Ever since a friend told me that Spore was announced the day before I have been waiting to finally play it. Years afterwards and countless delays later today I was finally able to install what I was hoping to be the masterpiece of gaming.
I tossed in the DVD and the first thing he told me before installing was that I had to deinstall Spore-Labor... man am I glad I only played the demo version.
After installing I started the game and watched the very nice opening sequence. Than I was greeted by the same music I was already knowing from Spore-Labor. The main meu comes up in form of a little galaxy. There you get six planets to choose from where you can start a new game.
You can also choose to go directly to the editors and start planning stuff for your world.
So I chose a planet that looked a bit like earth. Now the game wants me to set things. First we must tell it which phase to start in. Since I haven't played it yet I can only choose the first one, but judging from the looks of it and the booklet once i played another one in game I can choose this one as a start as well.
Next comes if i want a carnivore or herbivore. For start I chose to be a carnivore.
Then comes the difficulty. You can chose between easy, normal and hard. I am a beginner so I chose easy.
Last comes the name of your planet. Man I suck with names for places. Luckily this game comes with a generator for names. So it generated me Jaditlos.
One more click and the adventure on the distant planet Jaditlos began.
We start the game as a meteor crashes down on this planet and a little cell breaks free from it. Instantly we are tossed into a tutorial on how to move and do stuff. Soon enough we notice that we are not the only ones here... Sadly enough we are actually the smallest and weakest cell here...Gladly there are some brocks of meat floating around so we can grow by eating them.
Now the game comes up with the evolution system. You first have to find parts that you can use for yourself. Those are dropped by enemies randomly or hidden inside pieces of our meteor. Once you have got one you cann call a partner from your species. After the game indicates where one is you can go find it. Then you are taken to the editor.
Here you can see the cell from above and change it a bit. You can make it slimmer or fatter and equip your new parts.
How you place your tiles is up to you and here is where startegy kicks in. I for example put some poison throwers on my back and put spikes to my side. Now whenever a bigger one tried to eat me I swam awy from him and left poison behind. Then when he was dizzy from the pison I turned around and stabed him with my spikes.
Finally you grow a brain. That marks the end of this phase. Now you can develop legs and leave the water.
But befor that you see your "history". Here you can see how your creature evolved so far. Also you can see what advantages your actions until now bring you for your next phase. I got "Wutgebrull" (Angry screaming) that makes all other creatures run away.
Anyways When you chose to leave the water you go to a 3D editor of your cell and change it to an actuall creature. Here you can change the form of your creature freely. Then you go on land.
First thing I noticed: The graphics here suck big time. But that is easily handeled. A view clicks in the optionmenu and: A hell lot better. I like my surroundings.
After all Jadiltos is very unlike earth. It has green water and a purple sky. Also it has my creature which got its name. It is an Illes.
I can control him by clicking somewhere on the ground or the map. Since he is a carnivore and he is hungry I will need to find prey.
Luckily on your map you have little green questionmarks. Those tell you the location of unknown species.
That is how I met the creation of someone else. But it didn't last long. My Illes were quite hungry and so the whole race was eaten.
This earned me a bit of DNA-Points. But who thinks he can create like crazy now is wrong.
You start with very little parts for your creatures. You have to find new ones. Those are either obtained by checking skeletons lying around, or by defeating "Alpha-Creatures". Those are just normal creatures of a race, but have an Alpha in front of their name.
Or if you dont want to fight them you can make friends with them. You do that by doing something friendly like singing. Then they will show you something and if you can do that as well, they will become your friends.
After a while your creature will have a brain update. Not only will it be healthier now it can also recrute one other creature either from the same race or from a rac it is friends with to acompany it. Later the next brain update will give you the option to recruit a second freind.
So far the game has been very fun and I like it. Out of ten I would give it 9.5 points.
So greeting from Jaditlos and the Illes:
