Women are useless.

Like I said before, Terra Branford is the best example of a useful female role in a video game. Maria, not really, but I can see what you mean by your points. She still kind of had the bad ass "im important" spunk all about her at one point in the game.

The problem with Maria, was she was almighty in the sense that she had a super special ability. She was also the one who had to explain everything to the protagonist. She had the all knowingness about her.

Wow , then i gues there really aren't 'a lot' of female 'usefull' characters ...
I could't only think of Maria (and sees she isn't xD).

What about Samus Aran or Jade from Beyond Good and Evil, or basically any of the women from No More Heroes?  They don't fit either of those stereotypes at all.

Excellent point!

And Brawl caused a metric fuckton of Samus x Pit hentai...

Ok, I think you've proved Rule 34 of the Internet quite enough. (in case you're not up on your 4chan lingo, Rule 34 is: "If it exists, the net holds porn of it.")

To get back on topic, I suppose the key point is, really, that being useful is synonimous with having some kind of personality disorder. Or so writers of game characters think.

Then again, this may not be far off human nature, with that old adage of: "Absolute power corrupts absolutely". I mean, if you happened to have the powers that some RPG characters demonstrate, would you really continue to hold absolute control over yourself? Probably not.

In fact, if you want proof of this, go and run a proper campaign of a pen and paper RPG. You will find nothing as absurd and insane as the actions of Player characters given absolute power in a free and mouldable setting. My long term experience as a GM has taught me that, among other things. (Its a lesson I learnt very early, with that guy who wanted to be a Half-Elf Barbarian who carried a flute and collected silverware to throw at people)

I think it might be that the players only think the character has use, if they can relate to the character in some way.

P.S. - Claire Redfield rox =]

"With great power there must also come great responsibility."

Wise words said by a wise man.

Metal Gear series seems to have pretty badass wimminz. The Boss (AKA The Joy), Venus (of MGA2), all the B&B corps, and of course Eva (Big Mama).
