Final Fantasy 12

I dont know how its even possible to beat Yiazmat, who has fifty million HP, in an hour. Every walkthrough i've looked at even said it will take five hours at the least. And its not because its hard; its just time consuming and there is a lot of HP to knock down. Hell, you could leave the battle field ANYTIME you wanted, save, and come back and he would have the same amount of HP. As i said, not hard.

Though I may have disliked how stupid the rewards were and how worthless the summons were; the only part that I truly didnt like, as i stated, was the lack of a romance story. I enjoyed the rest of the game thoroughly. Why else would I play it for 120 hours? But there will always be parts of games that I hate; no matter how great the game is, NOTHING is perfect. Even if it can get close, haha.

(Though, honestly, FF10 was far better. That thing had me playing for over 150 hours and I still didnt complete EVERYONES Sphere Grids. Ah, gotta love it. FF7 had me playing for 80 hours to master it, FF8 for 60 to master it, and FF9 was going on 60...)

Don't rush it, enjoy what it gives you, and it's by far the best FF to date (well I haven't played any before 6 but w/e, I don't care). You need to approach it with an open mind- this isn't FF as you know it, but this is FF as it is going to be for some time.

Admittedly, FF13 better have more character development. That was surely lacking for many characters- but the game actually made me laugh at a number of points, which is damn site better than the cringeworthy scenes in FFX (I loved the game, but they were many) or overwrought angst of 7 and 8.

Part of my bias towards loving FF12 so much might be because I am -tired- of the tired old FF experience. Blue battle command window, battlers on one side, monsters on the other, linear storyline with only end-game side quests. A big reason why I love FFX-2 as well. As I think I've said before. FF12 is taking FF in the direction it needs to go to compete with other RPG series.

ccoa, I don't know when it passed that my reasons for disagreeing with people are defaulted to being less valid than their reasons for disliking something. I thought I laid out my reasoning in a way that was level headed and valid, but I suppose I was wrong. Sucks to be me, I guess.

Maybe my last post is to blame, but hey - I'm usually pretty darned ignorant.

I stand by my statements, though, ignorant fanboy as I am. Most people, generally, who dislike FF12, do so for a reason that is their own fault. Either from approaching it narrow mindedly, or doing things that decrease their enjoyment of the game, when they don't need to do it. If you think automating all your characters fully makes the game boring, don't do it. It's not required, and it's clear it's not the way you want to play. You do not have to grind to finish the game. If you don't like grinding, don't do it. The plot may be shallow compare to other RPGs, but RPGs tend to get out of hand with depth and interrelated characters. Compared to literature - even extremely famous literature, the depth of the plot and the development of the characters is on par. If you don't like the plot, or the story telling style, that's fine, you're welcome to that opinion. But if you think the characters are flat and the story is boring, I think it's necessary to admit that someone is missing something. I saw depth in the characters, and I loved the story.

If that makes me a fanboy, well, I guess I don't care.

As for the last bit of my last post, let me make something clear that you missed. There is a difference between playing a game for 40-60 hours to see the ending, and playing an additional 100-150 hours to beat a boss that gives you nothing but the satisfaction of wasting even more time unnecessarily playing a game you don't like. I hated Halo 2, but I beat it so I could see the ending. I hated Tales of Legendia, but I beat it so I could see the ending. What I didn't do was spend hours beating Halo 2 a second time in hardcore, or go after all the optional bosses in Tales of Legendia.

If you don't like the game, don't play it exhaustively. Now, I would again suggest that you shouldn't continue playing a game that you hate, regardless, but some games we hope deep down may just redeem themselves.

And I love that you, once again, assume that I am condescending and irrational regarding all issues. I don't expect people to finish something to have an opinion of it. I almost didn't finish many games, because I feel no real compulsion to finish a game that I'm not enjoying, except for the category of games I mentioned before. I never finished Suikoden Tactics, Unlimited SaGa, Neo Contra, Drakengard, Devil May Cry 2, Star Ocean 3, most Dragon Quest games, Arc the Lad 2, or Mega Men X Command Mission, but I have pretty strong opinions of dislike that I think are, more or less, perfectly valid, and I don't expect anyone else to finish something before their opinion is formed enough to be worth mentioning.

I've made it clear from the start that I was stating my opinions on this matter, and trying my hardest not to just plain shoot down anyone elses. While I do believe that people who don't like this game are simply missing something, or doing something wrong, I don't see how that belief is condescending or worthy of derision.

To think, I thought your countdown comment was good natured. Guess I'm a bigger idiot than I thought.

Edit: Oh, also, I never finished everything in FFXII - I thought Yiazmat was the boss up on the mountain place thingy. I don't remember the name of the zone. I looked it up online and realized my error ^_^ Didn't help that someone somewhere said he had 500,000 HP or something.

Longest Fantasy ever, if you don't do a speed run.

I thought it was one of the shortest, didn't even need to speed run through it....major problem with the game was it never built on the characters and the story itself was rather bland....what made this FF good was the battle system, although alot hated it i seemed to like it alot.

But yeah the game was rather short and if you were good at final fantasys or games in general, this was an easy completed games....even the secret bosses failed to put up a challenge...i even managed to beat one of the Summons you should have fought at level 40+ at level 20ish...the quickenings made it a little too easy imo.

