the cliff walls and grass are way too noisy, and the grass tiles horribly, even put next to the rtp grass (which also tiles horribly but to a lesser extent. if there were people in that screenshot, I'm not sure if my eye'd be more dram to them or to the grass itself. if you wanna use style number one you're going to have to work at it. the trees seem good, though.
 
Just before anyone gets angry I'd just like ta say I didn't make these graphics - they are from "Refmap", but I'll be making a lot of custom graphics too if I use this style.

Basically refmap graphics are from here:

It's a style I've used before, and I quite like it myself; it's easy to replicate (not that there isn't more than enough variety to begin with).

(Refmap uses no Enterbrain/Ascii materials, and so is 100% legal, and they give commercial permission.)

Also Wyatt, I hope your game will be different than the other mmorpg's, if you really manage to do that, I will buy it... (having pirate as a class is awesome enough but still :D)
 
In want it to be different. But hey, I'm welcome to suggestions.

The trouble is there isn't a very large MMO userbase on this forum - though that is probably a good thing as Vengeance won't be tainted by what people come to expect from MMO's.

That's one reason why I want to break free from RTP really, that's two things against this project - RTP: everyone here hates it; Online: everyone sees it as just being done to be cool or whatever.

the grass still doesn't tile very well. there's like a green tuft in the middle of a big monochrome patch of dirt or something surrounded by better-looking grass, and it makes a very visible pattern. you should poke at it a little longer until it's not so apparent you're on a grid.

I, personally, think the RTP one was better than the new one. I dunno, the new style just doesn't seem to fit the style on an MMORPG. Then again, I guess it's quite a retro look, harking back to the god ol' days. No MMO's then, heh.

I guess you could give it a go. It'd just mean a lot of work for you, if you're sure. You'll have to change all of the graphics so it all fits. Good luck :D

I'd just like to point out also that the trees look so blurry because this screenie is taken in the editor at 1/2 zoom; they look better when just made smaller in paint (or presumably when zoomed out in game which I hope to do if I can work out how to make a zooming script).

I'm gonna work on making my own tiles for this too, such as houses and whatever; I don't want to have just a cookie-cutter Refmap game as that's almost as bad as a cookie-cutter RTP game :thumb:

(Also "Build 3.0" refers to the three major script revisions that have been done, i.e. taking SDK off everything, merging all the Scene_Map classes that were all over the place lagging up the game, major battle system work, and whatever. I just put it in the title for testing so that I know I'm in the right version.)



Update

I found out SephirothSpawn rewrote the Tilemap hidden class, to include map zooming. It works!

The only problems are:

- The mouse system still thinks tiles are 32x32 and I can't work out how to fix it (I need to go through and change things anyway as there are other problems with it)
- The game screen itself needs changing as it scrolls in the wrong places

But other than that, :thumb:
 
Referrals

If you register on the forums, on your profile page, you'll find a url that you can link to in sigs or whatever. If someone registers off your url you get a "referral point"; when the game's released again you'll be able to trade these points for gold and/or items.

For example, mine: http://forums.vengeance-rpg.com/index.php?referredby=1

This is pretty secure in that it is IP address based, so you'll only get referral points once per IP (i.e. you can't create new accounts just to get points).

The Forums

I've reorganised the forums to be a bit less Vengeance-centred. Activity seems to have perked up a bit (though it seems to be a couple of active members and one spammer called Sponge); and I've created some boards for RM discussion if anyone needs be. There's a board entirely geared towards online gaming in RMXP/VX for support and tutorials.

Game Stuff

Revamped the login screen. Nothing fancy, it's simpler now that accounts are registered via the forums. Just a username and password box, press enter to login. Then there's a space for news, and a box that could be used for advertising space (to potentially get some funding). Ignore the AQ advert for now, it was the only ad I could find around that size.

Gameplay wise the sewers dungeon has translated well into the new graphics style:

I've removed the Internet Toolbar from Vengeance. It was a nice idea, but to reduce lag in the game I've got rid of it - the menu bar at the top of the screen that had hyperlinks, a search bar, and so on. I'll post the script in the resources board of my forums however in case anyone else finds it useful.
