpgsave. So yeah, you can't just open it in notepad and make changes that way. But there's nothing stopping me from editing one within a game. For example, I can look at save files from PERSEVERANCE in my test project. I can technically edit it from there too. One step removed from my universal save file idea. Although for playtesting purposes it might be practical to edit an existing file.
Of course the goal I set for myself to turn on the playtesting flag so I can walk through walls an look variables & switches, can be done a number of different ways. The easiest being just to edit the .js files directly so that it's always on. That kinda trivialize everything.
But the real fun - the challenge I was taking on - was to do something within the game. Load a universal/hacked save file like gameshark/gamegenie.
And like I said, the built in playtesting tools depend on version updates. With Mv, if you didn't update your project correctly when MV moved from like v1.3 to 1.5, I think, the playtest tools were broken. I'm not sure why. I just know it gave people headaches. You could play normally, but you couldn't hold ctrl to walk through everything or F9 to manually set switches and variables.
So in those cases, even if I rigged something special up it wouldn't work anyways unless I "fixed" the js files in the end.

Well I think I'm done playing around now. Time to put scripting down and pick up...er, script writing. The playwright kind. Put my dramatist hat on.
It's funny how Rpg Maker has "Scenes" and calls the player characters "Actors", and everything is expressed through "Events"
But's it's not the same thing. At. ALL.

Lets see, I was looking for intrinsic motivation. "Curiosity" is kinda weak, I've already considered it. It can pull a character like Alice through wonderland because it's more of an instinct like hunger which is actually more extrinsic even though it's literally inside. Like a character hates vegetables but eats them anyways. Dramatic Irony? No, he was starving. Curiosity can be a legit driver if it looks like the answer is within reach. But it's like running down an endless corridor. And I think Sven is smart enough to recognize a wild goose chase. The question though is why would he want to chase it? With Alice, she chases the white rabbit because she's a little girl who is easily entertained. She's never seen a rabbit in a waistcoat. And there's the burning question of what he's late for. She wants to know, but she doesn't need to know. It's not a solution to anything.
With Sven, the idea that these 2 tyrants are compromised has promise. But again, he's too smart to not think it's too good to be true. At the very least I could use it as a call back (forward?) to a line in the original game. Something about him sneaking into a movie theater but it was a gorefest. I'm sure his danger senses are screaming "Don't go in there!" Plus another line, about how Esperia gives him bloody nightmare. So he'd double expect it. Is that a thing?
I have one moment where Sven is compelled beyond reason. And that's the possibility that the Perseverance Hideout is compromised. In my early drafts Sven starts in a nightmare slaughter house, but then the bat character pulls him out. And they go dream hopping.
There are many reasons I abandoned "starting" the story this way. It's a lot of front loaded context to skillfully communicate quickly. And then it quickly becomes irrelevant as the story moves away from it.

I was going to upload some screen shots of the stuff I put together. Pics or it didn't happen, right? But Pictures don't really do it justice. Video is a little better. But it's a pain to record a demo and upload. And then things don't work out like you want to on the first take, then you'd have to do it all over again.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-43sAPfnz-Y

Video starts out with some simple event demonstration. The torches turn on and off based on the player's Y coordinator. But it's coded in a way that I can copy & paste it without have to changed it's coordinate.

The buttons and Crystal have an event page that deactivates when the player stops touching them. I mostly just like watching switches decompress, rather than flip instantly on and off.

Note the Pony Walking sprite. That's utilizing my custom frame plugin I made a year or 2 ago. The walking sprite has 6 frames instead of the typical 3. It can be as many or as few as 1.

0:12 is a create Item skill. It creates a list of all the items in the database. When you select one a window prompt appears so you can key in an amount. Since the Window prompt is in a different window it wasn't recorded.

Most people might not know that you can use the \{ \} \v[] \i[] codes in item description boxes to change the font size, display a variable number or string, and display icon.

0:25 is the Change Map skill, makes a list of all the Map Names in the database and transfers the player. After transferring the player's blending mode is changed to additive and you can either walk through everything until you press "ok" or click somewhere on the screen to move to that tile and return to normal. I demonstrate again with the imp and an Item. Imo, I think it's got potential gameplay uses.

