  i mean hey don't get me wrong i al all for proper credit. in fact i think plagiarism is the worst offense ever and here it's an automatic ban. but some of you people take the credit-hounding WAY TOO FAR and don't just wait until a game is finished (Which it won't be anyway). i mean back in the day we never credited except for like a .txt file included in the game zip and really that's enough. there's absolutely no fucking reason for GAME CREDITS to be like twice as long as the actual storyline for your game in your project thread.

  this one is seriously annoying. back when ccoa and erk ruled this place with their iron fists there was this unwritten buyt strictly followed code: moderators existed to serve the forums and were not allowed to share their opinions as members. ever. it should be obviosu that there's a problem here but just because you're a fucking idiot i'm going to explain it anyway:
  
  mods here are just members. every mod here is WILLINGLY AND FREELY doing this job and most of the time we originally came here for the same reason that you did. just bygiving a member power doesn't mean we shoudl TAKE AWAY THEIR RIGHT TO EXPRESS OPINIONS. this imo is the single biggest flaw of the past rmxp.org. as soon as a member became a mod he would just sink away into the background and would disappear as an active poster. it should be the opposite!!! mods should be among the most active posters on the site. they should have opinions and personalities and they should be recognizable members.

As someone who has continually extolled the virtues of constructive criticism, I'm sure you won't mind if I put your points under my own little microscope. I actually agree with all the points except one.

Credit - People do get way too carried away about this. Wait until the game/demo, folks, then read the credits if you feel like someone hasn't been given their proper due. Screenshots are only a glimpse of a game at a specific moment in time. It's possible the creator could have said "Eh...SephiorthGoku's sprite doesn't really work after all" minutes after the shot was taken and removed it. Should the creator update his screenshot just for that? No. Everyone should ease up. As for the lengthy list of other people's scripts/graphics, if you insist on having that in your topic rather than just in the game/demo's credits, definitely put it in a spoiler rather than stretch the intro post with it. Those who are curious will take the time to consult it.

Legal Shit - Totally in agreement here. The previous administration got way too carried away with this, to the point where irc ops were expected to punish members who happened to mention roms/downloaded films/tv shows in the chat. That's taking it way too far. We often heard the argument that internet piracy was the equivalent of murder...seriously, I remember that post. It's not something the site necessarily condones, but there's no need to get worked up about it.

Children Present - I agree here. This is just a "let the buyer (member?) beware" situation. Kids who want to be shielded from cuss words/sex jokes/whatever probably shouldn't be on the internet at all...anywhere. While I don't think older members should go out of their way to shock/disgust younger ones, barring certain topics from discussion because "there's children present" doesn't fly.

Now what I don't agree about is the characterization of the old mentality regarding staff. While I realize it makes everything a lot more black and white and simple from a message control point of view, as someone who was part of the old staff, I can tell you it wasn't quite like that. I know I didn't stop giving out opinions and criticism when I was promoted, but I suppose my own personal bleeding-heart approach to criticism, i.e. without insults and RANDOMLY PLACED CAPITALIZATION (lol he's compassionate what a fag) made me far from a controversial figure.

In fact, I remember quite vividly Final Fantasy discussion threads in which there were countless rancorous, exhausting rants given with the passion one might expect during a conversation about world foreign policy. Who made these posts? Administrators and moderators. Also, the reason some mods seemed to "sink away in the background" was not because they were told to stifle themselves, but because more than half of them were inactive and would just disappear from the site entirely, staff forum included. It was the unreliability of numerous staff members that created many of the problems that planted the seeds for the eventual regime change. We were never explicitly instructed to shut off our opinions, and I certainly would not have cooperated were that the case.

None of this is meant to defend the old regime, far from it. Simply wanted to give insight as someone who was to privy to many of the policies and attitudes present during those times.

Volrath you're right I probably didn't make it clear. My post was more about the people now who think things SHOULD BE THIS WAY OR THAT or think they ARE THIS WAY OR THAT. I know ccoa herself never explicitly said "ok guys lol let's not have opinions", but it happened (for the majority of the mods) regardless of the reasoning behind it. And because it happened, a lot of members now have the mindset that mods should be this hidden force that cleans up messes. And that's just not the case.

which is why i said this is some sort of "ccoa mentality" and doesn't really have to do with anybody in particular, but the lingering confusion about the purpose and policies of these forums.

Simply put members need to forget about ALL OF THIS EXTRA JUNK and just focus on relaxin' and makin' their damn games.

Haha, this is an awesome topic.

I thought the other parts were common sense, so I'm not going to go into that. But the credits thing, yeah that gets annoying. It's pretty much why I generally don't play RMXP games, it makes me think "OK, what part of the game is YOURS?". All I see are random scripts pasted together, and I just assume that like people are like: "Oh, FFX-2 menu script? That sounds cool! I'm going to use it, oh wait, Zelda ABS combined with Tactical battle system and FF4 side view system sounds awesome wait I need a materia system and Chrono cross element system too", which doesn't appeal to me at all. Explaining the features and how it'll generally play is far better than just listing a bunch of scripts.

I hate when someone posts a game, sprite, music, or whatever, and when someone replies they say "thanks and all but I wasn't after your opinion". Why else post it other than to boost your ego? Egos don't get you anywhere in life, unless you are maybe planning to be Alan Sugar (for lack of a better analagy). If you want to make a good game, or even an average game, you have to take criticism, whether positive or negative, and work from it.

I agree with that Wyatt.

What people need to do when getting criticism, before jumping a gun and taking it as a flame or bash, is to re-read, try to understand, maybe ask a few clarification questions, and see how they can work with the comment to better their game. So I fully agree with both of you on that.

I agree with your points but is your target audience actually going to be reading this?  I also wasn't aware it was such an issue now but I've been out of project areas as of late.  All I have seen is that Ben Stehley fool saying things and he only just joined.

Is it really going to help delivering a message in a patronising tone when you want people to act more mature about things? Seems a contradiction to me.  How Volrath put it was just as coherent.
