Haasten (Beta Demo) d(ovo)

Ixis, do NOT change those fucking backgrounds. They are awesome. People may notice them, but thats not to mean they critisize(?) them. Although, btw, that other style you had was pretty rad as well.

EDIT: just noticed the font 13oclock right?

Yep, but I tweaked it a lot in Illustrator. :P

@Fallstel

Heheh, thanks. I'm actually kind of using both.

NEWS!!
I'm typing this from my school's computer-lab. College started back-up and I won't have my PC with all my stuff until Wednesday so... Radio-silence till then.

Thanks everyone for your support!

Well, I got my computer stuff back in today, but UPS did a good job of practically BREAKING EVERYTHING I FUCKING SHIPPED!!

My speakers are cracked to hell, my monitor is barely holding up, I'm getting keyboard errors and parts of my computer was falling off! Luckily my roomate and I were able to fix the computer itself and it's running without any problems (that I've encountered so far) but Haasten will be on hiatus until I can get a new monitor and speakers (I can't get my monitor on a higher res than 800x600, and even at this setting the screen is squashed and warped in the middle.)

I'm just glad I covered all my shit in shipping (it's a grand total of $2000+.)

To try and compensate I'm allowing anyone to try out the Beta-ish version of Haasten. It's a file I let a few people test out in secret for me (you know who you are, thanks a bunch!) Mostly I want to know how a certain scene at the end of the demo works on other computers (it uses ccoa's weather script as well as a couple sprites moving back and forth, the screen changes colours and the map is very very wide.) Try it out and tell me what you think: DOWNLOAD HERE!!!

As soon as I can get a working system together and some more stuff I'll upload it for everyone to enjoy... I just hope UPS can write me that damn check so I can get back to freakin' work.

ciao~!

Good luck, just bug them untill you can get what you deserve. If the person you talk to can't get if for you, ask for their boss.

EDIT: Just Played Beta

Great stuff so far! Really Diffrent. In the begining with the Princess, I was really hoping to see Bowser :). That last scene ran a little choppy (I have P4 3Gig, 1Gig Ram).

I have to be honest though - The language is a bit too much, some parts more too much that others. It's your game, you want it to feel a certin way, have it the way you want. It's very funny - I think many parts could work better without it, some parts might require it :). It just unfortunate because this will be a great thing I cannot share with my kids. Even reading it to my wife, I had to filter it. But still - solid project, I'd totaly pay to play the finished project. I wish you will with your computer issues.

Hmm... Could you go into more detail about this? Was the entire scene choppy or only certain parts? And how slow did the game actually become? Was it unplayable, or only running at maybe 60% speed? Also, if you could tell me the framerate (it's F3 on the keyboard I think) that would help too. :)

Heheh, it's funny because when I originally wrote the screenplays all the very vulgar language was bleeped out or edited. Though, Haasten isn't a game I'd reccomend playing with your kids. While I can always edit the language, and have no problem doing so, the subject matter cannot be changed. Haasten is a series that deals with traditional gender roles in a post-modern world. And as such topics can get a little complex at times (I try to deal with these issues in a mature way, but the series is ideally written for young-adults.)

But, I think you're talking about that first scene, with the blue alien. Which I have no problem changing around. I kind of re-wrote the dialogue one night and didn't go through editing. I sort of went with the way the character felt like at the moment (some angry disgruntled alien raving over some intergalctic MP3s.)

Everything else however I want to keep in the Simpsons/Futurama/Family Guy range of discretion. I intended to go through the dialogue again anyway (specifically shortening Ryan's rant on Final Fantasy... And... Possibly changing the title of the game from "Final Faggotry" to something else.)

... Oh... And I suppose the king's little speech... I don't know. It is kind of funny in an immature nonsensical way. I'll keep an eye on how people react to it.

Thanks for your comments.d(-vo) Hopefully I can buy a new monitor this weekend and get back to work... -_-

I think it ran pretty close to 100%, the slowdown was, the scrolling seemed to go very slightly slower at small increments. I could only notice it because the walk animation wasn't completly smooth, the legs would walk normal then it looked like it would jump an animation, maybe every 5-10 steps. I'll check out the frame rate as soon as I get the chance.

That would be great! May I suggest "Final Final Fantasy XV-2: This Time We Really Mean It" or something along those lines.

EDIT: I can't get it to show framerate with F3, or F1-F12, is there a method to it?

I get a glitch-full cut scene when the autumn leaves are falling but not necessarily laggy. All in all, I’m giving it a 5 outta five for a Beta released demo because of being very graphically and interactively enjoyable from my point of view. Hope you get that money from UPS, I’m getting rid of my PC (Giving to brother) for a new gaming laptop that I require for both Uni and Portable needs.

It glitches, like blips (per-se) every so often when panning across the screen. My computers powerful enough to handle almost anything I throw at it, it just seemed to glitch a bit. All else of the demo was fine :)

I don't know how to explain the way this game made me felt... but to paraphrase it.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!!!!

There's too much about it that I love! Just graphic wise it was absolute eye candy and it's one of my favorite styles ever! Even if your game was written crappily, I would have just enjoyed looking at the graphics.

But that isn't the case!

Writing style is completely enjoyable to read. Can't comment on plot because I've seen very little, but dialogue is top notch and I was really sad that the Alpha version doesn't last very long :(

I'm definately watching this project, I can't wait till it comes out!

Oh! Hey, the fps go from 33 to 36 at that scene, but deleting the weather effect didn't help, so it's either the events, or just the lenth of the map. Are all the events active at once? and with carefull planing (although it may be a little difficult) you can transfer to another map without a fade... Perhaps there is another way to simulate a map that is longer than it actually is.

Actually, I think I rember a demo from way back when with a train and a looping background. perhaps someone can scrips us some looping paranormas RPGMaker 2000 style

The events are all going on at the same time, and the map is extra long. I'm using fotz! script, so I can do a looping map, but it didn't work out the way I wanted. A 3FPS drop isn't that big a deal for me anyway.

If the issue is the events, you could try an anti lag (or do you have one already?) or the events passed could be erased, and the events not yet on screen could just be waiting. But your right, it not too bad, the walk animation just skips a little.

In case you haven't played the beta yet, stop reading this post, and down it.

Ixis, I applaud to you, Haasten is genius, simply genius. The talking during the game, such a little thing made it feel so much more real. Though I didn't really like the very beginning at first, during these scenes, with the black background and being introduced to "Ixis", humour did seem too forced. So you may want to work on that a little bit. But when it turned "pokémon" it was awesome. I also like the idea of having "tracks" as chapters. And walking back made it really obvious this was written by someone who really thinks about what is told in the scenes. Ryan looking back on hios actions, and deciding he doesn't care much, it can give soo much reasoning, it really helps with the buildup and shaping of characters.

The music was a good border for the game, and it flows well with the graphical style. Though the earthbound style may seem a little half done in the screenshots, it creates a very good atmosphere. That atmosphere is what you need to keep, even though you disagree on this, presentation is what matters, keep this quality up and you'll make it.

XD you're making a parody with that screen aren't you?

Yes, something like that. >:)

Moreso hoping people subconsciously understand what may happen between these two characters, and drawing parallels.
