Final Fantasy: Awakening

banner.png

They say that beyond the world of Issia is a realm of pure chaos and madness known as the Void. This is the place where the Corrupted dwell and our only protection from it are the omnipotent guardians we call Eidolons.

There once was a time when the people of these lands worshipped the Eidolons as if they were gods, and as a reward for our conviction they granted us some of their energy to help protect us from the darkness that threatened to tear us apart, we call this power "Mysterium"

But when the Order took over faith in the old spirits was lost and we became servants to an ancient sentient crystal known as the Anima.

The Order said that the Eidolons were arrogant abominations who were keeping the most powerful Mysterium to themselves so they showed us how we could bind the Eidolons to Issia, and take their energy from them through force.

At first some people objected to this, but the Mysterium made our lives a lot easier. We started to build machines we could never imagine in the ancient days and our cities became fuelled by their power.

But this stolen power has come at a cost.

The Corrupted have began to pour through the rifts between worlds and the very fate of the cosmos may hang in the balance.

Dark times have befallen the continent of Issia. A government of religious zealots called simply "The Order" have overtaken the lands and everything in it is subject to there will, those who oppose are destroyed quickly and silently by their Inquisitors and the feared Templar's. The Order has taught the people to abandon their faith in their primal spirits and focus their worship on an ancient Crystal monolith known as the Anima. They have begun summoning and binding the Eidolons to extract Mysterium from them against there will, and as they do so the lifeblood of the very universe is lost.

The Order may rule supreme but there are those with the courage to stand up to them. A dissipate and highly secretive group of rebels fight a dire battle against this insurmountable foe. Now a young man sent on what seems a trivial mission may uncover the secret to destroying the order and uncovering his own mysterious past.

This is a Final Fantasy story and in it are present many of the themes of the series. Yes there are Chocobo's, Moogles, Summons, and an Engineer called Cid but more so than that I'm trying to infuse my project with the deep sense of characterisation and the unique narrative style that we all know and love. I will be happy if I even come close to that.

Characters-1.png

Noa Osma
Age: 21
Height: 5'11
Job: Ex-Templar
Weapon Sword
Limit Sword Techniques

"I fight because I believe."

Noa is the games protagonist. He is a capable soldier who has a strong conviction to fighting the Order, a conviction founded in a depraved past. Noa is a lively individual who will stand up for those in need, often on impulse and to the trouble of his companions.

Noa was once a member of the Orders holy knights, The Templars and is the only know example of anyone who has managed to turn away from them after contact with the fabled Anima. On his journey he will discover more about who he is and what he truly fights for.

It is customary for all new Templars to be brought before the monolith known as the Anima and when they touch its surface they are forever joined to its sentence and bound to its will.

When the Anima spoke to Noa and told him find his fellow Templar, a sadistic man name Sargus and journey to the the small village of Shar he did so obediently. After his arrival it commanded that he slaughter all who stood and burn the place to the ground. As Sargus began destroying all in sight, somehow Noa managed to break his link with the Anima. He took up his blade and it was Sargus he struck, severing his arm. But it was too late. Sargus's powerful magic had burned the town to ash and all save a small girl lay dead.

Noa took the girl in his arms and told Sargus to return to the Anima and tell it the next time he would touch it would be when he looked down upon it, shattered too pieces.

After these events Noa was branded a Heretic and he joined the rebel group that seek to take down the Order.

Kale Magnus
Age: Unknown
Height: 5'5''
Job: Red Mage
Weapon Revolvers
Limit The Lost Arts

"This is the end here for you, you shall not live past this day."

Mysterious, brooding and unpredictable Kale is a member of a very ancient organisation that disappeared from the world long ago, the Red Mages. Wielding both poweful magic and his revolvers with deadly accuracy he hunts The Order without mercy or hesitaion for the extinction of his arcane brethren.'

Ceana Moonstar
Age: 20
Height: 5'3''
Job: Priest
Weapon Staff
Limit White Wind

"Faith is sometimes belief even in the absence of truth."

