First RPG was Shining Force. Up to that point, it was all about Sierra adventure games. I was 8. I had no freaking clue what the hell was going on. Why was it so boring? Why could I only move 1 space at at a time? Why couldn't I just get a mushroom or ring power-up and stomp on the bad guys?
Obviously, I didn't "get it". It was too boring and confusing. I had only ever played action/platformers, and this was entirely different. From then (for years and years) on I figured all RPG's were like that, all the way up until Final Fantasy IX (still my fave FF). I played it sheerly out of boredom because it's all my friend would lend me. Then I fell. In. Love. After that, I played FFVII. I remember that I wasn't terribly impressed with it, but it wasn't BAD. Then I played Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger (yes, in that order, unfortunately), and that was it, I was deeply enamored with RPGs from hence force.
A few years ago I started hating them again, mostly only because they can't seem to shake the same fundamentals I saw in the early days of RPG making. So I took up shooters and action
Only recently, with the inception of Western RPGs (KOTOR, Fallout), have I been able to get back fully into the RPG "deal". I just want me some excitement and story! You can't get that by grinding 50 hours solid.
