Why Wii?

I just wanted to get some opinions on the Wii. I just don't understand why anyone would want them so badly. I went into gamestop and for the short amount of time I was in there, people were FLOODING the store begging for Wiis. Why? Why do OLDER people want them so bad?

The graphics suck, they're the same as the gamecube. Nothing but a gamecube with an innovative controller. People would rip limbs off in stores to get their hands on them. Why?

I mean, what a great scam. Let's make the same thing with a different controller.

I understand the novelty of getting off your ass and 'interacting' with the game, but other than that, all I can see it being for is for little kids. Sure it might be amusing for an adult for a few minutes, but the games are for kids (not all, but most).

I have known a bunch of people who traded their wii in after the fun factor wore off. You don't always want to get up to play video games and sometimes, you don't want to play Mario's fun adventure, you want to kill things. Again, I am aiming this opinion at an older audience, because they are the people with the cash spending it on the Wiis.

Sure its cute for your kid, but I'm wondering why adults want them. The price is good, but like I said, it's the same thing as the Gamecube, and the game variety just isn't there.

Why adults? Even teenagers, why? Why are people injuring the poor UPS guy bringing the packages in to get this second rate machine?

Because it's not a second rate machine.  It's actually a console, not like the computers that are PS3 and Xbox360.  And it's from Nintendo!  You can always trust Nintendo to have fucking awesome consoles and games.  Also, PS4 and Xbox whatever will have a Wiimote-esque controller too.  That's just the way things work in the console world.

Ugh. Why do all of your posts make me want to kick something?

First of all, have you even played a Wii game? Have you? One of the good ones. If you haven't, then you really shouldn't be ranting about stuff like this.

The Wii is most certainly not a Gamecube with a different controller. Have you seen any Wii game? Have you? Now, look at a GC game. Are the graphics of the same quality? No. Wii's graphics are better. Simple as that.

Even if it did have the same graphical power as the GC(which it doesn't.), why would that matter? Do graphics make a good game? No.

As for your little comment about your friends returning their Wiis. Well, did they actually go out, and buy new games? The only way the "fun factor" would wear off, is if they didn't go out, and purchase any new games.

Anyway, a console's worth is not defined by how powerful it is, or how many polygons it can display on screen, it's the exclusive games that show its worth. How many good exclusives are on the PS3? Not even ten. Wii has tons.

Why do older people play Wii games? Hmm, I dunno, maybe because they're fun! Honestly, the fact that older people, as well as non-gamers play Wii, answers your questions.

Yeah, remember Playstation 1,2, and 3? Has the same exact controllers. Only its got to extra buttons on the side or a "black and white" button (yes, i know thats xbox). And, you don't see systems that let you get up and ;active every time you want to play. (PS3 made a wireless controller shortly after the Wii came out). Well, the controller is different, and just like this,

The graphics are a little better. Look at the war games. Those are freaking awesome graphics, and I bet you they could do better if they wanted to, it's just the graphics are meant to be... fun.

The Wii is more of a family system and it has more E10 and E games than the XBox and PS3 have. I think Wii is better because the whole family can play it, not just some 15 year old playing grand theft auto by himself and his 10 year old brothers are downstairs with NOTHING to do.

I think thats enough for now.

This is always the biggest misconception.  Not only does the Wii run in a much higher framerate, in comparison to the xbox 360 it runs on double the RAM.  This allows for richer displays.  Anyone who's played a Wii could easily see the graphics are not the same as Nintendo's previous generation console (Don't check out many of the 3rd party games out there; the ones produced by Nintendo will always have a higher degree of quality.)

I have known a bunch of people who traded their wii in after the fun factor wore off. You don't have to get up to play a video game.  Often times I don't even do this (I spent the entire Zelda game playing like I would any 'non-wii' game.

Have you ever tried games like Metroid Prime (specifically the new one for the Wii)?  It's a common misconception that Wii's are targeted at a younger audience; many of the games are actually not 'child-oriented'.