Both beautiful and kind it would shock most to learn that Ceana is a devout priestess of the Order. She embodies an unearthly grace that few can ignore when they meet her. But a chance encounter with some Heretics may question that faith, and set her on a path that will change her life forever.

try2.png

Cid Laruke
Age: 42
Height: 5'9''
Job: Engineer
Weapon Blunderbuss
Limit Tinker

A brilliant genius inventor, Cid is something of an eccentric within the group. He joined the rebel group Scion some years ago after the death of his wife Hilda at the hands of the Order. Some would say that Cid had something of a breakdown after this event and he has never been quite the same since. He believes that humans function much like the machines he creates, a philosophy that will be challenged during his quest for revenge.

This is by no means a comprehensive list and will be updated with new characters as development continues.

Mysterium System

The game uses a progression system called Mysterium and it functions as follows:

Basically Mysterium Cores can be equipped to weapons, armour and accessories much like materia but unlike materia each of the three Core types can only be equipped to one item type as follows:

- Weapons can equip Magic Cores and grant a single magic spell such as Fire, Blizzard and Thunder. They grant passive effects such as elemental reistance and damage.
- Armour can equip Support Cores that grant a variety of passive effects such as increased HP, eveade chance, Improved critical and so on. These passive effect tend to be stronger than the ones granted by the other two cores.
- Accessories can equip Job Cores that grant new battle commands such as the Thief Core granting steal as well as related passive effects

Unlike materia there is no "paired slots" each item has a set number of single slots: weapons have many, armour have a few and the best accessories in the game only give you 3 job slots.

Each Mysterium Core gains experience much like materia, but unlike materia you select from a range of abilities that you want to learn from a list within the Core.

For example, lets take the Thief Job Mysterium Core. When you equip it to your accessory for the fist time it grants you the Steal Battle Command as well as a single pre learned passive effect which is Speed +5% You can then select from a list of other abilities to learn:
- Speed +10% Cost: 200 AP
- Bandit (Causes a small amount of damage when Steal is used): 300AP
- Backstab (Improved the chance of a critical hit) Cost: 500 AP

When the AP has been gained the ability is then able to be used. So long as the Core is still equiped, when removed abilities are lost. The Core itself also levels up from level 1 to 2 after 300 AP and Mastery at 1000AP. This is important as to make new Essence core existing ones have to be fused.

Mysterium fusion is unlocked pretty early in the game and is the backbone of the whole system. By combining two Cores and an item a new core can be created that inherits abilities of each. If a mastered Thief Job Core, an evade support core and a Ninjitsu scroll are combined the Ninja Job Core is created. There are going to be dozens of combinations to try and create for yourself.

Active Time Events

The game has Active Time Events like those seen in Final Fantasy 9. The system functions much as it does in that game in that when an on screen promp is shown and the player presses the action button he is shown a cut scene that happens in "real-time"

An example screen is shown below:

Jacen, this thread isn't appropriate for this forum since its a typical project hype thread.  You have two options you can either remove your screenshots and advertisements and gear your characters and story pieces to be detailed enough for critical feedback to remain here.  Or I move your thread to project discussion.

Sorry I never intended it to be a hype thread to be honest but I was not sure where to put it. Move it to project discussion if you deem it more appropriate.

It's a lot easier to see your terrible maps and edited anime art if you don't put big watermarks on them.

Just FYI.

Cheers for the feedback, I can really work with that! They are not in fact watermarks but rather are introduction screens to new areas simaler too FF9, but hey-ho I guess it would take a couple of brain cells to see that.

Just FYI

Cute. Off to where you belong, then.

You know, people around here tend to not like FF spinoffs. Instant turn-off; makes you look like a wannabe. :x Why don't you ditch the chocobos and title?

Feeling lazy right now, or I'd critique more. Maybe later.

Well I am trying to break some of the negativity around fangames but I suppose that is pretty difficult to achieve without a demo.

I did have a demo up for a long time over at the CA and I received overall some pretty good feedback, although it is now quite dated and I want to wait until I have the new one available before I post it over here.

