The first map does a good job of showing how the light sort of gradually diffuses through the room, but why is the sun shining directly into the windows on both sides of the building?

The second one has the shadows looking pretty nice, far as I can tell, but things get a little awkward when they get to the cliffs -- the light hits them like they don't rise from the ground at all, and they don't cast shadows of their own once they get out of the dark.

thanks for the crits,

the maps themselves are still a work in progress. The second picture was taken at one part of the map that best portrayed the shading effect, though it was one of the most sparse parts of the map. I also noticed the uneven shadowing near the cliff after posting, and I've only gotten to the building shadows. I haven't worked on the terrain shadows or doodads I've placed around (barrels, boxes, canopies etc)

As for the first pic, you're right about the light coming from both sides >> I'll have to fix it.

@Seita:
I really like it. The lighting isn't obnoxiously heavy, and seems to add just the right touch. I especially like the layered effect of the lights from the windows in the first one. That's going to be a lot of work to do them for all the exterior maps too, though - Good luck with that. The glitches I found were already mentioned. As for the second map, for some reason I actually found it to be okay as far as emptiness goes; it just feels like a nice natural wide road in a town. Which is what places in real life looks like, a lot of plain areas - but it doesn't seem dull because there is light and shadow; which is partly what happened there. c:

I thought I'd follow Skiefortress back over to ye good ol' RMXP.org!!
I'm pretty much spamming this on most of the larger communities to
get feedback before I dive into the harder aspects of the CBS.

I saw this and was reminded of "Legend of the Philosopher's Stone". Same font, same "window" colour, same chipset, same sprite style. :eek:
I'm developing a CBS myself in RM2k3. I would show it (and the game) here sometime but I dunno if the illegally translated RMs are really respected here. :\

Some people have said the graphics are slightly inconsistant, but I think they blend together quite well. At least, they do when you're playing.

I agree with Despain, those turtles, the trees and the buildings look weird with the rtp/one of Despain's templates. And unless your character is floating, there is no way he can have shadows starting from behind him and then go past him again. The layout is nice, but the graphical inconsistencies are killing it.

Tell zanyzora that the graphics are inconsistant then. The houses are his/hers, and the trees come with the same tileset. There is also the problem that there are no other modern tilesets out there, and I can't sprite from scratch.

Zanyzora's graphics ARE inconsistent. I never use of stuff from that site for that very reason.

I have told her, multiple times, and I think it's one of the reasons she left these forums.

Telling them won't do anything.  I doubt they care.  What does matter if YOU use them.  Don't blame the person who compiled the tileset, blame yourself for using them.  And, yeah, you should not use those.  They aren't the best looking by any stretch of the imagination.  You may be better of learning to sprite yourself.
