Peri's 3D art thread + other things

Oh, that's a good point, actually. I don't draw men very often and was worried about him being too much of a prettyboy. Thanks; I'll edit it when I get home.

How's this? (edit: updated color scheme)

I also decided he was enough of a douchebag to warrant not one but two popped collars. Man, though, he looks like the poster child for the phenomenon of every male character looking exactly the same. :I

Much better. Looks kinda pierce brosnan-y (in a good way). The first looked more like a sauk-jason hybrid, which would be too much for this world.

There's not enough collars in the world that could be popped to be as cool as me!

I am so vain that I seriously thought the same thing the first time I saw the drawing...

Okay, I did another one, but it has too many similarities to the first one. Clearly I am not very creative when it comes to characters that are supposed to be sharply dressed. I'll probably change her design somewhat since girls have more clothing options, but I dunno how yet.

His coat is drawn weirdly, but whatever. The main problem is that he looks too young (he's supposed to look 35ish), so I should fix that or something I guess. He is supposed to be kind of a prettyboy, though.

Edit: Oh whoops, I just noticed the waist of his pants is really low. Why do I keep doing that? :I Well whatever idgaf.

Thanks! It didn't take too long to do, actually. Compositing concept art from photos is easy and fun. Much easier to try to get the mood right than jumping into a painting right off the bat, especially for non-natural environments.

Peri, what would you charge for a set of scenes at whatever width and 480 height?

The game I'm working on now mixes past and future, and I think I'd get more effective visuals from something that wasn't top down heavy...

Let me know if you need an idea of what I'm going for. I'd really like to work with someone on something if they have the time. I have money for it, so don't think it'd be all work no pay.

Still, that is freaking awesome. I need to figure out forced perspective and composite imagery...

Unfortunately, I don't have time to do commissions. I am incredibly busy all the time. :( Compositing photos isn't really that hard, though, especially if your bar of quality isn't very high. Like I have a bunch of photos with noticeably different resolutions in there, lazy cutouts, etc. My general work process is to get all the photos I want, make a layer mask and use a big soft brush to erase the parts I don't want (except for areas that need to be more precise), make them all roughly the same hue/brightness/saturation, then smack a texture on top and do some lighting. The simple application of a texture disguises a lot of the most obvious inconsistency between the photos.

Here's the original without the lighting and texture (which is a grunge texture I made blue and set to overlay):

final again for comparison
So as you can see, the image compositing is subpar. It's just the few tricks with the lighting and texture that make it look decent.

No worries! I really appreciate the insight into the technique. I really lack the ability to convey what I have in my head as far as graphics go, but I get the job done as best as I can.

Thanks and keep up the great work!

These are pretty fun to make. I did another one.

I can post a process if anyone is interested. The hardest part is finding the photos.

Photo concept art is the best concept art. Man, this is so much faster and more rewarding than trying to draw it.

Please do! A step by step guide would really help me out and I want this kind of feel for my scenes...Weird and out there! POST A TUT!

IMO, look at them as battlebacks too, I have never, ever seen a custom battleback despite them being the most complicated graphics. You'd be famous. A god even. They'd build temples in your honour and then sacrifice people in those temples in the name of Perihelion.

I'm not sure how well suited this technique would be for battle backs for RM games. Since they're photos, I think the style would clash a little bit with painted graphics. My game is gonna be in 3D, so these aren't actually going in anywhere. The dungeons might end up being prerendered depending on how tough they are, though, so they might get Photoshopped heavily.

I made a quick walkthrough for the second image.

I think I might do a bunch of these. They're good for generating ideas, and I can use them as landmarks when I get around to making a map of the other world.