0:43 I walk into the swamp. It adds leeches to my equipment slots. I stole the idea from the game "Unepic". There's a little bug. It works once, and only once, and I have no idea why. edit:Ah, I need to add leech to the inventory first before force-equiping it.

0:45 I flip a switch, it generates random 4 possible event pages. Future application for a match 3 game or something.

1:05 Is some opacity experiments. Fading out character sprites is really annoying because it a fixed value by value, frame by frame. So I coded a remedy. The faerie fade in out out based on the player's distance from it.

1:20 demonstrates MV's Touch input. I can click on an event, it changes it page, I can drag it around, it changes back on release. I flip the switch to freeze the player's position. "Move player: towords Player" will lock the player's movement until another valid movement. When the player is locked like this the White Tile Highlighter is disabled. I can drag pictures around based on touch coordianate as well. Touch the player's position to do something.
I forgot I can also draw the event over to the player's position to do something. It would have erased the event with an explosion. But I forgot to record sound anyways - fail.
I made more picture touch events, but they're too adult for you to see. So you'll just have to use your imagination.

1:52 There's more off-camera window prompts. I key in a new item name, basically renaming it. Then I use another item to modify that items stats. Again with more window prompts. I only list Name and Icon id. I can change all the item properties: price, consumable ect... I can also do the same with a Blank Actor but the UI of just using the "Show Choices" window leaves something to be desired.

2:22 is a proof of concept thing. A Washing Machine! The idea is that you'd stick 2 items in and their properties "bleed" together. I just use simple number values as an example. It's a random process. It's possible an Item 2 might gain all of Item 1 value. Sometimes nothing happens. Sometimes they flip values. Anything inbetween. Eventual they're total value is even they'll split the difference. In which case you're washing "like colors" or whatever, they won't bleed together. Or maybe they could fuse. Idk. Whatever you want.

3:00 it doesn't look that special at first glace. But these 2 events are calling a common event to get directions based on the Region Id they are standing on. It's handy for a lot of things like traffic and large crowd dispersal. You just draw the paths out with Region id, and the common event does the rest.
m9mnpm5lx2kcm9b6g.jpg

Basically "3" steps forward, "11" turns left, "2" turns right. If they step on a "0" aka no region id,they step backwards and turn left or right. It's kinda fun to watch at high speed.

3:11 you blink you miss it. There's a cat, set to random movement. But it changes event pages to a dog and will follow the player while standing on region 4. In this case it went straight to the exit. Region 1, turning to blank event page.
w0w89v5xws7hhhj6g.jpg

3:18 you can't see what's going because it's displaying information in window alert.
Basically I created a hash with key:values for example {a:1, b:2}. I push the rock into region 4 and it adds {eventid: "rock"} to the hash. I push it out of region 4 and it deletes this key:value from the hash. Basically another proof of concept, combine this with the Move route designs to make an automated ant hill of sorts. In practice it wouldn't be a rock but an NPC with an Item that'll be added to the vender's stock upon arrival. Maybe they'll buy something too, so the store's inventory will be slowly changing.
Or maybe you could push a crate from one vender's stall to another, who'll sell it to you for a discount or something. The way I see it. Adventures bring in new stock, Thieves redistribute "trade" stock, Alchemist or Craft guilds consume stock. Idk. That's the theory anyways. But an actual economy like that would be as slow to change as the NPC can walk in and out.

I played some .hack//G.U. to study it's trade system and it's NPC behaviors. I gave it way too much credit. The NPCs just have a limited randomized inventory: Some number of potions, class specific armor, or weapon. And it never changes. I mean if you trade for their armor, they lose it but it'll be back the next time you zone in, even if you gave them better armor. It's your party members that have a semi-permanent inventory.
Also whenever you go to town there's only 12 or so npcs that haunt a town/server. They just kinda teleport within range. So if you run down a long street you might pass the same character twice or more.

I'm going to be mostly offline this weekend. So I might end up playing with my event systems some more. Or, if I find the strength, I'll attempt to write dialogue.

