I've been playing Starbound religiously since its release.
Don't compare it to other games (cough*terraria*cough). It's not them. It's presently one of the (if not THE) most in depth voxel-based game (I'll qualify this by saying "unmodded"), and I'm confident it will surpass Terraria on my favorites list when I get further in the game.
It seems they're seeking a compromise on the next update- after an influx of negative feedback, they're making a few adjustments soas not to *completely* dumb the game down, but still make it significantly easier to understand. Personally, once I understood that "Armor Pen" (short for Armor Penetration) and "defense" literally translates as "level of mobs this is effective against", I found the system to be quite understandable. But I do agree that it was not entirely intuitive to make that connection.
I highly, highly recommend the game, and assuming they don't do anything completely concept-destroying (like having gone through with directly cutting 90% of the progression), will continue to do so.
@Spooky, understand that boss is level 9. Tier 1 (the part of space you can access at the moment) goes from levels 1-10. I suggest getting to tier 9 or 10, and aquiring a firearm (of appropriate level) before beginning that fight. If you do so, it's a piece of cake (you'll die a couple times, but its not a big deal). A level 10 shotgun with good RNG can one-shot that boss.
I see a lot of people complaining the game is too difficult, here and on the official forums. I think its a misstep in communication - primarily due to that whole "armor pen == level" thing, but also due to the tutorial quests skipping a massive step (srsly, from cooking to Tier Boss?!). When you get the beacon quest, ignore it. Go progress one planet at a time, stepping from level to level. Don't be afraid to google for some co-ords for basic Tech and good weapon/treasure finds. Avoid Moon and Desert planets, even though they have more ore, they have harder mobs. Moon has the most ore, but pick a lower level planet than your gear average. Ore types spawned in a world are based on its level (Level 10 will have far more gold and can actually contain platinum). Loot from chests (in villages, etc) is planet-level + 2 (roughly. so a level 10 planet's city chests can contain level 12 gear - a HUGE advantage over tier 1, as every level makes an incredible difference.)
TL;DR: I love this game. Needs a few tweaks, primarily in how its explained, but that's what beta testing is all about.
P.S. heads up, character wipe required on monday (if you accept the update). Sucks, but don't complain because 1.) that's just part of early access gaming and 2.) i'll be dumping loads of info on the wiki over the next week.
