Final Fantasy VII-2: Chronicles [Demo - 23/11/09]

If Marlene's in this, you can always use Denzou as sort of a replacement for Cloud. He should be about the same age as Marlene, and he could be Cloud's pupil or something.

I mean I understand you're trying to go into an original direction, but you should understand that FFVII in itself is a cliché. Trying to steer away from that by killing characters like Cloud will only scare away the fanbase instead of draw them in. And since this is a fan game, your goal should be to get the attention of the fanbase.

Exactly! Wise words there.

Wow this is weird. Today I actually woke up and thought that I'd do some work on it and add another feature to the game courtesy of the Scripting forum on HBGames.

Apparently there's been some activity on this thread since I last looked, and this was the last thread posted in in 'Completed Games'.

Imagine my shock!

I'm not really sure what the Cloud-love in this thread is all about, but what do you expect, you're ideal scenario would probably be some sort of post as follows:

STORY CHANGE: Cloud is alive and happy. He is married to Tifa. Until... Sephiroth comes back and tries to kill everyone!

Also, to be perfectly honest I wouldn't feel comfortable writing about Cloud, he's a rather... boring character. His personallity just confuses me, with his almost confident tone at the end of FFVII and then his emo tone throughout Advent Children.

People, if you're going to take a look at the thread actually try and read some of the posts. I've had these questions before, and I don't feel like answering them again and again.

Although, to the people who find the pacing a little slow, this game has been designed to be LONG. There's plenty of time to get the back story and character development out throughout the game. The introduction of FFVII is several hours long. And that's for one character.

The story hasn't been designed to be squeezed into a single demo.

You must be one of those people who think that most people who played FFVII find Cloud an awful character. I admit he has his flaws, but FFVII = Cloud. You think people will accept a game that calls itself FFVII-2 with Marlene as the main character?

I'm not trying to put you down or anything, I'm just wondering who you're making this game for. It isn't the bigger part of the fanbase, otherwise you'd listen to their suggestions rather then writing them off as cliche. So perhaps you are making this game for the small selection of people who hate Cloud, or maybe even for yourself (which isn't all that strange). In any case, you need to think about this clearly before you go on.

Also, I'm not saying you should have something stupid like "Cloud iz bak an fights Sepirot", but because of Cloud's significance you'd at least need to give him an appearance, or at least mention him, but whatever you do don't kill them off because all that will accomplish is piss off the fans.

I don't know if you've played Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, but if you have you should know that Chrono Cross (the sequel) had an entire different setting and cast of characters. The main characters from Chrono Trigger were supposedly dead, which resulted in the entire mass of the fanbase raging at Square Enix for their folly.

You should try to avoid things like that, and also you're free to ignore everything I've said, it's your project after all. I will leave you alone now.

I really do appreaciate your criticisms RJ. When I first read your post I felt a little pissed, but now I have no idea what had upset me, haha.

I'm going to take each paragraph at a time. Since that's the way I do things .

You must be one of those people who think that most people who played FFVII find Cloud an awful character. I admit he has his flaws, but FFVII = Cloud. You think people will accept a game that calls itself FFVII-2 with Marlene as the main character?

I disagree with these statements. Only the original game and the film had Cloud serve as the principal character, so I hardly think that you could say FFVII = Cloud, I'd consider him only slightly more significant than the rest of the cast. I don't hate Cloud, but I don't like him any more than I like the other characters (although I might be a little biased in that regard, since I seem to be in a minority of people who actually like Cait Sith).

Also people accepted BC, CC, and DoC with main characters other than Cloud.

I'm creating this game for my portfolio, the people who wrote and read the original story, and basically anybody who wants to play it.

On the cliché note, there really isn't much you could do with Cloud that wouldn't be considered cliché, purely because he's such a big character. Any feasible role would be clichéd, mentor, traitor, avengor, or even happily-married.

I understand when people say FFVII is clichéd. But for a fan game, each cliché you take away strengthens the integrity of the game. It would be easy to upset players by having a character behave uncharacteristically, but taking a character who had no opportunity to display his/her personallity gives a much more flexible storyline.

Also, I'm not saying you should have something stupid like "Cloud iz bak an fights Sepirot", but because of Cloud's significance you'd at least need to give him an appearance, or at least mention him, but whatever you do don't kill them off because all that will accomplish is piss off the fans.

Just because he's dead doesn't mean there will be no flashback appearances or mentions. Whilst it's true he isn't mentioned in the first hour, he will be mentioned, every member of AVALANCHE will make an appearance whether in the past or in the present. They just don't have a starring role.

I'm not really sure wherethe fans got off doing that. If the game had different characters and different settings then wouldn't it be the equivalent of the entire FF series? People don't complain about the differences between FFI and FFII in terms of storyline.

You should try to avoid things like that, and also you're free to ignore everything I've said, it's your project after all. I will leave you alone now.

You don't need to leave me alone. As long as criticism isn't flaming/trolling or other acts of unkindness then I'm happy to have it. Unless somebody comes in, reads the first post and instantly hits reply in a feat of anger.

Heh, I'm happy to hear someone talk who can handle criticism. I think I understand you a little better now, and I respect your views on the things I mentioned. Best of luck with this, I hope to see the completion.

Like I said, I don't agree with the story like many fans here, BUT... I respect your work and dedication to this project, so keep it up, I'm looking forward to play the completed game!

Cheers!

I personally would like to play this. But right now I can't. Too much revision and retro gaming are getting in the way. But for now it is very intriguing.

I thought Marlene was 7 in Final Fantasy VII and like, 9 in Advent Children?

Other then that, it looks alright. It sucks that you couldn't rework it to make the other games fit in with it, and I'm slightly confused on how X and VII have anything to do with each other, but I like it.

@MaRk - If that link in your signature is to your blog, I can't see any reference to this thread o.O

@Darth - Don't be silly, those retro games will be there forever! Who knows the lifespan of an average RPG Maker game?

@Eidolion - I can't remember Marlene's age ever being touched upon in official media. When the story was written I actually took the age from an estimate from another website.

Just a little bit of proof that I've been working on this, with a new screenshot!

@Aerif dood, you can't find the reference to this thread because I haven't posted it yet... x) I will post it soon, I'll let you know! The map looks good, keep it up.

Okay so when you get into that building and see the two terrorists talking about key cards and stuff. What do you do after that? I've tried everything.

Hey Starky, if you've still not figured out what to do:

One of the terrorists mention throwing the keycard into a bin. There is a maintenance room behind the duty-free shopping mall, the keycard is in one of the bins.

How about Cloud becomes a old man, gives up his sword to the character. I know this ain't the lion king 2 where Simba lives, but whatever.

Kinda risking the fanbase though, at least give him some importance, but this just another different storyline of the FF7 series. Do what you want. I'll
properly enjoy though.
