world of warcraft

now i've never been a big fan of mmorpg's, even though i love normal rpg's.
Whenever i play online games it usually consists of battlefield 2142 or Counter-strike source

So today i decide to download the free trial for World of Warcraft. suprisingly, the 3 gigs took under 2 hours to download, and after the further 2 hours of working out in which order to install the patches, I played the game.

The atmosphere is amazing, the models look realistic, and i love the cartoony feel to the architecture, it really reminds me of Warcraft 3, which is one of my favourite games of all time.

A lot of people just slag off WoW, and I mean a lot of online games these days are filled with 10 year olds who havent hit puberty yet, acting really stupid.

But this game has absolutely captivated me and I will be heading to the store in a week to buy the cd-key to get my account to full, and i will continue playing this.

This game is actually the fullest, and best mmorpg experience i've seen, and i would know because i have to sit there all day listening to my brothers shout out "Zomgz so i liek got Dis armor teh l33t lolz, truedat" about almost every mmo in existance.

Anyone else play world of warcraft? or even if you dont then shed your views on it :)
personally I know I will keep playing this as i dont have school anymore and havent got my NI number so i cant get a job 8-)

I've played WoW since closed beta, but this past year I've been less active since I got tired of my guilds falling apart.

It really is a fun game, but it gets a little repetitive at max level. I keep telling myself I'm going to go back and finish levelling to 70, but I'm hooked on City of Heroes.

I play on Crushridge, which is a west coast PVP server.

World of Warcraft is actually a really fun game. There is a lot to do, both by yourself and with others, and with such a huge community there is no issue getting people to play with.

Levelling can be a chore, but there are things to do that can break the monotamy of grinding out quests and levels. You can PvP, work on trade skills, and run small group instances to name a few.

The game really takes off once you hit the expansion content though. Items become much stronger, your character really develops, and things such as the Arena, and entertaining and rewarding quest lines open up. Also, flying mounts are the bomb.

If you need to know anything about the game, there are a few efficianados on the forum here like myself and Arcthemonkey.

Just don't listen to anything Andy6000 has to say.

*coughs* I played on Argent Dawn since the offical release. Loved it until I got to 60 then I just became bored with the constant raids. I stopped playing for awhile, and when the expansion came out I just can't get back into being obsessed with it like I was.

All in all if you take away the "OMGZ! 1337 loot!" part of being an MMO this game is very well done. Plus I like the little places I find where I can hide during PVP to jump out at people. *grins* Being a rogue is the best.

im like some shabby level 7 warrior :)

i shouldve started playing months ago and then I couldhave been awesome

i guess ill just have to wait :p:

but can anyone tell me what to get out of leveling up?
is the only way to get skills by getting talents and going to trainers?

and i hate the way that you need certain proficiencies for different things :(

My fiance and I are addicted to this game. We love it. We are on the Sisters of Elune (an RP realm) and the graphics and gameplay are amazing.

My only problem is that I can't stick to one character, because I want to try them all. I have probably 7 different characters, and not a single one of them is over level 23. But it is still fun to screw around with them. I just need to settle on 1 or 2 of them to bump them up to higher levels.

We never have really run into immature players, I think mostly because it is an RP realm and not PvP, but RP realms, to me, offer more than normal realms, because it gives you the option to do whichever one you want. Not too many people RP on that realm, but if it interests you, heavy RP guilds aren't that hard to find.

EDIT for Shedlight:

Unfortunately, yes, the only way to gain new skills is by visiting trainers and through talents (starting at level 10). But, you get new skills from trainers every even level.

As for the proficiencies, Warriors can use almost every weapon in the game. Visit Weapon Masters in each of the major cities and they can teach you how to use different weapon types (it's 10 silver to learn a new weapon proficiency). Different cities can teach you how to use different weapons. Ask guards in the city where the Weapon Master is, and then ask the Weapon Master who can teach you the proficiency you want. They can point you in the right direction.

^ care to elaborate?

and thankyou Rhazdel, i will try that once i get some more silver.
I accidently mega triple clicked and bought 3 armours which were about 5 silver each, so I lost a lot of money.

and am I right to think that you can get proffesions at any level?

EDIT: ZOMGZ I logged in and its nighttime
This is amazing!!!

is there weather effects too?

@Shedlight: Yes there are weather effects.

@Rhazdel: My server is an RP server yet filled with the OMGZ LEET! people. It's quite depressing really.

I stopped complaining about lack of required player skill when I watched a hunter solo Scholomance.

And a lot of us like the PVP...

Dunno what you mean by static classes...

