Final Fantasy: Awakening

Where'd you get your character art from? And the comic sans is a really big put off, I'd probably play it anyway, but loads of people complain about it so.

The Comic sans is to give it an FFIX look but I have been thinking of changing it got a while now, I have just yet to find a font that fits. Any suggestions?

The character art are edits of Suikoden 2 and 3 characters.

Wanna hand with this? Makin Menus and stuff personnel is my speciality. Im a good eventer and can do a fair bit with scripting.

Plus im bored and i got my broadband up and running again now and feel like taking on a project. Let me know what stuff you need and ill see what i can do.

Ill fiddle around with the menus and that from the demo and see if i can come up with something you will like.

Dude this is fantastic.

I found lots of things i believe can be adapted but ill need to speak to you some more so hopefully speak on msn again tommorow.

I'm gonna do some fiddling now to see if i can make some things a little bit more fluent.

a couple of things i wanted to know if i could bring up low

1. Pixel movement
I think this might really help this game. Im gonna do a little bit of trialling, then we would have 8 directions for the sprite insted of 4 too

2. More frames for sprites
Once again to make everything a little bit more smooth. But ill need to speak to your spriter and see what he says

3. Alternate Poses for characters
I mean the classic final fantasy poses
  Head down (Thinking/Sad)
  Blinking (Confusion/Random)
Personnel Pose (Every character gotta have one)
  Laughing etc

4. Transitions between scenes
Like between battle and battle report and changing map

5. Maybe the fonts
But not sure coz i kinda like the ones ou are already using. Ill mess about with it and see but i think what you got is probably gonna stick

6. THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE
You cannot put squaresoft on the intro, if they come across it (and they will... ie. Chrono Ressurection).
They will send you a letter of cease and desist and the whole project will be over.

I know that not all of these are that important so you tell me what you think you agree with. In the meantime im gonna mess around with it and see if youlike what i come up with.

Will try and add screenies soon

Got the tea on the go so this has got my full attention tonight speak soon

Harry Bo!

I just finished the demo: I must say it's awesome!
I see that you are using features from various Final Fantasy titles: Materia, ATE, Moogles ("P... P... P... Papers?" - so funny!). Good luck!

EDIT: How did you do so good "Materia Tutorial"?

I am glad that you enjoyed it man. Yeah it blends many elements and themes from various games across the series.

The Materia tutorial was a tricky one, its a actually a complex picture event that is made to look like the menu. Its all done via events and pictures.

Yeah when you put it like that it does sound cliché but so do the story synposis of every single final fantasy game.

A government of religious zealots called simply "The Order" have overtaken the world

Final Fantasy 6 - The Empire, Final Fantasy 7 - Shinra Corporation, Final Fantasy 8 - The Evil Sorceress,
Final Fantasy 9 - Alexandria, Final Fantasy 10 - Sin, Final Fantasy 12 - The Empire

group of rebels
Final Fantasy 6 - The Returners, Final Fantasy 7 - AVALANCHE, Final Fantasy 8 - SeeD, Final Fantasy 9 - Linblum. ect

The group of dissipate heroes theme versus an evil empire is prominent in almost every final fantasy title. I am merely keeping with my source material. The young man, mysterious past and second coming are also also common themes in FF games and in almost all RPGs. Clichés tend to be formed because they are elements that just work well.

I am not going to win any awards for originality with this project but really, that's not the idea. I intend to create a fun game to play that is a homage to the fantastic games that so many of us love.

maybe that's because they are?

wrong. a cliche can just be a mistake that keeps being made, and what worked well ten years ago might not necessarily work so well now that everyone's seen that sort of thing pulled off a million times and knows how it works.

idg why your major argument here seems to be "that's the way Final Fantasy does it so it must be good" because the series is really nothing special and besides pretty much everyone in the rm scene is following ff's cue on things anyway whether they admit it or not.

I understand what you are saying and I am not going to argue with you any more. This is a project thread not a long winded debate on clichés.

To be honest these sort of common themes don't bother me any more than the common elements of a shooting game or a real time strategy. That's just my personal opinion on the matter.

If you want innovation then look elsewhere. That's not what I am trying to do and I don't claim to.

You are entitled to your opinion my friend. Please can you link me to your original title with lasting recognition? I would love to see hows its done.

recognizing a problem and pointing it out doesn't always necessitate that the person pointing it out can do better. art critics do not have rows of masterpieces they've painted themselves, and movie critics don't tend to moonlight as directors. in this case I do have something, but I'm not gonna rush it on your behalf. can you wait until September?

While I do agree that this game doesnt have a ton of originallity to it, it does show promise of a good play. As a hobbiest, that is what we look for in our games. Even so, this game has huge potential of being something great, that is why I decided to assist with scripts in this project. It is not something that I just randomly do anymore without actually getting to know the project and feel its potential. For a demo, this game displays many good things.
1. Great eventing
2. Custom Graphics
3. Custom Scripts
4. Well plotted storyline (even if it is a little cliche)

Awesome Bro

Holy shit Gubid is alive ?! I thought you died in a freak accident involving three cars, a test tube, and 50ml of horse semen ! WOW !

This game does seem a little cliche, and borrows heavily from past Final Fantasy games, but hey, is there such thing as a game that ISN'T cliche, and DOESN'T borrow from other games ? I highly doubt it...

So, are those custom graphics in the character profiles ?

The screenshots don't look too bad, HOWEVER, in the battle screenshot, the characters seem EXTREMELY small compared to the chairs in the background, something about it bugs me...

I love the menu you have, as basic as it is, I just think it looks really nice.

I'm not going to download the demo as of yet (It's 2:30am so there's no poitn at the moment, lol), however, I will do maybe tomorrow or the day after, mkay ?

So I'll give any C&C on the gameplay by that time !

a couple other things

you do not filter snes graphics so they fit in with your resolution. it's instantly recognizable and the juxtaposition doesn't look very good. your character sprites are also inconsistent with your monster sprites; whereas the monsters have fairly soft colour scemes and no specific outlines, your character sprites use heavily contrasting colours, lots of dithering (?), and a prominent outline. they don't fit with each other -- graphical consistency is the first pillar of spriting for a project, man.

more on the sprites, whoever's spriting for you has trouble with detail in places. his poses are alright, but there are a couple bits (the flowing black material just below the red mage's knees, for instance) that bug me -- just tell him to give it a once over and fix things, because those bits either didn't have enough work put in or were drastically overthought.

probably getting too specific here for my own good, but the backs of the chairs should be visibly higher than the seat. the way you have the seats and the perspective done up right now, the train's passengers will just be sitting with their backs touching since there's nothing to lean back on.

do not use comic sans ms. comic sans ms is the ugliest font. do not use comic sans ms. there is no exception to this -- no one should ever use comic sans ms in anything ever, even ironically.

also your color scheme for the menu is sort of dull. just darkening the windows for more contrast with the white text and getting rid of those ugly bubble borders will do wonders for the aesthetics. as far as the borders go you could probably even just get rid of the black outline around the white and be good.
