That's the problem with most anime nowadays. Stuff like Gurren Lagann and Haruhi. They're popular, not for doing anything new, but by pandering to anime fans and being conscious of that fact.
For example, back when I was into anime guys would be constantly surrounded by a harem of women, each of which represented some fetish the writer was into at the time. It got way too common and people stopped watching harem anime. Nowadays an anime writer would approach the same thing, but self-consciously have the characters draw attention to it. It'd be like Tenchi being hit on by Ryoko and then say "Ryoko, take your hand out of my pants! If you don't people will think we're Ranma and Shampoo!"
Gurren Lagann has some stupid quirk of the universe wherein by simply believing in anime mecha tropes it comes true. Haruhi is the biggest whore, making sure to tackle every stereotype ever done by anime ever, but tacking on a semi-serious mind-fuck tone at the end to cover up that it's Excel Saga without funny tit jokes.
Normally that's ok, for example I love the Venture Bros. because it plays up those 70s/80s cartoon show stereotypes in a self-parodying manner, but it's the anime fans who go off and say "Oh, this anime is so deep and just THE SHIT!" when all it does is copy something else the anime fan is too young to have seen.
Back on topic, I know the OP said nothing to that nature, but I think it explains why people are so tired of hearing about fucking anime. The hype passed "excessive" a loooong time ago (probably the 80s) and it now evokes rage at simply mentioning it.
Anyway, if people are now interested in watching mecha anime I highly suggest Gundam SeeD, Wing or G-Gundam. While Gundam isn't the be-all-end-all of mecha anime, it isn't as "Evangelion" as most anime.
