Not bad at all. Do you plan to include these sketches in the actual game somehow - like the menu - or just have them as a bonus in the directory?

I remember seeing a screen with a more polished version used for your dialogue...

The Sprite was Made by ISTVAN, from a pixel artists' community, quite the pro too, may I add.
And the Character art is made by ihori Mangetsu.

There is going to be character art appearing on the menus, but it'll be fninished Versions.
these sketches will be put probably as bonus.

Realy nice stuff, but I'm not a fan of the design. The guy's showing more belly than the chick. Either his ass is really sore in the mornings or you've gotta rethink things.

Actually, Despain, it's more like a lycra singlet, which is commonly used by men in sports. and a high amount of them DO show the belly.
just google "lycra singlet" and you're bound to find samples.

It might be real, but that doesn't mean it doesn't look gay (note that being gay and looking gay are different- I have nothing against gay people but I hate people who look like they're trying too hard to show it off).

Then again, you're not from America, right? It might just be cultural differences.

Doesn't look odd to me at all. Seen plenty of anime characters & video game characters from Japan wearing such clothing who weren't gay. *shrug* It's probably a personal difference.

I'm still fiddling with learning to do textures and all. I try to imitate cliffs that I see used elsewhere and learn what logic they use, but often enough the logic is very difficult to find. I only realized last night that a lot of textures are done like impressionist paintings - all about the illusion, not about the line art at all, things are just shaded in directly instead. Or something. It depends. The lack of information on creating 2d textures with pixel art out there really bites (besides grass and bricks).

On top left, attempt to mimic chronotrigger cliffs and understand them. Didn't go so well. Using more colors only made it look worse. The logic behind how rocky protrusions were shaped I just didn't get.

Bottom left, attempts to create something that would tile nicer. More depth (and shadows etc obviously, and variation all would be done later, this was mucking with the basic stuff) is required, maybe darker colors somewhere... I'm using the wrong colors as well probably, have poor grasp of that... and I really still don't know the first thing about actually creating textures in there beyond some basic shading for light and all.

On the bottom right fiddling with smaller, distinct chunky rock pieces. The top looked nice enough, except a little too much like it was man made... but shading could fix that up and more rocks in perhaps. Problem is the vertical tiling process - really not sure what sorts of outlining to be used there. Straight lines like in the other cliff? Doesn't really look natural.

Tiling really makes variation on the basic tiles rather difficult to squeeze in there, takes a lot of fiddling.

Anyway. Just a little bit of the tileset I'm working on.

Well that's the problem right there.

Scrib your handmade attempt is so much better looking than the rip its insane. Stick with doing it by hand, you have talent.

midnight, edge cliff piece near road is mismatched. should be a corner piece instead of central cliff piece. also your shadows need to be set to transparent when you import the tileset, to stop them being purple under trees. i'd scatter a little more dark grass autotile to give place variation.

and ryan... thank you :) but it's not talent, it's just keeping at it and learning since i joined here a couple months ago, it's hardly good enough yet. Which part were you referring to, anyway? The chronotrigger style imitation or the other?

It'd be nice if that artist at lostgarden.com whose work bluescape posted wrote tutes on texturing... his cliffs were truly amazing, albeit not tileable quite the same, and using way more colors.

Midnight. Everything wrong with your pic has already been said and aside from the few problems it's real nice.
Scribblette. That is awsome work. I really like your 'recent attempt' cliff. If these are your crapworks in progress I can't wait till you post something you yourself like.

You need to pick a direction for shadows (flower pot is down, house wall is sideways. x_x)

Also you need some sort of shadow/connection or something between the roof and the front of the house. I'd also suggest a few tiles that make the boards on the roof connect, so it doesn't look like its made with just one blank per length (as that would rarely be the case.)