Kinda of inspired to make an add-on for MV's cyberspace tilesets. I had an idea to make a wireframe "crystal" to correspond with the default ones. But MV's perspectives aren't consistent, which I hate. The distortion of the crystals make them nearly side-view. An they kind of cheated on the silhouette. The wires on the backside seemed too busy. I was just going to do a neon glow but I'm going to play around with some different looks.

Edit:
Fiddled with it sporadically throughout the day. I like the look of this blue/green gradiant one. The catch is that the sprite has to be set to additive blending mode. But MV is dumb; you can't just set a sprite's blending mode from the start for some reason.

Been thinking about other things I can add on. There's not really any enemies to go with the cyberspace set either. There's some robot with the scifi stuff. I realized MV doesn't have any bugs or insects. That's a practical idea for cyberspace. Actual computer bugs. A little hue shift and the hexagons tiles become a honeycomb hive.
Oops, I was wrong. There's a hornet and spider Front view battler. There's just no walking sprites.

I feel like there should be some humanoid constructs or something that bridges fantasy to VR scifi. Just some names in my head: Phisher King. Parse-ival. From the Arthurian Legends? Parsifal and the Fisher King? Eh, I guess they're not A-list names like Lancelot. Maybe a different mythos? ROMulus. Something out of Tron of Megaman.exe, but I always worry about the narrative potential assets like this can hold. Scifi can be kind of abstract. MV has some weird machinery. Unique enough, I think, to be a McGuffin. Perpetual energy generator or something. But it doesn't have portals or platforms that the player can interact with.
It needs companion material. Like a mash-up of a Trojan solider/virus works for a one-off dungeon, but not recurrent. You could say the same with Fire and Ice dungeons too I guess. But arguably a fire demon or ice queen has enough agency to step out of their dominion and form a legion of doom. But an Artificial Rouge A.I. is more on-the-rails and doesn't have enough presence to fill an entire story around. It's more of a elemental phantom with an unknown nature, compared to the classical elements.

In other news. I wrote more introductory dialogue for my fan game. It has everything it needs but I'm still not satisfied with it. I'm not getting the impression that it's a character driven story.

That crystal looks really nice.

Sorry I've been so inactive, but as you may know already, been in the process of moving house. Everything I've done the past couple months can be found in this third devlog.

I'll make a full proper post later. I've been awake for 30 hours trying to work out bank switching so I haven't much energy left.

I recently hit 900 hours in MV according to Steam. Kind of amazing considering the majority of my time is spent in GIMP and Text Documents. I guess I do spend a lot of time playtesting for other people's games and collaborations.

I'm not sure, but that almost amounts to my FFXI playtime. And I only ever played that a few weeks out of the year during free campaigns.

God I've played a lot of RPGs.

Something I always thought about doing. MV's Minotaur looks so weird. Something about the nose was off. I just painted over it to try and improve it like I did with the Demon Lord's Ken Doll Anatomy way back when. I know, it's stupid and people will ask "But why?"
It's just a fun little exercise.

"But why?"
zuifttf6l64hve26g.jpg

So many design choices to approach from. I just started with a baby body and drew on top of it. I think the baby spirits idea was a dumb choice to begin with. I mean as a cherub/genius thing it's fine. But these are battlers. You fight them. You. Fight. Babies.
Anyways, since I made a digital crystal thing I figured there should also be a digital artificial spirit to go with it. A "Trojan Horse" virus wasn't my first idea. But it had more style than just a wireframe body or blocks. And I wanted to stay close to design choices of the other spirits. They're naked. Cloaked in their element. And have an "Eye" as part of their mask/mantel whatever. They're mostly monochromatic, so purple was my first choice. But MV already has a handful of enemies that are Green and Purple. But it kinda works.
My Wireframe crystal is green blue. So I dunno. I could try Neon Blue outlines. Or a Holographic Scan lines. Pixel square particles. Maybe virtual interface floaty wheel graphics. Idk. Idk. Idk. Too many choices.