6/10

The game was great, but like Mac hinted (I think) it could've done with a lot more character depth, and maybe a richer story, I mean it's a first because usually the FF series isn't as free-roaming as this version (except 11, but that was an MMO), I mean in a way I kinda felt like playing an MMO offline, it just didn't quite have the magic or awesomeness of 1-9 (particularly 9, excluding 7 because everyone obsesses over 7), but if it had multiplayer-PvP then I guess it'd be more fun.

To be honest, I'd suggest NWN2 if you like freeroam RPGs (plus it has a toolset similar to RPGXP!)

Actually, characters aside, this is one of the best stories. The political aspect of the game was top notch and rather engrossing.

I agree that XII was one of the worst FF games story wise and musically, but the graphics were very good, and while I found the battle system challenging (and damn near frustrating at times) I still enjoyed it.

If you think the politics in this game were "top notch," you know nothing about politics. As ccoa said, it was very simple and basically just the after effects of a war. If you want to see true politics at work, I suggest you read Robert Jordan's the Wheel of Time. Those books are mostly just politics later on in the series.

I really can't see how the game has a great story. "Collect two magic stones -- no, a MAGIC SWORD!" Genius. And the "Empire vs. Rebels"-thing was used in FF2, which was released over twenty years ago.

It really could have been so much more. It was like being a fan of a sports team that used to be great (being one myself for all you English guys out there as a Tottenham fan) but now has gone kinda funny and whilst it still has the promise of being great, it never seems to live up to it's potential.

Final Fantasy XII I felt could have been so much more to be honest. They did a good job with the battle system, yeah it was different but it was fun and interesting y'know, it made me want to go into battles rather than run from them, unless I was virtually dead.

However when it came to the story and the development of the characters it just seemed to be very lacklustre and dull. The political statement is interesting but it's not used well enough to make it interesting. There was never the real threat of impending doom like there had been in the previous Final Fantasys. For such an extensively long game, even in comparison with previous installments, the story didn't have much depth to it, no sub-plots what-so-ever, with the possible exception of
Cid being Balthier's father and that small 5 minute sub-plot and wasn't written out well at all
. The dungeons got boring, the traveling was boring. It just didn't have the drive that previous Final Fantasys had given me when playing them. That urge that once I've picked it up, I can't put it down. I put this down for 3 months before I started playing again and then once more another 3 months after that. I just didn't have the drive to play it. Maybe that's just me getting older or the fact that there hasn't been a real new Final Fantasy for 6 years but still I could feel that when I was playing this game, I was getting a little tired and bored.

Apologies to Square-Enix but you really did waste a game that could have had a whole lot more. This had generally great gameplay, the battle system, the license board and customisation of the characters through that. The underlying political statement was a great idea, but poorly executed to the point that it just didn't make me care. The characters could have been brilliant, Balthier, Ashe, Basche, they all could have been very well developed and an interesting bunch but they started developing them at the start giving them a backstory, but nothing really happened after that. The quest to liberate a nation didn't really feel that desperate. The love story was a load of bull, as in there was none, which to be honest has been a major driving point of the last three major installments (8, 9 and 10). Which makes the ending song "Kiss me Goodbye" whilst a brilliant song, second only to 1000 Words from X-2 in my opinion, pretty much pointless and irrelevant.

Sorry for offending any huge fans of FF12 out there, but this was a game with such HUGE promise, a promise that before it was even released influenced me to create my own Final Fantasy story on RPG Maker. But the promise faded as did my enjoyment in playing the game because it simply was like they made a brilliant system for the gameplay and thought "This is taking too long to release, the characters aren't half bad, the plot's a little stretched, the soundtrack is a little dull but hey without Noboeu we're not going to get much better, but it's releasable... Screw it, I can't be arsed anymore... let's just release this game."

Disappointing and in no way lived up to the hype the Japanese generated about it or the promise it really showed and what could have been.

It was musically different. I fail to see how massively orchestrated catchy overtures can be worse than beep beep boop of ff2.

Lol, yeah, politics student knows nothing.

I came to this thread wondering if I would get enough motivation to pick up the game again. I agree with points from both sides so far except that I enjoyed the story and characters and that was mostly what was motivating me to keep playing. I found the dungeons real dull besides looking pretty and the battles relying too much on the quickenings. At this point sounds like it is going to be another RPG I throw in the unfinished pile. I still think it is one of the best FF games I have played despite losing the interest to play any further. Maybe it is because I am kind of tired of the old formula and this game felt real fresh.

beep beep boop can at times capture a theme better than massively orchestrated overtures, yeah, it's shocking, we know.

If you are having trouble finding FF12 enjoyable to play, there are ways to increase the enjoyment. Just check out some of the FAQs at GameFAQs regarding limiting your License Board choices, and Gambit choices. I found the game pretty ridiculously fun when I limited the License Board choices, because one of my biggest gripes with the game is the license board.

It might help. I honestly did feel like I was playing the game wrong. I just wasn't enjoying the battles much. I was only barely getting by boss fights and it was usually just because I would switch characters in and out just to do quickenings. I think the complete freedom of the license board if you don't know what you're getting into can lead to problems further down the road. I may check it out later and consider trying it over again cause it just feels like my experience compared to some other people's is completely different. At the same time though it annoys me that I should have to read a FAQ to get more enjoyment out of the game.

Considering the fact that The Man in the Iron Mask is famous for political intrigue, and it has nothing on FFXII, I think it's fair to say that the political aspect was rich and well wraught.
