Enex 2 [COMPLETE]

@Zammysoul: Why thank you. You know, that used to be one of my worst maps! XD.
shittymapyx8.png
AH MY EYES!
Thank god I revamped my terrible maps. =P

@SyvarrisX: Thank you very much for your compliment. I'm glad to have helped to convince you to work on your game ;)

@Actingman: Wow, that's a pretty hefty compliment! I can't say Enex2 is quite of thaat caliber =P. The storyline is pretty dry unfortunately. Im glad you enjoy my minigame ideas, however!

Anyway, another screenshot from my fire ice cave. Probably the last one from the area.
lavacrosserbl6.png

Basically a blue line runs across the tile of ice blocks. You can only step on where the blue line went, if you step elsewhere, you will crack through the ice and fall into deadly magma!

templeofrekkeshxl4.png

A Shadow-Themed temple to the ancient hero, Rekkesh. The objective of the puzzle in this room is to turn all the floorless area into a spot with a flame on it. If you step on a flame, it goes out. This room is easy to figure out but there are later and tougher rooms with a similar way to get through.

Hooray for page 3!

Ooh. New screenshot. Looks pretty awesome!

The statues on the wall (if that's what they are) seem a bit repetitive, but I like the color tone of the place. Can't wait to try out some of your puzzles.

By the way, just wondering, when do you think you'll be finished with this?

Woo, that new screenshot looks sweet. That's actually the first time I've seen that gargoyle being used so densely, I didn't even recognize it at first. Combined with the dark purplish theme, it really has a great atmosphere.

@Busbuzz: Thank you!

@Bushin: Sorry, there is no demo available anymore. You'll have to wait for the full game.

Anyway, Hello everybody! Many of you probably remember this game. Well, I've brought it back from the dead! Recently I vast amount of my time was spent engrossed in an online game, however, after realizing that my topic is something that is to be "necroposted", I've decided it's really about time that I got back into game designing!

Enex2 is really drawing close to being finished now, at long last. It is humorous however though, that every time I think I'm about to finish, I find things to improve. But, I really want to be happy with this game upon it's release, so everyone will understand if it takes a bit long to complete this game.

It is, after all, a VERY long game.

Also, I felt like I shouldn't come back without a new screenshot of something I have just added, so here we go!

voidreapersambushhk7.png

It looks like Eric has got himself into some trouble in the Lunis Cave!

The Void Reapers are strange beings that worship Tehom, the God of Nothingness. Tehom desires to destroy everything in the universe (with the assistance of the Void Reapers), then his Void Reapers, and then finally himself. Tehom is neither evil or good, it is simply destruction (which is not necessarily always a bad thing. Such as the destruction of something evil.) However, most people would agree that they would be happier if Tehom did not exist. Thankfully, the destructive forces of Tehom are held off by the creative forces of a greater and unknown god. This does not, however, mean that he and his Void Reapers are not still dangerous!

Good to hear that you are making good progress. And aye, improving early sections never hurt, and I'd imagine that to be especially the case since you've been on this for years.

As for the screenshot; looking pretty refreshing, almost has a "neon" feel to it or something. o: But aye, I agree that the window skin doesn't seem to fit.

lightrealm2zb3.png

To keep screenshots updated, I've added one of my latest dungeon, an ethereal holy realm. I can't give much description here however, as I don't want to talk about the end of the game too much.

Instead of using a real floor, I use a panorama that you can walk on. This looks pretty cool as you move around, because the panorama moves at a slower pace than that of the objects surrounding you.

@Sonata and Reives: Thanks for the compliments! I guess I can see why you wouldn't like the rainbow windowskin, but I personally love it, and personally do not wish to remove it.

The Rainbow windowskin is used to signify a change in the language to the "Arcan" tongue spoken in the Arcanamilian area. I changed the windowskin to the rainbow for all the events that take place within the general area of Arcanamil. If you very much dislike the windowskin, then you can solace in the fact that it only lasts for a short amount of time. The main windowskin you see for the most of the game is a green version of the RTP windowskin with an different button icon thing at the bottom.

I'm currently trying to add more minigames to the game in dungeons where I lacked one before, but after so many I'm starting to run out of ideas. I'm sure I'll be okay though.

What a cool idea for that dungeon! I'd add about a few pixels of your shadow colour to the bottom of the cliffs, just to ease the transition to the panorama.

Not to critique the windowskin, i'm not really offended by it, but you said you don't want to change it, because you like it.

My computer science teacher said, that, when you develop something like a website, you don't make it for your tastes, you make it for the tastes of your clients.

