As far as this age of consent thing goes, I would like to point out that females as young as 10 have fully matured eggs and can conceive.  The semen of most males isn't potent enough until around age 12, but humans mature incredibly fast.  Back in YE OLDE TIMES people would get married at 12-14 and would have sex as soon as the female got her period and the male's balls dropped.  The woman dying during child birth or the baby getting some sort of defect were high, but you can chalk that up to poor medicine.

Also, in YE OLDE TIMES (TM), women reached puberty later than ten. People weren't married off young because their parents trusted them as mature, logical human beings. They were married off because "OMG WE NEED BABIES WTF THE PLAGUES KILLED EVERYBODY LET US HEDGE OUR BETS BY REPRODUCING A HELLUVALOT EARLY IN LIFE  "

I never said women matured faster in YE OLDE TIMES (please do not steal my trademark phrase).  My point is that humans are physically mature way before 18.  If you're old enough to know how your body works then you're old enough to understand the repercussions of sex.  Consenting to sex isn't any more mentally damaging than any other event in life.  It's the lack of education that causes problems.

Why would that all of a sudden change? I thought children bodies are born and grown at the same rate as they do now. I actually thought this generation was weak and deformed from all the lack of nutrients in food. But the hamburgers seem to make them bigger I guess, ya know, all the GM food. Steriods in meat. etc.

I just noticed that this topic is saying whether or not pedophilia is a healthy sexual activity when I thought it read healthy mental activity. 

So... yeah.  To sum up my posts with this in mind:

1: Yes it's natural to be aroused by another human regardless of age.

2: No it is healthy to have physical intercourse with someone who's body isn't fully matured

3: Yes, I think society has deemed that humans mature too quickly and our coddling attitude towards our offspring is stunting growth not promoting it.

Well, there is a rather abrubt change but the jury is still out on what is the cause, whether it be genetic or environmental or somewhere in between.  many people are blaming growth hormones in animal products but (even as a strict vegetarian who aught be inclined to agree with such things out of self-promoting self interest) I doubt that the lines are so clear.  Some studies are definitely showing marked statistical links though.

@Marcus: while I agree with you that we are definitely and possibly deliberately interfering with the growth of the minds of children on multiple levels in our society, mostly in an effort to engineer them into what "the establishment" feels is a model citizen, I don't think suddenly changing that would be positive, nor do I think the fact that social norms are out of whack with biology justifies violating those social norms and risking further harm to the growth and development of victims.
