Why don't we have a Starbound thread yet?

The Starbound Chronicle, March 2013!

Interesting bits in there, including really exciting weapon/armor mod info, as well as a little bit (like a .PDF worth) of backstory for one of the races. tl;dr, there are race-exclusive crafting recipes. I wonder how much that'll change our ideas for characters.

More terrain generation samples -- this time with samurai armor and purplizards.

i wish it were scheduled to come out sooner, but am in favor of their taking the time to make the game the best they can.

this roadmap site is an absolutely adorable idea though; bigger game devs could learn a thing or two from it!

Don't get me wrong, I'd much rather have a refined and complete game later as opposed to a buggy mess. This is just one of those games I have a vested interest in and consequently get really impatient for.

But srs I want to build futurebases with you guys.

Wait what? So they've switched from a release in 2013 to a beta in 2013?
That's kind of dissappointing... though I ofcourse prefer a properly polished game to a rushed one. I JUST CAN'T WAIT ANYMORE

Found a cute picture describing a bunch of basic points about the game to everyone who hasn't already done their homework on it:

Awesome Bro

If the characters aren't as small and zoomed out as Terraria, y'know, the camera is closer up, I won't mind and might even give it a go, but damn I hate how far away the camera is on Terraria, my brother doesn't have a problem with it, but it REALLY bugs me.

So I went and bought a diamond tier pre-order, and I've run into a problem. I don't use any namelike aliases online. I have a few characters I've written, but I don't want to just toss their names away. I also have some names that I use repeatedly for videogame characters, like the fact that for some reason I keep making female bretons in Skyrim and naming them Joslin Vette, or the fact that I had a long-running D&D character named Amariel Norovir (yes, she was an elf)

My real issue is that I don't really have anything that actually feels tied to me, instead of merely being something I've used.

It seems to me that zooming in would put you at a disadvantage as you wouldn't be able to see as many oncoming threats or faraway things to go get. The zoom level certainly never bothered me in Terraria. I'd probably be more frustrated by being hit by projectiles lobbed from somewhere I can't see in the viewport.

But they will allow custom resolutions, so yes, you should be able to have the view "zoomed in" by entering a resolution smaller than your monitor's native resolution.

You can also fudge this yourself with software magnifiers.

FYI when this is released, I am planning on doing a giveaway of a few free copies (depending on the final price) to folks interested in participating in the HBG Starbound server.

Will probably involve giving it to whomever writes the coolest backstories for their characters (which they can generate online). Or something along those lines.

I don't mind too much about having less viewing distance, it's just the size of the sprites that really bothers me... I mean I'll admit, I've played 15 hours of Terraria, which isn't much to some people, but for those 15 hours I was constantly whining to my brother that everything is way too small... the game itself wasn't too bad, but seemed pretty repetitive, I did like the boss things though, they were pretty cool, but building houses and stuff, compared to Minecraft, is so bloody tedious and I was relying on other people to make them, because to be honest.../effort

So you'd rather have something like minecraft where a 16x16 image can take up like half the screen?
