I understand where your coming from with the too dark comments, I need to adjust the lighting slightly too give the objects more definition. It's actually 3D too but clearly way too dark if that's not coming across.

It's more a case of "adding any definition at all". It is so dark I cannot see anything unless I move my head very close to the monitor. I am sure that is not the effect you are going for. Perhaps it is just my monitor (or yours) though.

I can see it on my monitor fine. It looks okay, albeit too dark if others can't even see the trees. Keep in mind that in the wilderness, moonlight is often a good light source. Try integrating some of those cool blue tones, while upping the brightness a bit. You don't have to necessarily blind the player to get the atmosphere you're looking for. Be sure to post an update when you toy around with it, what you already have looks interesting.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I appriciate it. I've had a little fiddle with the lighting on the level and added a more blue/cold tone to it while increasing the intensity ever so slightly, the fog is in place still which might make the view distance rather short but the immediate view atleast from what I can see has been improved (can actually see the textures a little now). Was just a very quick edit, I'm back coding today so won't be playing with the scene as much until I've got more of the code done. Heres the quick updated product though.

When shooting dark scenes in movies, there are normally three light points - the most important being the backlight which gives definition to objects. I think, as Ace said, you could try and use the moonlight as this backlight - just a dim, cool, bluey gray tone in the back highlighting the edges of the trees and such. I'm not sure how you could do that in your application, but it's something to consider.

Of course, as with all 3D games, these things look a lot different in reality while playing the game than they do in a single screen capture. Just moving the camera a short distance helps show all the objects in the area which is hard to do in a screenshot.

Adding the extra lights would be simple enough, I think a lot of the problem of darkness is coming from the fog I've applied its a bit too thick which is reducing the lighting effects dramatically, this is something I'll change. When I next play around with the scene I'll give your idea of multiple light sources a try, I'm aiming to have my day and night cycle coded and inplace by the next screenshot(s) I post so the feedback on the night time lighting here has helped a lot in how I'll set the lighting for that.

I would remove the saturated green grass and just use the regular grass i think it would look better.

Also that light beige dirt patch really stands out. I think i again might be better if you just used the one type of dirt.

With that being said i have to say that i absolutely love how you changed the palettes in the trees to match and have for the most part a concise and uniform color palette it really makes the map and i think this is some great, great mapping and it looks really cool.

A new game in progress called Xaan. Dreamwalker and SOLDIER is on hold for the moment, even though they are barely near the demo stage. SOLDIER is. I just need to fix alot, because it's like I'm missing some plot points on where to go and all.

You made those graphics? Sweet mother of hell that is fantastic! You could easily charge good money for a game that professionally and well made. It is beautiful. Finish it!

Yeah that's, well, amazing, so detailed and well thought out. Easily good enough to release. You should just work it out as a short game and then update it later! There's nothing more uplifting than getting your game finally out there after so long. At least, that's how I felt with my game, which I scaled down a lot.

Yeah, right now I'm not looking too far past releasing the first dungeon. The plot is gonna make zero sense without the rest of the game, but it will amuse me, so whatever. There's a lot to do, like learning Game Maker, but the gameplay isn't that complicated. Basically it's sort of like the GB Zeldas except you control two people at once. Which is funny because the original reason for that gimmick went away for the sake of simplifying the plot, but I think it's still interesting, so I'm gonna keep it.

Currently I'm planning on releasing in chapters. If I actually finish the whole thing (which will take an act of God) and it doesn't suck, I might think about adding some extra content and selling it, but it'll be free up until that point.

I might make a project thread soon just so this forum has more activity, but I think I wanna make another mockup or two first and get a little farther in my planning process.

Also, thanks for the compliments! Man, it took me so long to figure out what kind of tiles I wanted to make. Exteriors are gonna suck. I still don't have a good idea of what to do there yet.

Look's damn amazing! I like this style, really!
Good job! This style reminds me of the older GBA games wich I like a lot. It is great how you made that science fiction.
That robotic woman face below in the center reminds me of an old game. I'm not sure wich one it was. I only know it was an shooter.
Indeed, if you continue like this you could sell some of your work. =D

Thanks, everyone! I have a project thread now, so feel free to check it out.

@ Action Johansen: Yeah, I agree. I try for simplicity in my designs unless I'm going for an effect. Like the HUD frame was supposed to be kind of bulky and retro-feeling.
