What are you working on? (Game Making Thread)

So basically I wanted a project I can just tinker with. Won't ever be released (probably), I just want to have some fun.

Using FFVII pre-rendered scenes taken from Final Fantasy Wikia, for example: https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Sector_7

Using some characters Pineda made and will make some of my own to compliment.

Basically at the moment I'm trying to faithfully recreate the FFVII systems in RPG Maker. Not to the same extent as Dargor's FFVI kit mind.

At the minute all I've really implemented are pixel movement, collision maps, the FFVII menu, materia, the title screen, music, splash screens, etc.

Going to set up a nice side view battle system which will be a little basic, but I'll throw in things such as:

- Camera movement
- Limit break system matching the original
- Summons
- Materia obviously

Once I actually get somewhere with this lot, the plan is vaguelly to recreate FFVII from the perspective of the Turks, but with the premise that these guys think they are the good guys. So not quite a lampshade or whatever you want to call it, but a complete role reversal. You play as these big bad guys but are never told they're the bad guys. And after all, you begin by tracking down terrorists who in your mind just killed thousands of people, so why wouldn't you?

Not a prequel, it's not events beforehand, that's been done before. Rather this is events going on simultaneously. So I want to see for example the fight that ends with Tseng getting slain at the Temple of the Ancients, the events in the background with Tseng, and the rumours that Rufus Shinra is actually AVALANCHE's financier.

I'm not in any way suggesting I'll accomplish any of this, I just want to tinker with something for the time being. It's fun.

Here's my battle system so far, using DoubleX's battle system and just hacking and slashing.

In comparison:

I spent a while looking into doing a 3D camera in an MV battle system, used WebGL and my Canvas 3D renderer. I don't suggest you pursue that route, but you should implement a zoom effect

Zooms will be good.

Materia system progress. Base system by Victor Sant. Had to edit it to work with the arrow cursor, and had to implement the actual materia.

April is spilling over into May. I don't know where the last 2 weeks went.

In my head I was recallin the story I was writing for Perseverance. It was going to be a head trip like Alice in Wonderland. At first I started thinking I forgot a character motive. The old writing advice says passive protagonists are a bad thing. But I think in this genre it's acceptable. Alice, for example, just moves from one curiosity to the next, chasing the rabbit with nothing at stake.
I hadn't thought about it before. Alice's adventure were episodic too. The movie/games adaptions cut out most of it and wove it with an insane asylum or wedding proposal as a framin device. The Oz movies do that too.
In this case, there's nothing really ordinary about the world of perseverance to mirror or reverse. To make fantastical. It already has talking animals and demons.
Ar Tonelico has always been a source of inspiration. It has similar short head trips, but it's someone else's head with an outside POV.
So I'm worried Ive got a structure problem, making Sven the POV inside his own head.

I must admit, it did strike me as a little odd, considering the dream world of Sven would be hard to make more of a trip than his own reality he wakes on through- but you seemed to know what you were doing and I was so speechless at the mere thought of someone creating a fangame of my game that I couldn't find any words to put my reasoning into phrase.

The alternative is to make it as realistic and gritty as possible, with red painted cats that don't talk and just meow, that would juxtapose absurdity with our own established reality.

Though it would be far harder to process art wise, but that's just one idea.

Speaking of Red Cats, the furball of chaos has his first theme made for Fantasia! But for now I've some else to quickly show.

I have at last found a voice Actor for Tristy!
https://twitter.com/BizarreMonkey/status/1123523621647859712
Links to a twitter vid with her voice in audible motion. VA supplied by my dear friend Portia, who like Tristy, is a tragic hermit-esque character with some native blood in her. It probably could not have been a more apt fit.

Starship YHWH has a theme.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Qs1HEC4Q7w
One of the most homely feeling Starships is now under the influence of its own very atmospheric and chill theme.

Pep has a character theme.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OcDJiQsSag
Great thing about having Jake back, he's already made a stellar and recognizable theme for this crazy cat, and both in PFC and Intel his themes have had influence, now at last the culimination of all those efforts!

I've also been implementing much of the optional event ideas I've had, and more are likely to come.

I consulted the I Ching about the story I was writing. I've heard it's a useful tool for writer's block. The hexagrams are written in a way that seem to make sense in any context. In fact, some people say the 64 hexagrams are the fundamental building blocks of meaning. So any and all the hexagrams are valid possibilities in any situation.

But it's kinda freaky. I asked "what's my story about" and got a hexagram for Determination and Persistence. Ok, yeah, duh, it's called Perseverance. Tell me something I don't know!
So then I asked about the Beginning, Middle, And End. And it basically spelled how how most stories unfold.
It's nice to just flip a coin to make a decision for you. But this just seems to be reaffirming what I already know or had planned. Or I'm just biased in my interpretations. Who knows?

On a semi-related note, Xiie is working on Sven's sprite.

Haven't had much time to dev until now due to a hectic performance and rehearsal schedule, but now thats cleared up so time should become more malleable for me.

Although I have been working on a secret final cutscene for the End of Disk One for Fantasia. it's essentially a Yi monologue. I'll just show a few screenshots from it for now... as its not near ready for public consumption.

So yeah look forward to that I guess, lmao.

I had a dream Monkey somehow got a big shot actor (looked like angus macfadyen) to voice a villain. There was even a musical number. I was like, wow, these lyrics are awful but somehow the guy makes it work.

The song was basically spelling out his eeevil plan to drain the blood from the Cookiedoe cat family. I guess he was a vampire, idk.

That last part hits home, because a lot of my ideas are pretty awful but I'm just too comitted to not make them work.