Basically people want the Wii because like you said, it's cheaper, and intuitive.  I think people are getting sick of the same thing over and over again (Sony has used the same controller design for 3 consoles in a row for god's sake!).  Not only are the new controls fun to explore, they are actually very comfortable to use 'normally'.  Also, don't expect to be getting golden titles like Super Smash on the other consoles.  It's just not going to happen.  This is another contributing factor in why people are buying Wii's.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fanboy.  I'm merely speaking from what I already know about the Wii.

It was worth getting in line for at 3 AM last winter!

Yes, the playstations had the same controllers. But each one had better capabilities.

Why don't you go kick yourself in the head and knock some sense into you? There's no reason to get upset.

Yes, I have played a Wii. My sister in law has one. It was fun for a few minutes.

And yes, the graphics look basically the same.

Do graphics make a good game? Not all the time, but it can't even compete with the PS3 and Xbox when it could very well have.

All I am wondering is why people are attacking other customers over a system with the same regurgitated games as gamecube just because it has a cool little controller. Big freakin deal.

I knew a guy who traded in his XBOX to get a Wii because he thought it was something it wasn't and traded that in, only to get a ps2! Boy was he upset.

Thank you Elias for being civil.

You seem to have forgotten to point out which game you were playing. Or were you just dicking around on the menu? That would explain why you, and your friends got bored.  :P

Yet again. What game?

Umm, you seem to be thinking of the PS3. That was the system that people attacked each other for. Plus, the Wii has far more original games than the PS3.

I knew a guy who traded in his XBOX to get a Wii because he thought it was something it wasn't and traded that in, only to get a ps2! Boy was he upset.

I have no idea what this line was meant to accomplish.

Bottom line: Perhaps you shouldn't rant about stuff that you don't understand. I mean, I don't understand physics, and stuff, but you don't see me going around saying: "Hey, what's up with black holes?! Why should people put up with those dumb pieces of shit?!", do you?

Why don't you go kick yourself in the head and knock some sense into you? There's no reason to get upset.

Watch it, champ. The tone of your posts is borderline trolling. I don't want to have to lock a topic where members like Luminier and Elias are actually making good solid posts.

There is no reason to flame me. I just wanted to have a civil discussion and I appreciate both their comments and I said so specifically to Elias.

I've got to say, if the Wii cost $50-100 more, it would be total garbage.

But, really, I kind have to agree that Wii has too little to offer to entice, well, me. Sure, the games look a little better, but in the end of the day, it seems like the same result could have been been obtained with a accessory for the game cube. Honestly, is the slight upgrade in graphics worth $200+? Imagine if they just made the Wii-mote a new controller for the gamecube.

Of course, they couldn't do that - not everyone would have the new controller! They tried it with the super scope, and they tried it with the nes zapper (cept, well, everyone had one of those) I honestly believe we are being scammed into buying a new controller.

But what a controller is it, eh?

Well, to be honest, in the 10-ish games I've played for it, the wii-mote has only been even remotely interesting in maybe half of them, and in that half, the cool-ness got old as it became apparent that behind the veil of the cool motion-control/pointer heavy games, with the exception of Metroid Prime 3, is a shallow mini-game that gets old about as fast as it takes for your company to leave for the night.

Super Paper Mario is great (haven't played Galaxy yet) but every single Wii game I've really enjoyed would have been just as playable, if not even more enjoyable, on the gamecube - with limited modification.

People still justify their Wii purchases with Twilight Princess - a game that was, I say with perhaps undue confidence, better on the gamecube - the system that it was *gasp* developed for!

I guess my point is that the Wii is cool and all, but I don't think it's $250 cooler. I'll get one, someday, but really... I'd rather have super paper mario on my gamecube :(

I agree, as much as I love mario, I think that it gets old after awhile. People were paying $900 for the wii when it first came out. That's insanity!

