The Healer

I took your suggestion and changed demo to teaser. Hey, I did say it was very short in a previous post. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I don't have any plans right now to continue All is Not Lost. That was my first rmxp project and I made up the story as I made each map. With The Healer, parts of the story continually play in my head, and with every new scene, my excitement for the project grows. Hopefully I'll be able to see this project through to the end. Hey, I even know how it's going to end. I'm being realistic and I realize that this project will take a long time to complete.

So far, I have only created 2 maps. Part of the village and the interior. Right now I've been working on some cutscenes and I have plans to make the next map.

Sorry the demo/teaser was so short. I've extended the teaser with a few new scenes and some minor exploration. I will release my next actual demo when I have completed the first dungeon and some other important scenes.

DEMO updated!

Enjoy! Also, please do not post just to tell me that you are downloading the demo. However, once you've played the demo, I would love to get your feedback. I will be tweaking the battles and stats so don't tell me that the enemies are too strong. I just realized that, myself, and that will be adjusted for the next demo. Still, the enemies can be defeated or you could just escape.

Downloading now....

Just kidding, but the demo is still short since the dungeon for some reason still says under construction.Did you forget to do something ?

What? I tested it and you should have access to the dungeon. Check for an edit soon.

Wait a minute. Do you know where the dungeon is located? It's hidden behind a tree near the entrance.

Well I finished the demo, still wanting to play more...I really love your work and the fact that you gave up on All is Not Lost makes me wonder if you will stay with this. Please keep your promise you will finish it and now for the feedback.

Their is a bug on the right side of the mountain area where the cave entrance is on some parts you can walk up there.

The maps are beautiful and so are the tilesets and as usual you use very original outlines in your game like the spiderweb trick that's a great feature.

Well I don't know what else to say since it was kind of a short demo, but good luck with the game because it's promising.:thumb:

I'm glad you enjoyed it. The main difference between this project and All is Not Lost, is that I'm much more invested in this project than the latter. I'm also being realistic about this project and am going into it with the understanding that it will take a long time.

I was able to find the mapping error on the cliff. Thanks for pointing that out.

I'm glad that you like the spider web idea. I'm just not sure what to do about my other enemies. I HATE random battles with a passion, yet I feel very limited with the rtp monster charsets. I'll have to figure out other ways of representing enemies on the map. They can't all be spiders.

Yeah, I hate random battles two I have to find a way to make mines different.

Also if you need help with that you can using like trap pots or dark spores...even flowers that attracts bugs and when you touch them you get into a battle...

This project is very nice :D
You're good mapper and yours recolours are fantastic. And the spiderweb is good idea. So I wish you to make a good full game.

Pretty good demo! :) I liked everything about it. Mapping rules, the HUD is slick, although you could have included a couple bookshelves to illustrate getting Xp through reading things.

The Quest thing is neat, yes, but I was expecting to see more of a description when I read the Journal.

And I do agree, it is rather short.

I was about to ask about the old man's glasses until I saw someone ask the same thing. ;)

It makes me look forward to seeing more of the game play -- are they going to learn skills at level up, or through events/scripting? I know neither had any skills in or out of battle in the demo, and I found that slightly strange since she had healing magic. But from what I've seen in the posts above -- I guess you're going to be using that magic more into story-related things than in battles?

Download access forbidden. :[
Wait a day or two and I'll upload it to Megauload instead of File Front. Hopefully that'll work. I probably won't post a reply when I do that, so just check the first post and see when it was last updated.

@Gryphbear - I will add bookshelves later, but you wouldn't be able to earn xp until you received/found a wisdom stone. I haven't figured out how I'm going to introduce the wisdom stone, yet. If you're curious about how it works, play All is Not Lost, which has the same feature.

As for the quest thing, I would need a script for that and right now, that's not the most important thing to me. But if any scripters out there are interested in creating a quest log script for me, let me know. I still need to browse existing scripts, though, to see if any of them would fit my needs.

In the final project, Aria will start out with a light healing skill. She will be the only member of the party who can heal. I haven't figured out how I want to do this yet, and this may require a script, but there are two things I can do.

1. Set it up so that when Aria heals others, she loses some of her own hp and then when she heals herself, all other party members lose some of their hp.

OR

2. Have light healing skills with no negative effects, but also have heavier spells in which Aria loses hp.

Was the dungeon puzzle too easy? I expected to get some questions about it, but I guess everyone was able to figure it out. Oh, well.

The dungeon was easy once I figured out the statues. My question is: Are the offerings even important or necessary? It was also pretty straightforward, and not too convoluted, which is a bonus.

And as for 'too easy'... It was simple, yes, but that should be the case for any beginner starting the game, actually. I did like your spider-webs -- since some of them I just HAD to plow through since there wasn't enough room to navigate around 'em. So it's a handy feature to combat enemies.

Hmm. Wisdom Stones. Will each character get one single stone for each character? (like a permanant wisdom stone, or are they going to be more than one?) Hope this question is non-spoiler enough. If you can't answer this, that's ok. :)

Anyways, I love the demo :)

The offerings are important for the puzzle. If you don't offer the correct item, the statues will turn back to their original position and the door won't open.

The wisdom stone will allow all party members to gain exp and is a permanent item that cannot be sold. And as you progress through the game, you will be able to gain more exp from reading than before. I'll also reward those who are vigilant enough to read every book.
