Tales of...

I recently got Tales of Legendia, which is ok, but doesn't live up to Phantasia or Symphonia. So...I was thinking, what's your favorite "Tales of" game and why?

I'm really getting tired of the Tales games. They were great once upon a time but now with these 30 million sequels and rereleases I'm getting very bored. Tales of Phantasia was unique during their time but every other tales game that has come out including the GBA spinoffs has become incredibly stale and usually doesn't introduce any new features at all; quite opposed to Final Fantasy which, even though I think needs to be retired as a "broken series" has introduced new elements with each game.

My favorite would probably be Symphonia. It's the most "by-the-books" of them all but it's one of the few JRPGs that doesn't try to be this pretentious SUPER EPIC GODSLAYING STORY and simply says "you're the chosen one, save the world, explore cool locales along the way." It was basically a fairy tale that didn't take itself seriously... which more games should realize these days. I'm all for serious games, but if you can't hire decent writers then don't try to come off sounding serious.

Symphonia also featured some interesting characters like that monk who kept his hands shackled. It was also one of the longer games I've played (about 80 hours). Only other non American/European RPG I spent that much time with was Dragon Quest VII (140 hours MY GOD) and Dragon Quest VIII (80 hours).

Tales of Symphonia. Only ~40 hour game that I've beaten more than 3 times.

One of the main reasons it's my favourite is the battle system. I feel that it's the best in the series thus far. The cell-shaded graphics were great, and aside from Collette, the voice acting was above average(Scott Menvell > All other male voice actors).

The storyline was also pretty good, until it started driving 'Stop discrimination!' into your skull.

Well, Legendia is ok. Not great and all, some of the characters were unique (Jay, Moses, Chloe, Will), while others were generic (Senel, Shirley, Norma). The gameplay was Phantasia on full Manual, and a Climax system which was ok, but makes things over easy. All in all, it's medium. My favorite would probably be Phantasia. You didn't have like, 20 characters to work with, it was the same four (After Chester goes "poof") characters throughout. Cress, Mint, Klarth, and that one witch. Symphonia was awsome, and I liked how the main healer wasn't a damsel in distress, nor a wimpy guy. On the bad side, Kratos was a bit stereotypical, but not by much. All in all, it's my second favorite.

Tales of Symphonia took me 55 hours, but I did do all the sidequests and got all the extras. It's definately the best game in the Tales series. Sure, it starts out "by the books", but it really does change into something way different by disk 2.

Tales of the Abyss comes out in October (I think), and it introduces the Free-Run system, which enables you to run anywhere on the field just like in Star Ocean 3. It's the favourite tales game of many people so I can't wait for it's release.

Tales of Symphonia! I loved the characters, the story was nice, the battle system was the BEST out of the Tales series... and well, I just couldnt stop playing it! Beautiful game. And i love long games ^^ at least the first time through it is.

Tales of Legendia SUCKED. The only thing i liked in it was the music. The battle system was shit and the characters were horrible! I just didnt like the game at all ><

The rest of the tales series i enjoyed. Especially Tales of Phantasia. Except the remake on the gameboy. That just sucked... i dont know, i just didnt enjoy the battle system as much.

Tales of... series is one of my all time favorite series ever! Its battle system is one of my fav ^^ except Legendia's...

....ToS is NOTHING like FF10. And Legendia's battle system was a throw back to Phantasia's, but on Manual, which in my mind, is a win. Though I agree that most of the characters were plain, they each were different in one way or another.

Yes I have. My hours on FF10:162. ToS:136. I've played through FF10 about 6 times and ToS 8 times. FF10 is NOTHING like Symphonia. While both stories were good, Symphonia's was WAY better. And most of the character's were far from the average RPG build.

I think TOS is the best RPG to come out on the current era of consoles. The only one that has really drawn me into the world where it was set. FFX did this quite wel too, but there was just something msiing in it. Though in Europe we tend to misss out on most rpg's or get them like 18 months late, so there may be others I don't know. I'm trying to get into Dragon Quest and it's good, though I can't quite see what the big deal is yet, perhaps I'm not far enough into the game.

I loved Tales of Symphonia, thought it was one of the best RPGs on the Game Cube... I thought Tales of Legendia was decent but not as good as past games (since it was made by a group other then the normal Tales Production group. Tales of Abyss might be as good as Tales of Symphonia so can't wait for that.

I have only ever played Tales of Eternia(PSP Version) And I love it, the world of the game is a very interesting place, graphics are good, story too as it has a good twist in it. The good thing about Tales Of games is that they always have good logic behind their story. Tales Of Eternia is a good game that any PSP owner should have.

I would agree that ToP is great because it started it all, but it's not my favorite. I haven't played ToS or ToL or ToR, but I would say ToE(ToD2 here) is my favorite, with ToA being really freaking close.

But I really don't like the To... games as a series, because all it really is is Namco's experimental series, just like what FF is becomeing to Squeenix.

Wow, so you CAN get to level 250! I was going through ToE's manual, and I noticed their character levels were 255 or something. But I have never gotten to level 100 in a tales game so I never knew if it TRULLY went higher.

I have 1600 grade right now. I just need 400 more and to beat the game and i can get the 10x EXP. I just wish there was a faster way to get Grade >< for some reason, i cant really get more than 3 grade per battle. I started off getting 6 grade per battle, but after a while it only gave me 3 @_@

I keep hearing about ToE on the PSP. Is it out yet in America? Or are people just playing an import or something?

I also hear that Tales of Destiny 2(the REAL sequal to ToD) and Tales of Phantasia are coming to PSP. I also read something about a Tales of Destiny remake for the PS2. It isnt known if they are coming to america yet or not. Just thought some people would be interested with that~

Anyways! Totally off topic, excuse me.