Edit:
Idk. Idk. idk. My instincts says keep it simple. Something feels wrong. I don't know if you can mix and match metal and circuity with "virtual data". And it's kind of like inverted Tron thing, where normally they're in a skin suit with their head exposed; but this is a helmet and the body is exposed. It's weird.

Saw a request for a SV Battler of MV's Dragon. I wasn't planning on doing it, and I haven't responded to the thread yet. But a member there said something that put me in art rage mode. They disgust me so much the way they exploit the community like it one big commercial enterprise. Everything has to be capitalized on, include the gaps in the RTP. *spits gypsy curse* *cranks up Devils Never Cry*
Yearning more to hear the suffer (of a)
Of a demon as I put it under

I got this baby separated into layers. The wings, the feather ears, the legs, the retarded vine-jewely-thorn whatsit. Work smart not hard. I know if I do this people are going to want modifications. It also lends itself to cheap puppetry animation.
It's all sketched out. I got arms drawn for different skill use poses. But problems came up when I started experimenting with animating it and testing it out in the editor. Because of course MV designed it's SV system to be compatible with it's SV battlers only. Even though you can have any frame size, it also places a shadow under it which is not one-size-fits-all. I might be able to make a chibi version fit. But I think a 3rd Party Plug-in will be necessary. At which point I have decisions to consider. At a minimum I just remove or scale the shadow. What a worthless plug-in that would be. Why restrict myself to the 3 frame animations? I could format my own animation sheet. I could make a respectable wing flap and fly-away animation, a whipping tail round house attack. I can make it G L O R I O U S!

but...that's also a lot of work and my enthusiasm for this side project is waning. Not to mention memorial weekend is right around the corner. It's scripted to halt any forward momentum. A cruel cycle I was slow to learn from.

Alrighty, got a big bunch of stuff done so here's to showing~!

Remi-chan / Biz
So i have been hyperfocused on trimming down dialogue and fixing up inconsistencies in player and character knowledge, like now that less is said less is assumed known. It's a careful balance and somedays i've been having big mental crashes but over all It's been going smoothly.

Of visible things i can show you, is some more good news. Koko and Lilac now have an extra set of eight animated busts, bringing them from 16 up to 24 alongside Lumi. Obviously I'm not going to showcase them all here, so in spoilers is some screenshots, for this public post here is the face grid.

She has not had net that is good for sending me files, but she is currently working on Nanianne before Remira due to loving a challenge. She of the sprites has finished Renae, Cathy, Lily and Zephyrra. She's also done logowork and some other stuff I've gone into before.

Pjcr
As you saw in my last big detailed post, Renae is done, so today I am glad to inform you that PJcr has gotten me all of the Cathy! I have implemented her and her body language is to die for~

He's done a bunch of tracks, four in total since my last big showcase post.

So yeah he's on fire with productivity lately!

Think that's all? Hope you all had a great Easter and remember to stay safe~!

When I think dialogue is meandering it's because it doesn't feel meaningful for the story.
Actually, no, I can rationalize that it's doing something. Characterization, World Building, Conflict...ect. I think the problem is trying to do it all at once. Ideally you want to kill 2 birds with 1 stone. But maybe that's the limit and 3 or more with 1 stone, one scene, is just too much.
I always worry breaking up a scene will create pacing issues. Especially at the start of the game. You can give the player control but will there be anything for them to do yet? And will it accidentally frame the story in a different direction?

So I have a little gameplay clip to show on my undisclosed game. Let me know what you think. Mainly showing the Atmostphere and game mechanics thus far.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00H-qXkY1o0

Let me know your thoughts.

PS. Not sure why the embedding isn't working sorry.

for the youtube tag you got to change https to just http.

I'm thinking you need a floating UI wherever you click. It's kind of annoying to have to move the mouse to the left of the screen all the time. I might actually work on developing something like that tomorrow.
It would also alleviate eye fatigue. I mean it depends on people's viewing distance, but potentially moving your eye's from the center of the screen to the edge, repeatedly, could be exhausting and misinterpreted as a sense of boredom.

Alternatively, if you could just display the "examine" text as you hoover a mouse over an event, or stand facing next to it, you could eliminate the need for a choice box.