I agree with Itachi-Hime (although I think I'm a bit more level headed in the matter).  The Wii is generic Nintendo tripe; they hastily release a console to match the other systems but instead of securing good 3rd party support, they rely on their own internal development department.  They make fantastic games, but considering that ONE COMPANY can't churn out good games fast enough, things get stale quickly.  Throw in the fact that Nintendo generally makes only ONE type of game, it's usually catered for multiplay (generally leaving the single player out in the cold), and their games are stupidly short, it makes for a system where you feel like you just don't get much bang for your buck.

The virtual console is also being wasted.  It's nice playing old games... if you're like 10 years old and haven't played Mario Kart nor heard of Super Metroid but come on.  I'd have to say that 90% of us have beaten half of the VC games atleast 20 or 30 times in our lives.  It's cool that Nintendo is starting to release Japanese games and games on machines that few people owned but the fact of the matter is that everything on the VC has been played numerous times and I can't see myself paying another 10 bux for it.

Next is the hardware power.  Yes, the graphics card is inferior to the PS3 and Xbox 360.  Say that graphics don't matter as much as you want, the overall processing power of the system determines the games that appear on the console.  Not only is the Wii not designed for hi-definition televisions (and hi-def tv's are becoming more and more prominent as the market moves to total conversion) but Wii games look downright terrible on any screen larger than 32".  When I played Twilight Princess I said "I seriously hope grainy N64 textures aren't the Wii's selling point!"

More importantly, this lack of raw power also scares away future 3rd party developers who WANT a raw power system to make games on.  You'll never see Resident Evil 5 on the Wii.  There won't be a game that features the same graphics as Metal Gear Solid 4.  Graphics don't just represent polygons, they ARE the atmosphere.  Just look at ESCAPE FROM BUG ISLAND which looks like a fucking dreamcast game; not only was that game a huge joke, but the graphics completely threw you off from what could have been a intuitive universe.

As far as I see it, the price point and "family friendly image" are the main sellers.  Anyone can play a Wii; even your grandma.  Because there are more people in the world who play Bejeweled on their cellphones than devote 100 hours to play the latest generic RPG yarn, more people are willing to buy the Wii.  I'm not a party gamer and I'm guessing neither is Itachi.  The Wii doesn't appeal to us because it doesn't feature the lengthy, deep, and involving games we want to play.  Wii sports and Wii play are cool when played as a group, but when you're a solo gamer is completely boring.  There's only a handful of games designed for the single player in mind and they can either be beat in a weekend or are available on other consoles and don't require flailing a controller around to play.

How do you improve the Wii?

-Offer more 3rd party support.

-Encourage 3rd party developers to NOT make games based around the Wii mote itself.  I want to play games like Metroid Prime 3 that incorporate the Wiimote into gameplay seemlessly, not base the entire fucking game on it.

-Offering a wider selection of games on the Virtual Console besides games that were released or remade several dozen times (Super Mario World AGAIN?  No thank you nintendo!)

-Nintendo needs to make longer games.  Somehow Mario Galaxy was SHORTER than Mario 64.

-Focus on creating new intelligent properties.  I'm getting fucking tired of Zelda and Mario carrying Nintendo on its shoulders.

Super. Mario. Galaxy.

Metroid. Prime. Three.

Super. Smash. Brothers.

Pokemon. Motherfucking. Snap.

Two of those games are out and both of them could be beaten in a rental period.

Umm, you seem to be thinking of the PS3. That was the system that people attacked each other for. Plus, the Wii has far more original games than the PS3.

"Original" and "Good" don't go hand in hand.

Besides, I'll say this ONE MORE TIME because whenever I mention it, nobody ever pays attention to me.  I'll bold it and resize it for all of rmxp to see:

ummm... PS3 already has motion senosor crap in its controler... and heres the reason why the wii is selling so good right now. its cheap. if PS3 and 360 were the same price they be selling alot better

They'd be selling better and putting the Wii out of the game. You really get what you pay for. More money = better console. Although I do think they are a bit too pricey but ps3 has gone down significantly.