Okay, well the maps aren't terrible, not by far. They could definitely use some work, but they're not bad. Some tutorials and posting your maps in the Mapping Improvement Thread could help you a bit.

I'm not a big fan of the names of the places (The giant Chocobo might be better off not there, and "Evil Forest"? Eh heh...) The characters are a bit cliche (Twins, living on a farm...get what I'm saying?) The battle system is okay (although the battlers look a bit "messy" to me...not sure how to put it but that's what they look like)

The message box isn't very appealing (gray with a white border...not what I'd say to be attractive) The story seems very cliche ("and that whether they like it or not there destiny is set in stone and to fulfill it they must face far greater things than fiends." The whole "destiny" thing has been way overused) There's actually not much of a story anyway, and no plot to speak of really. Elaborating a bit more could give us some more things to comment and criticize.

Overall, it looks okay. The main thing holding me back is that it's a Final Fantasy fangame. It's not a terrible series, actually it's quite good...but I see so many FF fangames it gets really repetitive after a while. But who knows-you may be able to make it pretty decent.

Good luck!

(You know that by saving the face sets as .PNG's, they'll have a transparent background, right?)

If you're trying to overturn the typical opinions on fangames then I would've went with something a little less obvious or at least not as overdone as FF.

You don't really go too much into the plot of the game and that's understandable, but you didn't make up for it with the screenshots that you presented and we can already guess the game features due to the fact that it's FF. There's nothing really attractive about this to be honest.

Don't let that discourage you. Prove the negative hype wrong and create some to shove down our throats. Hell finish it and you've got points from me.

I am starting to see that there is an understandable negativity surrounding fangames. I hope that the demo release will show that the game is in fact not another one of a long line of terrible spin-offs.

I can but hope.

Hey there, i think your project looks ok. the others are makin a good point about the spin off thing low. id say the main point behind is that no matter what people do it still comes out looking like a RMXP game? i no that problably sounds stupid but a lot of it is to do with the system, text, menus and so on.

A cool transition here and there, differently shaped msg mox that slowly opens up insted of fading in or a modified item menu(we all know its limits) and you'll get points from me. Check out Dargos FF6 Sdk. his project is final fantasy like for like. It might give you some ideas

Keep up the good work low. If ya want a hand with anything post what you want on here and ill see what i can do

I honestly don't have any problems with this and would like to see it done.
FF-spin-offs don't bpther me too much, it depends...

I remember this game...

so you're continuing it now?

Yeah I started it way back when but after quite a long absence I am resuming work on it once again.

Cheers for the comments guys.

I don't really know why, but this game really isn't interesting...  I'm a FF fan, and don't mind FF fan games.  But there's really nothing captivating about this one.  Story is kinda cliche, side view battle is normal, maps are decent...  Nothing really stands out.  Whenever you release a demo I'll try that out I guess, and see if I'll feel different.

What he said.

If you were trying to try and get rid of the stereotypes you don't do the cliche and make it good you break the cycle and then people can see that something good can come from fangames.

Personally what I'd like to see in a fangame for FF is some original art outside of what's necessary, to show the story in more detail because in FF they always have clear interactions and this isn't easy to get into a 2D game but if you have a big drawn in detail picture you can understand the stories and characters better.

Oh and there really is no plot whatsoever.

Well I did not want too give to much of the plot away in my synopsis but I may have to add a little more of what the game is all about. My best bet may just be too post the demo and see what general thoughts are about the games quality.

Interesting, might I make one quick suggestion. Scale down your chocobos. If you'd like I've done a version myself that I use. There's two problems with a giant chocobo, it's out of proportion, that was desgined for Kaiser sprites, and when you move near such a huge sprite sometimes you just walk straight through it.

Yeah that would be great to see them man. Quite a few folk have recommended to me that I scale them down but I have just not got round to it.

I have worked a lot on this project to redefine the story and make it feel more like an FF title. I have updated the topic to reflect the changes I have made with new character and story info as well as some new screenshots.
