1 - Steve Vai
Why?
Being a guitarist for 9 years now i've experienced attempts at many songs by skilled composers, but by far the stuff Steve Vai has pulled out of his head is mind blowing, sure you can go fast like Herman Li from DragonForce, but to put skill into it and have it sound insanely clean at the same time, is a very hard feat to accomplish. Steve Vai in my opinion is one if not THE best guitarists on this planet, and he well deserves the title. I've perfected every song i've attempted playing (including Little Wing by JH) except 1, and yea, its by Steve, For The Love of God, one of his masterpieces.
2 - Joe Satriani
Why?
Joe has pulled off some crazy shit, i was at G3 Live 2003 in denver and he pulled of the craziest shit ive seen in a while. His finger composition isn't quite as good or clean as Vai's but its very very close. Joe was one of Vai's teachers, and to teach a student to be better than himself, is one incredible thing to do.
3 - Frank Zappa
Yep? Why..?
Frank Zappa was a large influence in both Steve Vai and Joe Satriani's lives, he was the largest roll model for Vai in his younger years when he was just starting off learning the guitar. Zappa could play as many instruments as you could think of, from Drums to the Xylophone, but he was the best at his Composition in Guitar.
4 - Jimmy Hendrix
WAI!?
What more is there to say? Hendrix brought a new age of composition and playing to the guitarists field. Little Wing has to be one of the best songs i've heard, the composition is perfect.
5 - Herman Li
Herman Li is bringing in a new era into speed metal, having nearly perfect finger placement he can pull off the fastest shit you will ever see on a guitar. While keeping it clean. He has scaled up with some interesting techniques with an Ibanez JEM, such as 'The Motorbike' or 'The Dive Bomb' and 'Crash and Burn'.
