Ellie has been working on an MMO for a while. Haven't seen an update lately, so I don't know what the progress is like now. Maybe you should see if she'll let you work on her project and then you won't be starting from scratch.
I've been doing Japanese localization in parallel to my regular game development. This week we got a review from a Japanese Steam group and as a result we sold 68 copies in Japan. I would have to sell that much every day in order to become rich, but it was still a very welcome bump in income.
It's a bit of a miracle that the Japanese sales took off when they did. Just the day before the bump, my landlord and I got totally fed up with each other. I was demanding that he pay for stuff in his crappy, run-down apartment. And he basically said, "I'm not paying for anything. You have 30 days to move out." I said, "Refund my rent and I'll be gone in two weeks." So we're moving out and the extra income is definitely going to be needed as we get started elsewhere.
On the game dev front, I had promised not to add any new features until the game was finished. I finished the final battle last month, but I really felt like it needed something more. So with the game now being playable from tutorial to final battle, I decided to get back to new features.
I added enemies that will fall back when taking too much damage (with a variable that affects how much damage that is--bandits retreat pretty quickly while the undead never retreat). I added strategic nodes that you can capture for a bonus and spawn points that you have to destroy to stop the enemy from getting reinforcements. And then I realized I could make the "node capture" event do anything. So now there are randomly placed treasure chests on the battlefield too. I think all the extras I added into combat lately will help make the game more dynamic. With the most recent changes--plus ranged units falling back from melee attacks and kiting you around--battles won't just be a situation where both sides dig in and trade blows anymore. Hopefully that makes the game more fun for everyone.
