Pencil Art Contest [Results Posted]

Pencil Art Contest May
Closed

-------------------------------
Artwork must:
  • Be from an original RPG maker game
  • Portray an emotion
  • Contain an element

To avoid silly questions, it doesn't have to be from your game just any game made using the rpg maker series (no fan games!). Emotion can be stretched to include things like Power, Death/dying , things that are hard to pin a single emotion on.  Elements can be stretched too. Besides the traditional, stuff like: shadow, mechanical, Time, and Aether are acceptable.
Be sure to tell us what you drew, don't make us figure it out.

Dead line:
May 24th 2008 (Saturday)

Rules:
You are only allowed to use Pencils and Pens(black ink only).
NO crayons, color pencils, markers, charcoal, or charcoal pencils.
PM (post message) your work to me. I will send everything to the other judges when we reach the deadline.
Send a explanation of your work that will be posted with your picture.
You cannot digitally edit your work except for resizing.
Your member registered date must be before  April 19, 08
Please! Resize your work to a decent web viewing size. No one wants to scroll up, down, and side2side to see your whole piece.
Your work must be your own and worked on by your self.
Anything made before this contest started is unacceptable.

You can re-submit your entry anytime before the deadline if you made changes or wanted to submit something better.

Judges:
I'll be judging and posting the results, but I'm looking for 2 more judges.
Judging will be based on a scale of 1-10 for 3 categories Originality, Detail, and Theme related. There maybe a 4th category depending on the theme guidelines. Like if the work is supposed to be used in a game for example.
I don't want this to be an open member vote because I'm afraid people will vote for the prettiest picture. This is suppose to be fun, so don't worry if there are better artists out there. Participate anyways.

Prizes:
I'd like to get the winners something nice this month. Last contest I made sprites for the winner. Actually it was pasted down to the 4th place winner; so even if you don't win you might still get something! Right now I'm thinking of a $5 $10 $15 Amazon.com gift card. But I'm open for other suggestions.

Judging Results:
Clest:
Originality: 6/10
Detail: 4/10
following criteria  (the emotion and element part): 6/10
Additional Comment: It could've come out a lot better if you could have just added a little shading to the pictures. Just line work won't let people understand what's going on. With little detail, you don't know what's going on, with too much, you don't know where to look. You just need to learn to balance things out.

SakuraPhoenix:
Originality: 9/10
Detail: 9/10
following criteria  (the emotion and element part): 8/10
Additional Comment: This is probably the winning entry right here, IMO. The emotion is well portrayed, the anatomy and details are good, and the power to control shadows with your mind is just screaming with originality XD. I enjoyed this entry very much.

MonkeyDlu:
Originality: 7/10
Detail: 6/10
following criteria  (the emotion and element part): 8/10
Additional Comment: You could have made it a lot cleaner than this, because it seems like you did a rush job here. Things look a tad crooked to the right side of it, but the emotion is there.

WeissRaben:
Originality: 6/10
Detail: 7/10
following criteria  (the emotion and element part): 8/10
Additional Comment: When I first saw this picture, the first thing that came to my mind was "WTF Sasuke?" because of the eyes and the pose you used on him. 6 on originality because even if you did think of the pose on your own, I find it used very often nowadays. The lightning is good though ^^.

Xcelled:
Originality: 5/10
Detail: 3/10
following criteria  (the emotion and element part): 3/10
Additional comment: I didn't know what to make out of this picture. Even though it's a giant man eating worm, it wasn't portrayed very well. Good try though.

Ynlraey:
Originality: 7/10
Detail: 7/10
following criteria  (the emotion and element part): 9/10
Additional Comment: Although a bit confusing, this picture can transmit the feeling and depression the characters are feeling on that exact moment of time. Could've come out a lot cleaner though :/

ZephyrSky:
Originality: 6/10
Detail: 8/10
following criteria  (the emotion and element part): 8/10
Additional Comment: You have a basic understanding of anatomy, and I like what I see here. Although Dark and Light have a lot more to it than just your interpretation of it, it seems that you wanted to make it simpler and leave the details for the characters.
Clest:
Originality: 8
Detail: 7
following criteria  (the emotion and element part): 8
comment: I actually recognize what game this is from. I was expecting more people to draw from games that I've seen/played.

SakuraPhoenix:
Originality:9
Detail: 10
following criteria  (the emotion and element part): 9
comment: Its almost unfair to everyone since you're so good. Big, Lots of detail, dynamic view; what more can I say?

