Update/News

I've released two patches for One Night and One Night 3.

The patch for One Night adds some additional content to the game and implements some features from the two later games into the engine, and the One Night 3 patch fixes some passability errors, redoes some scares in the forest area (this is because of Mawk), and removes Hexagon's sprite from the hospital area.

Both of them are highly reccomended downloads. You can access them both from the download links posted in the game threads.

I hope it wasn't just the forest. while that was the only portion of the game I reviewed, it has implications for the entire game. following the letter of critique is generally not the best idea; it should signal you to re-examine anything in the vein of the critique, even if it isn't explicitly mentioned in the criticism itself.

Yeah I looked over the rest but the forest is really the only part where such scares were used, so it was in need of an overhaul, where the later areas are generally okay as is.

Update

The site hosting my uploads (RPGMaker.net) overhauled their site URLs today so the links I had posted previously died. I have now updated them. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Saturday, 8th May, 2010

As of this moment (3.20 PM) I'm uploading the second version of One Night 3: Special Edition which addresses the finnicky exploration system to make it more intuitive and in line with the preferable system in One Night 2.

This is a major revision to the game, with this change I believe it is now the best in the series and the ultimate One Night 3 installment. Basically, these changes have been brought about in this new release:

Major Change One: *Most* tems such as keys, puzzle items and supplies are now marked with a sparkle, just like in One Night 2, to make exploration easier and less of a chore.

Major Change Two: Monsters can no longer attack you while you examine things such as locked doors. In this version, they are prevented from getting within attacking distance while you read.

I hope you enjoy this new version of One Night 3, which I worked hard on to be the very best in the series.

Hey everyone, I've had a few complaints about RMN being down a fair bit and downloads being inaccessible, so I've added an extra download mirror (FileFront) for One Night 3.

so i understand you are a bigwig and all, but please dont update your three games with a copy and paste message of the same post. Its somewhat arrogant and cold. Next time, if you want to bump something, make it more significant or answer a question.

Sweet, an update on One night 3. I never really managed to complete this game when I tried it. Hopefully this update will make the game much better. Great idea with the sparkle for the hints, I'm actually thinking of doing something similar with my horror game.

Just one thing I think is important. Shadows of the Stillwaters seems good much like the others. Although I would reccommend you change some of the corpse sprites just like in your other games. They look too much like fantasy characters instead of modern characters if that makes sense. Although they are gory leaving a disturbing effect, I don't feel it fits well with the rest of the graphics. Maybe you should use more modern corpses...

Apart from that, the game is looking great. Hopefully I'll manage to complete it this time. I'm downloading now, looking forward to playing it...

EDIT

Ok, I've been currently playing One Night 3 and now I remember why I stopped playing it the first time. I know in horror games you usually have to figure out where to head next and there's not much of a sense of direction. So far the atmosphere in your game is good but I've got stuck already. And this I mean stuck at the start of the game!
This is something I really dislike about some games when you either get stuck at the start or when it's too difficult for some people to figure out.

Right I enjoyed the sound effects, and special effects so far especially with the spooky demon walking across the screen. You've used music well to set the mood. I'm dying to get further into the game... :thumb:

Ok so what do I do now. I've been in the house and found the key to open up the closet? Where do I go now because I must have pushed enter on every tile in the house and I've wandered the woods for about 30 minutes looking for a hint of where I need to head next. I think you need to make it a little more clear at the start of the game leaving hints about what needs to be done because this can put off players. They may not get past the first 5 minutes of your game and give up...

@bacon: Umm... There are at least two months between each of the last three posts I made and furthermore, they all contain different updates, one's an apology for a URL change, then two months later there's one about gameplay changes and two months later there's one about a new mirror uploaded. What's your problem?

@obsorber: Take the closet key to the upstairs bedroom and open the closet next to the bed... Take the Baseball Bat in hand and go back to where you found the key, and smash down the dead tree.

Sorry, I didnt see other posts before hand. I wasnt expecting a 1 minute double post. o:

Also, I fixed the background issue on your One Night (1st) thread. It should look like a normal thread now. Just some member doing something stupid.

I still think a new mirror is a really insufficient reason to bump a thread. you've got a habit of pushing your threads up with the tiniest updates you can make, and I'm not a big fan of that.

as a rule of thumb, you should bump a silent thread if you have made a change which you feel would open new potential for discussion. otherwise, just edit it into the first post. things like "I've added a new mirror" and "I'm 15% done on this other project" would be understandable if you mentioned them as part of a more significant post, or as conversation in an active topic, but as things stand they're just obvious grabs at the front page.

I'll also thank you not to respond to a decent request from a moderator with "what's your problem?", even if he was mistaken about it being the same message in all three cases. correcting him would be enough.

Yeah, I've already got the bat so I'll go look for dead tree now. Cheers Gaia! :thumb:

By the way, have you considered having a run system for the game?

Wow now your spamming RM games.

Anyways I'm not really a fan of horror games.

And I don't wanna play it.

However, just curious, does this have any screamers?

This game does have a few loud shock noises. I wouldn't say screemers though. I would reccomend you give it a try, you'll be quite suprised how the atmosphere and story can draw you in. I was had with the idea about the boy coming into the strange place to find is sister. A simple but great idea. Even so, I still feel this maybe the weaker One night game of the series. It doesn't give you as much chills as the original did...

There are no "screamers" in the game, if you mean flashing pictures with loud sound effects. Basically, I tried to emulate Fatal Frame/Silent Hill for the scares and atmosphere.
Also, how do you mean that I'm "spamming RM games"? Is that an insult of some kind? If you don't like it, don't play, it's simple. I only ask that you don't post your hate here. If not, I'm sorry, but I didn't "get" the context in which you've said it.
If you're commenting on the story similarities between ON3 and Silent Hill, I've said before that the game's opening was intentionally modelled after Silent Hill 2, one of my favourite games. The story deviates rather early on though. It's got a more scientific Resident Evil esque story than a SH style supernatural one.

@bacon: Sorry dude, I thought you were having a go at me. Thanks for fixing the background problem.

@Kyp: I basically treat my threads as blogs. Any update is a significant update for me... I had a lot of people requesting new mirrors. Notice that for most of my updates there are significant amounts of time between bump posts and most of my update posts (sans these mirror ones) involve new gameplay changes I've made, content I've added, or upcoming new features of my game, which should "open up new discussion."
I've posted about releasing new editions of the One Night games, which have new content/features in them, and apart from that I post either update lists for Legionwood (which are rather in depth) or apologies for URLs going down or whatever. I didn't realise I was causing any trouble doing this.

EDIT: I was reading over the thread just now... Is it possible that someone could remove all the posts that involve me arguing with Mawk or about Misaos? Mawks review posts are useful though as are all other feedback posts but if possible to clean up the thread could all the conflict be removed?

friend's response was actually directed at a post from an adbot (jhonsadins) that I deleted shortly afterward. pretty clever for an adbot, in that it reposted snippets from posts near the beginning of whatever topic it found (in this case, a snippet from your OP) instead of using the typical broken english of a pregenerated statement. still absolutely transparent, but it's something new!

and no worries. just something to keep in mind.
