Couple days late, but it seems like these emails always take a while to reach me.

So uh yeah! That's pretty terrible, changing the law so you can convict someone who hasn't really done anything. I'm not going to be melodramatic and say that this could be the beginning of a police state, but Lieberman's plan does share a lot of uncomfortable parallels. Here's the petition they're talking about -- I live in Canada, though, and this petition is only open to U.S. residents. They have a field for ZIP code to keep it legit. This is a pretty huge thing, though, and sets an earth-shatteringly bad precedent. Sign, if you care.

Dude, he hasn't broken the law. That's the entire reason Lieberman is trying to change it. Rewriting the rules to take down one guy and his supporters!

Well then, maybe you should tell Senator Lieberman that. :cute:

Is this one of the laws where Congress gets a vote? How do we think this is going to go down? :\

If he has broken the law, then there shouldn't be the necessity for Lieberman's action.

He's not a US citizen, and he's responsible for publishing the leaks, not leaking them in the first place. His source is a US soldier who's already been jailed for issuing the documents. In terms of Australian law, to which Assange is subject, they're struggling to find a law he's broken and coming up short.

What the fuck I thought if you change the law after something has been done, you can't be prosecuted for them.
For example there's a drug that isn't illegal and you sell it and a week later they make a new law to make it illegal; they can't put you in jail for that.

and whoever thinks he has broken a law should inform themselves man, don't listen to bullshit people are spewing; I thought so too untill I informed myself and I know better now :|

ok, i can agree with you if his site(which was hosted on a us server when he released the info) didn't release the info in the US(making him not breaking the us law), but he did which therefore makes him the releaser, and the guilty one. the person who leaked is guily of treason among other things. both have broken the law.

@twirly, im not going to argue, i know for 100% he has broken the law, if you want to believe otherwise all the power to you.

"Didn't release the info in the US?" Not sure if you know this, but websites are accessible worldwide, save for maybe China. For this reason, the laws that govern a site are usually determined by the location of the servers. This is why the Pirate Bay is still running; its servers are in Sweden, provided by the official Pirate Party.

I don't want to be a jerk, but it's sort of weird how you're the only one who can identify a law he's broken, even including seasoned legal experts and prime ministers.

im not the only one, and he did use us amazon servers to host the site, among other us providers before issues were caused and he was shut down

Under the law, they could get a couple of years out of Assange if they managed to have him extradited simply for publishing. Usually publishers of leaked information like newspapers are charged a stiff fine over actually pursuing a jail time sentence out of fear of backlash. To put it simply, the amount one would receive in jail time is rarely worth the effort and political repercussions. The reason some politicians want the law changed is to slap on additional jail time to where the sentence will actually be substantial.

It probably will not pass. It is more likely that Assange will manage to "disappear" while in custody with various world leaders wondering how it could have happened. If he is killed, I very much doubt that it will be done through the US CIA. They have a poor track record at pulling of assassinations in secret. They couldn't even manage to take out Castro with exploding cigars, and you know someone spent time on that idea.

I still don't understand the exploding cigar plan. Was Bugs Bunny heading the CIA in those days?

While it'd be nice if Assange managed to disappear, I'd rather his legitimacy be confirmed through a proper trial so that Wikileaks can keep on going. At least he wouldn't need to be on the run everywhere.

Also, turns out that 4chan's DDoS attacks have (surprise!) done more harm than good to the cause. People are apparently blaming Assange himself for instigating the attacks, and associating Wikileaks with hacking groups. Nice going, guys. Maybe if you'd kept Paypal down for nine hours instead of eight, Assange would be a free man!!!

ya i hate the guy, (because i feel he does threaten MY safety as a us military personnel) how ever i like to think im a fair person(most the time) and he shouldn't get blamed things people do in his name.