There's basically zero versatility in what a player can do with his class, and this is relative mind you. Obviously people who are fans of WoW and this type of MMO will say something like "Oh but you have a ton of options in your skill set and template!" wrong. And as far as player skill, I think it's suitable for the type of game it is(DAoC clone) but I am far more inclined to higher player interaction in combat instead of "pick a combo and sit back"(and I know there's obviously a bit more to it than that but it's still pretty boring)

I'm taking your comments about player skill and combat interaction with a grain of salt, since you obviously have no idea about it.

But as far as static classes goes. Yes, you pick a Priest, you only have so many options. But no class in the game, save pure DPS, is limited to one role in a group. Warriors can DPS, or Tank. Priests can DPS, or Heal. Shamans can Heal, Melee DPS, or Spell DPS. Druids can Heal, Tank, Melee DPS, or Spell DPS etc.

Even Pure DPS classes, such as a Mage or Rogue, have options on how to deal their damage. A Mage can specialize in Fire, and deal burst damage at the cost of survivability, or go Frost and have more control over the fight, but not have the strength of Fire, or go Arcane and be able to throw all sorts of tricks and twists into the fight.

So apparently you obviously have no idea about either topic.

And as far as levelling and questing being boring. Yes, it gets boring, but it's what you make of it. Levelling is a chance to learn your class, and accomplish goals as you progress. If everyone started out at level 70, the game would be no fun and get boring very very fast.

I've played the game for quite a while and I have plenty idea of what I'm talking about. Player skill, as I said before, is very minimal in WoW. The Classes are so restricted to their few abilities they can do it's pretty sad. You're arguing against it because you're just used to this shitty type of game and don't know any better.

dude stop with the harshness, He was just voicing his views, which were layed out and had more explanation than anything youve actually said.
We understand that you hate the game
But your beginning to sound like a 10 year old now

I played WoW for over a year, quitted it today. I was in this awesome guild (not omgwtfbbq1337 in raids, just started SSC, but just very kind people), but at lvl 70 everything starts to repeat itself, grind this grind that grind more, grind more untill you're revered and do it again. I used to be a full-time raider on my priest (6 days a week) but blizzard is just messing around with the current raids and shit. Leveled up a hunter to 70, grinded more (2 epic flying mounts -.-) and loads of BoE epics and basically i was done, it was just waiting every day for that raid to begin. So the only thing i was doing was doing that 3 hour raid every day. Not worth my time/money. But hell, it was (still is for most) a awesome game, the best i've played in my entire life.

Ow well, back to playing ROSE online :P

I've never played WoW myself, but I have seen people playing it. It seems a fun game, with all the levels to explore, and several classes, but I believe that people are spending to much time on it. A girl (in China, I think) died from exhaustion from playing it too much.

I've played pretty much every MMORPG that's been released post-beta and in English.

As of The Burning Crusade, most classes have an ability to make up for what they are missing. Mages can Invisibility, and use Mana Shield to avoid damage, allowing them to eat/drink or bandage to recover life. Previously, Mana Shield was Spell Damage only and thus there was little way to recover against a melee type character without polymorphing them and healing them to full as well.

Rogues can still heal like they did before, by Vanishing and healing up. They have more stuns, and are able to avoid taking magical damage with Cloak of Shadows.

Warriors can temporarily increase their hitpoints with Commanding Shout, and mitigate spell damage by Spell Reflecting.

etc.etc.

All the classes have been balanced to be able to compete with each other, as a team. Blizzard already stated that they don't balance the game for One vs One scenarios. Which is generally a "Warlock beats Mage" "Rogue beats Paladin" etc. scenario, which is fine. Like I said, the game isn't balanced for that.

But thats where skill comes in. A Mage CAN beat a Warlock, assuming they know how to deal with various situations. But equally skilled and geared characters, unless the warlock is an idiot or the mage gets the jump on him. The warlock will with 9 out of 10 times.

I fail to see how the classes are restricted in their abilities. They have roles to play. If all the classes were the same, what would be the point?

Even in Ultima Online, where everyone can be the same or completely different, you very rarely saw people who built their characters identically (up until the second or third expansion at least.)

That is an isolated incident. That has happened maybe twice, in the two-three years World of Warcraft has been out. It's also happened in other games, such as EverQuest, where a woman was brutally murdered for breaking up with a guy online. And there were various lawsuits against Sony Online Entertainment and other players for incidents in game. Big deal. That's the problem with Online Games where the consequences of another players actions can significantly impact your own characters.

The implication that all characters are played the same in any situation isn't true at all. I can't tell you how many times my guild had to stop and rethink our strategy after whiping to a boss 3 times in a row, suddenly changing roles playing our classes differently. There is room for adaptation.

And this is ignoring the fact that different specs can change the way a character is played enormously.

Survival Hunter VS BM or MM, for example. They are practically different classes.