Making action-packed shooters in RPGmaker being just one of the stupid and awful ideas I've had that I've basically made work.

Funnily I had some intense day dreams about my games as well-rendered high budget movies so we mighta been on the same kinda wavelink.

Just a male version of Esperia I guess, lmao.

If I did get Angus Mcfaygo he'd suit Saxxis to a T, seeing as Saxxis is Scottish by birth and his cat breed is a Scottish fold and he has a similar temperament. That is of course if Stephen Rea didn't offer first. (Saxxis takes a lot of inspiration from Eric Finch from the V for Vendetta movie, Perseverance as a whole takes some cues from that movie. The symbology in particular, just with many more unsettling supernatural tones. Naxon Viddigus is High Chancellor Adam Sutler, Esperia is fairly close to Peter Creaddy, The Sty is the Scotland Yard, The Heartwood is Lark Hill, though that ones a bit of a stretch...

I mean this is all you really need to see it beyond the shadow of a doubt anyway...

Alrighty, as for what I've been working on? More optional events, as well as getting a good 2 minutes and 15 seconds more footage done on FS11, bringing it to a total of three minutes and five seconds, a large upgrade over its previous 50 second length. Now we're almost halfway kinda!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJsG4PC17u0
Not all of Tristy's VA is done yet, but I do have a voice actor for her now. Now I just need a Lyza and a replacement for Sacreblu. I've pestered the voice actor for Esperia to do some lines for FS11, she hasn't gotten back to me yet, but I know she's pretty busy so no immense rush.

We also got a new track of music that is fucking EPIC.

And now I go back to working on game stuff, woo!

Edit--Back from working on game stuff, now a boss fight is finished.

There was a disposition I had with the lag from the picture events in DENUI Damnation animations, the solution was simply to make a short and sweet video clip instead~

I will be removing the recovery se from Rolly's move route so that will be less confusing when green lasers get involved.

I'm going to buy a new laptop this week. Lol, keep putting it off. It's weird, my old laptop hadn't given me any problems the last 2 weeks, now all of a sudden it won't stay on.
So development wise, I'm still trapped in my head. Listening to podcasts on my phone just to stay in a frame of mind.
Writing out to-do lists, but it feels bad. It's like being in college again, where all I did was make plans and nothing came together.

working on my own website atm

not a game i know but either way its something im working on

now im doing wo͚͉ͅŕ̘̪̲̟̫k stuff at ho̩̣̥̘̺͝m̨͈̲e as ̯̞̦̣͟we̗̯̼ll̙͟

Got another boss fight finished, leaving just one more for the main story for Disk One.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blu2EuWor5E
The remaining one is Tristy Heals, she alike Kara, Pep and Svoli will have two phases in her boss fight.

Also, I recorded a bunch of the cute character interaction scenes. There's loads more to be found, but these are just some I had stable recordings of and that I could attempt Voice Acting for.

And one of the songs in the OST got an album art update.

That's about it for now~

Ordered a New Laptop. ~Progress~
Unless it gets here in 2 days, which is very doubtful, I won't be around because of travel plans. So it'll be 2 weeks before I touch it. Unless my parents change their plans and deliver it to me next week.

oh, I might actually get my laptop tomorrow. It's shipping from one state over.
The next hassle will be transferring all my data over. Dunno how well that'll go over.

Edit: Also it's probably the warming weather; I feel that calling to make resources for RPG Maker. But the sense of an rpgm community has never felt deader to me.

~woooo woooooo~ :boo: the spirits are telling you to consider making 16x16 pixel resources for MV

I got affine sprites working, combined with 3D projection:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GoBDeeEWpPA

Considering writing an RPG Maker style Sprite class to handle groups of objects like this - that GBA sprite is made up of two hardware objects next to each other, right now the positioning is hard-coded but it might be smarter to have a manager class handle it. Will definitely do this for the RPG engine, but I am thinking about just how high level I should be going for this C++ library.

I also need to deal with audio sooner rather than later. And file systems. And ELF loading (which works but needs polishing up).

Ok. I think I'm back in buisness.
Had a scare with my art programs. Both Gimp and Paint were slow. The brush wouldn't keep up with the mouse. I'd scribble all over the screen but it wouldn't render anything until I left off. So it wasn't usable at all. I messed with Resource Settings. Updated drivers. Nothing was working.
But the Sketchpad app worked fine. So I was like, what is going on?

I think what fixed it was Installing the Windows DirectPlay feature. Good to know.

And here I am still using good ol' reliable Win7 with no hitches.

I haven't begun on Tristy's battle because it's gonna be pretty complex and I need to work out what she'll do other than create spacial gaps. What I have been preparing are assets for the Arena, alike in the fight with Svoli, she'll have a moving background with a stationary platform where you fight her, the difference being that the platform is hoisted by an event, and the reason for this is so that I can move it if I want.

Preview of this in its thread-bare state.

Had two music tracks completed recently.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2bas_0glVQhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10kJnqHN7I0
One is the battle theme for when Pep goes into his cherubim form, the other is a storytelling theme, and also a character theme for the ENNUI and ... someone else.

And just some silly dialogue / flavor text. This will be the trend EVERYWHERE sooner or later.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8lQnam2oF4

UPDATE while formulating post, i got sidetracked and borderline finished this thing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hS0g-wQQuc
At last the 7 minute plus cutscene is done, wew...

Downside is I accidentally saved over FS12 (ESCHATON) in the epic moment of deep-dev so... darn! D;

Also yes I went into safe-mode to render this, given that JUST the first 3 minutes required that... I didn't bother taking chances.