But that's one rationale.

Eh, I believe a website with business clients and a non-profit hobby game project are two very different things, with different goals. A website for clients is a method with the sole purpose of appealing to the clients, where as a non-profit hobby game is a creative outlet. Not saying that the author would be righteous in ignoring all critiques with that excuse, but there certainly exist matters (mainly opinions as here) where the author might feels strongly against the opinions of a few others, and I think there's nothing wrong to follow one's own opinion as long as it is not a 24/7 shield of ignorance, which I think is not the case here. After all, there will always be target audiences for every preference, and who are a few of us to claim the ownership of the whole "client base"? Personally I still feel that it's a bit awkward, but that's okay.

Speaking of which, someone made a good suggestion on the screenshot thread about that panorama floored map, something about changing the floor colour to match the walls. I think you should see if that works, as it sounds like a neat idea. Although I'd recommend changing the walls to match the floors' colours instead.

Well, It doesn't matter because I changed it to something I like and other people seem to enjoy due to windowskin criticism. (I assume you're talking about the green windowskin with heavy black borders shown in the first page. If you're talking about the rainbow windowskin I'll address that I bit later.)

yeah, so far I've got 3 suggestions to change up that wall/floor problem, so I'll be getting on it. I'm going to try making it be blue at the bottom and fade up to white, and if that doesnt work, make the whole wall blue.

This is what the real windowskin looks like. It has no giant black rim like before but is merely a green RTP windowskin with a different button thing. It's nice and simple, and is there for about 95% of the game's dialogue.

Also, it just occured to me that what most people are critiquing is the rainbow windowskin, and you are probably referring to this. Like I said, it only lasts for a maximum of 2 hours of gameplay and you are given the options in the menu xk8 created to change the windowskin manually if you truly hate it so badly. I'm aware not everyone will enjoy this, but I feel pretty strongly about keeping the rainbowskin as most of the place is a rainbow forest.

arcanforestih4.png

The windowskin might contrast worse with the Lunis Cave but I think it matches amazingly in this forest.

Thanks a lot for the critique everybody, by the way. I'll be posting a revised version of the Light Dungeon soon.

Also! I'm considering changing the font of the game. Do you know where I can find a collection of good fonts to use?

I love the Battle Script! any chance you can send me that I really need one for my game, oh and your main character sprite appears in one of my game's, but he gets killed 10 minutes into the game lol.

@Paulalankelly: I use the Cybersam Sideview Battle System script. If you look for it I'm sure you can find it. If it's not in the scripts section, ask again and I can probably send you the script.

metalcraftingorerefininww4.png

Metal Crafting Minigame and Interface! Metal Crafting is done by first extracting ores from the nearby Bronzed Mine of Rolam. After doing a sidequest where help out the forger acquire a Scorpion Egg, you will be allowed to utilize his furnace to refine the ore. You can obtain either Bronze Alloy Ore or Iron Ore. (I know there is not such a thing as naturally occurring Bronze Ore. That is why I have named it Bronze Alloy Ore, and as this is a fantasy game, I have decided to allow the alloy to naturally form in this mine. If you have a problem.. bite me?) Bronze Alloy is much more common. The refining minigame requires you to run around a furnace switching on levers which unswitch themselves every so often to keep the gas flowing to make sure the heat stays at optimal temperature. Don't let your ore be ruined!

I am aware mapping is left bland in the ore refining room. If I stuck a bunch of objects in there, it'd be impossible to reach the other levers in time.

metalcraftinginterfacesdg1.png

You can take these bars to the Anvil near the miner who you helped in the sidequest to craft into weapons and armor. the [number] states how many bars of refined ore are necessary for each piece.  The left and right keys switch between Bronze and Iron smithing. While smithing Bronze, the list of Iron items darkens. While smithing Iron, the list of bronze items darkens.

woodcuttinggameml6.png

The Wood Crafting minigame. To do this you must perform a short miniquest for the town fletcher. You will then be allowed to cut lumber in the nearby forest, but be careful! If the forest guardians catch you in their forest, you'll have some trouble on your hands! I know this picture was featured earlier in the topic, but it goes with the explanation and the interface picture below.

You can take logs to the town fletcher to exchange for Fletching Credits, which can later be used to purchase bows from him. Credits are better to have than logs in your inventory, as the Forest Guardians will take their wood back if they catch you and you're carrying logs.

woodcraftinginterfaceeo5.png

Here is the event based interface for choosing what you would like to exchange your credits for. It's a bit more decorated than the metal crafting interface. I was given a little more room to decorate because there were less items to make.