MonkeyDlu:
Originality: 7
Detail: 7
following criteria  (the emotion and element part):8

WeissRaben:
Originality: 8
Detail: 9
following criteria  (the emotion and element part): 8

Xcelled:
Originality: 8
Detail: 6
following criteria  (the emotion and element part): 8
comment: kudos for being the first to submit an entry. It definitely stands out compared to everyone else's since
its a monster and not a person making it hard to portray an emotion. The "help" bubble made me chuckle.

Ynlraey:
Originality: 9
Detail: 8
following criteria  (the emotion and element part): 7
Comment: I gave you an 8 for detail because you filled the whole page with pencil
but you could use darker values. Everything blends together and its hard to tell apart things
like the girls hair from the tree

Zephyrsky:
Originality: 7
Detail: 8
following criteria  (the emotion and element part): 7

1st place: SakuraPhoenix
2nd place: Ynlraey
3rdPlace: WeissRaben

Clest:16+23=39

SakuraPhoenix:26+28=54

MonkeyDlu:21+22=43

WeissRaben:21+25=46

Xcelled:11+22=33

Ynlraey:23+24=47

Zephyrsky:22+22=44

lol, it's true XD

I'd love another pencil art contest.

If I had to pick from the list, I'd say portraying a relationship. That'd be very fun.

I'll suggest something for the hell of it though, how about a emotion portrait? Draw a character original or fan, displaying a powerful emotion. So the one who can best convey the emotion will be a factor in judging.

Hmm...how about something like drawing a creature...a dragon maybe?  Dragons, although not an original idea, can be so widely varied in appearance and structure that each has its own unique identity.  No two dragon pictures look the same!  A theme like that would narrow it down to a very specific topic and end up with varied and interesting results.  Anyway, that's my idea.

I suggest a theme of power.  Whatever the creator thinks represents power would be interesting to see and it allows for a broad range of possibilities.  Depending on the theme, I may enter this contest.  I'm decent with pencils . . . actually they're the only thing I'm good with.  If I don't enter, I would like to be a judge.

I've added the new ideas to the list. Personally I like the emotion and dragon ideas. It seems like people like drawing characters more then anything.

Ahh...would it not be interesting to see a combination of the two?  You take a creature that can be varied so widely as a dragon and try to portray extreme emotion.  Such a drawing would be much more interesting than expressing a traditional human emotion.

how about something related to rpg's in general, like "Draw a Cliché".

Just giving ideas for something funny. I've been bored as hell and need something go be entertained.

Although it may be practical, I don't like the dragon idea.  The texture of the scales takes forever and gets annoying very quickly.  I guess it would be a further test of artistic skill, but I've drawn enough dragon scales in my life.

When we narrow the choices down I'll post a poll. I've got to figure out how first, with the forum change I can't find the poll option when creating a new topic.
I don't expect the number of votes to be very high, so I could keep track the old fashion way.

A Dragon design contest sounds awesome, though emotion and cliche sound kind of fun too! And YAY pencils! :0 I have a suggestion--how about drawing a scene? :0 Like... mid-battle or something? Or a scene from an rpgmaker game you played and liked. x3 I dunno.

:3 Epic first-ever post, hm?

Thats not a bad idea! A scene from a game could be taken and drawn in the artists own way. You could take everything suggested and string it together that way!

I vote for Pelica's idea!

everyone wants to draw something different, so we'll have to find a way to tie what everyone wants together.

I've got it!  A scene from a game featuring a dragon that is expressing emotion while the other characters express a cliche!

Or we could stick to a scene with a dragon in it...

oh, I like the scene idea as well, but it would be best if it was stuck to an actual game instead of just original characters and stuff as it would be cool for people to recognize the scene, it'd be funner that way XD

The only problem with the scene thing is that would eliminate the originality part of the judging.  Perhaps draw a scene of your own original game?  I've been thinking about it and that would be awesome.

~Guardian1239

that kinda eliminates the recognition of it though, you can still depict a well know scene in many ways, it'd just be more fun if it was easily recognizable.

...Dragon much?

Well I do like the scene idea as well as the power theme. But emotions seems nice too :)

The point of drawing is to make something, not just copy what someone else made.  This is why I feel originality is a very important aspect of any art contest.  It's my opinion and suggestion.
