Final Fantasy: Awakening

Made a long overdue update that reflects many of the changes the game has gone through.

The project is going through something of a design overhaul. I want to get rid of the suikoden concepts and have unique characters designs for the game so I have recruited an artist for just this. The story has also had some marked improvements and the Matreria is going and being replaced by a unique "Essence" system.

I'm sure you thought that was really witty posting a quote and a link but I dont know what you are trying to say.

Are you making me aware of the fact that there is another game that has the word "Essence" in it?" are you trying to insinuate that I somehow copied this game? Maybe even created my game to replicate this one despite the fact this project was posted almost a year AFTER my own? Think before you copy and paste, and you won't look like a moron.

Someone on another forum mentioned to me that there was a game here that used an Essence system, I had no idea this it was also a final fantasy fangame. There is no details I can see on the system glancing it over and I find it very unlikely that they will have any more in common than a shared name.

it's just funny you say "unique Essence system" when there's already a system named that way, it's kinda go against the "unique" ;D

Also the project may be older, but this "essence" system as announced just now.

well whatever, the game is yours and you name your system the way you want.

The term "Unique" refers to the actual system itself, as in its not a replica of any previous final fantasy system. It does not refer to the English language word "Essence" which is just a word. I would have thought that was a given.

Does your system need to be named "Essence"? Is there somewhere that details how the system works and what it is based on (All I saw was a quote saying you were changing the system.) You don't need to go on the defensive right away, Atoa was just pointing out that there was another game with that name/system and could become an issue later (what with people perhaps drawing that same comparison and asking questions.)

I mean, your game is called Awakening. Could it not be an Awakening system?

Heaven forbid that you should not side with your friend however.

I see the comparison now given that they are both final fantasy games and they both use the term "Essence" but I never came across this project until after I had came up with new name for the system to replace materia and I don't see why I should change it now.

The term essence to describe magic comes from a pen and paper RPG I used to play with my friends called Shiantar, Immortal Legends.

You have said nothing constructive about my game whatsoever, you have linked me to a topic that as far as I can tell you work on that shares a term the same as my own. I don't know what to call that, advertising maybe.

Wow, another game has the word essence in it; he isnt stealing anything or copying it as far as I can tell, so no need to spam something invalid to this discuss. Prexus, I see you are trying to help, but flaming isnt gonna do anything but instigate.

HOWEVER, jacen, chill out and take the posts with a bit of stride. dont start raging over every little thing people post. if you cant handle a couple of responses then maybe you need to take a break from this thread for awhile. i agree that atoa went about it in a bad way, but his point remained that he was just informing you of the other game's name and that it may become a later problem.

everyone relax please and just contribute the the thread accordingly; I dont want to have to lock it or hand out warns :thumb:

I just showed something to you, an "odd" coincidence. Something that not only me, but other people would think strange. I thought that you had enough brain to notice that.

You just could said that the name had nothing with the Essence System from FFE and say that you won't change it, simple like that, but instead you started to act like an jackass and make it looks that i was attacking you (well NOW i'm attacking =P).

i was just showing him that there's already a game that is coicidentaly a FF fan game that also used the same "Essence System" term, i don't give a damn if the name of his system will be 'Essence System' or 'Coconut System'.

All I am saying, is there are a thousand words that could describe Magic other than Essence. You even said yourself, you took 'Essence' from another game (that pen and paper game you mentioned.)

Could you not think of any other word? I'm not asking you to change it, I don't really care. I'm just curious if it didn't occur to you to use a less generic word, that's all.

Yeah you are right, its fairly generic but I think the word fits final fantasy quite well, the developer of FFE must have thought the same thing.

If this comparison is going to continue to come up though I may have to think about changing it. Suggestions?

My concept artist just did a new concept for Noa. He is trying replicate the style of final fantasy characters more closely so here are the before and after pictures.

I think the first looks more like a generic anime character and the second looks much more distinct. The new one seems off in some way but I cant put my finger on it, the alignment of the eyes maybe?

The background eye is smaller than the foreground eye, which normally is right, but its a little bit too much smaller. Also, the entire face is very long, so a few of the features are out of proportion. Eyes are supposed to be slightly above half way across the face.

In this situation, they are between 2/3rds and 3/4ths up the face because of how long it is. If they are brought down a tiny bit, the nose is shortened a bit, and the mouth is brought up a little bit, and the background eye made a tiny bit bigger, I think it will look more natural.

I can try and help you could up with a better name for Essence, but I would need to know exactly how the system works. If you aren't comfortable sharing that information in your thread (i.e it's not quite finalized yet) send me a PM and I will think of something.
