Why don't we have a Starbound thread yet?

Starbound begins with you fleeing your homeworld in a space shuttle, just as it’s destroyed by an unknown enemy. With nothing to guide it, the escape pod shoots into space without direction, becoming hopelessly lost in a sea of stars. As luck would have it, the space shuttle makes contact with an abandoned space station and an adventure begins that will take you hurtling across the universe. Starbound contains both quests and story driven missions, buried inside its vast sandbox universe.

I'm pretty sure you've all heard of this game to some degree. The common misconception seems to be that this thing is Terraria in space, and to be fair, that's not entirely inaccurate -- the control scheme and several mechanics seem to be quite similar. The thing is, though, that Starbound offers a metric fuckton more content, in the form of biomes, items, spaceships, customization, and world size. The planet cap for universes is literally 999,999. And you're free to explore -- and change -- any of these planets that tickle your fancy.

Which brings us to the Space Station. Essentially, this is a mobile home base that can be customized throughout the course of the game, and from it players make their way around the galaxy. Eventually, you'll be rocking with a fully-equipped cruiser complete with cloning lab (which is actually used), research deck (also used), and creature holding cells (which, shockingly, is used to house creatures you catch). During your adventures you'll come across NPCs you can recruit for your travels with various skills. They'll accompany you, and be ready at your command. Oh yeah, and the Station also has a Death Star laser which can be used to terraform planets from the stratosphere.

Seriously, this shit's amazing. Why haven't we been talking about this? We're looking at a probable Q1 2013 release. I'm willing to try hosting a dedicated HBG server. Anyone up for it?

Awesome Bro

I still can't get over the fact that it's a Terraria clone, and even if someone gave me a list of over 100 differences, my mind wouldn't be able to differentiate it from Terraria, therefore I won't be playing it, UNLESS, someone buys it for me... hint hint ;)

Jason

Awesome Bro

And it looks like it visually too, I think that's what's putting me off... if it were a 2.5D side scroller, then I'd be able to appreciate it more, but it just looks WAY too similar to Terraria...

Go watch some of the gameplay on YouTube or Twitch. I'm not really trying to convince you to like it, but it really is different, even in the basic combat mechanics.

I actually have a spare computer now. I could try hosting one. Can't promise any quality, though; my bandwidth is pretty terrible.

I would start a server but im pretty sure that our internet company would start throttling the shit out of it? There is a spare computer that is always on that no one really uses.

You can't criticize it for being a Terraria clone ... It's made by the same developer (under a different name). They are basically taking everything they learned from making Terraria, and all the member feedback, and making something they can be really proud of. You can't knock them for that.

Also I can't knock them, period. I am so fucking stoked for Starbound you have no idea.

I will start a StarBound server when it comes out; you can bet your fucking ass on it

This looks cool. I still wish we had a terraria server or even do another one.
Heh I actually just opened up our old HBG Terraria server world the other day for a look-see. It is so cute, and soooo much work went into it.

Actually let me start a thread and if there's enough interest, let's try a new one.

Yeah Starbound looks amazing. And as said above, it looks like Terraria because... well... it IS Terraria, but in space! The same developer making an even better game! :)
I've been watching this game closely ever since it has been announced, can't wait for the release!
My only criticism so far is the fact that I don't like the races, especially the flower and the bird one, which look like they've been ripped straight out of Guild Wars imo.

Hnnng director mode. So a while back Tiy talked in Starbound's IRC about some awesomeness.

[19:58:56] <@Tiy> i have some crazy ideas for after release support
[19:59:53] <@Tiy> after release im going to focus on director mode
[20:00:14] <@Tiy> Director mode is my grand vision
[20:00:15] <@Tiy> haha
[20:00:41] <deebee396> whats director mode?
[20:00:52] <deebee396> like a machinima thing?
[20:01:04] <@Tiy> no
[20:01:06] <@Tiy> basically
[20:01:10] <@Tiy> in director mode
[20:01:19] <@Tiy> players can log into a normal server as "director"
[20:01:30] <@Tiy> players who log in as directors can control *everything*
[20:01:33] <@Tiy> for example
[20:01:43] <@Tiy> heres the example I used last time
[20:01:53] <@Tiy> the players are playing normally
[20:01:54] <@Tiy> on a planet
[20:01:57] <@Tiy> this doesnt stop normal play
[20:02:01] <@Tiy> its not something you have to arrange
[20:02:04] <@Tiy> or make a meeting time for
[20:02:10] <@Tiy> it works with the rest of the game
[20:02:16] <@Tiy> the director logs in, sees the players
[20:02:22] <@Tiy> and then decides to spawn an old man NPC
[20:02:27] <@Tiy> the director then takes DIRECT control of the old man
[20:02:30] <@Tiy> and runs up to the players
[20:02:44] <@Tiy> anything the director says will come from the old man himself
[20:02:53] <@Tiy> so the director would say
[20:02:57] <@Tiy> "Help help! there are space pirates chasing me!"
[20:03:11] <@Tiy> the players can then choose to protect the old man
[20:03:14] <@Tiy> so lets say they build him a house
[20:03:20] <@Tiy> and because the director is controlling the npc
[20:03:22] <@Tiy> the old man can help out
[20:03:23] <@Tiy> too
[20:03:27] <@Tiy> now
[20:03:29] <@Tiy> the house is built
[20:03:36] <@Tiy> the director releases control of the npc and sets him to idle
[20:03:38] <@Tiy> so he stays in the house
[20:03:47] <@Tiy> then spawns a group of space pirates
[20:04:01] <@Tiy> he sets them to passive, and makes them all go towards the house
[20:04:05] <@Tiy> he takes control of the leader and says
[20:04:10] <@Tiy> "give us the old man! and no one gets hurt!"
[20:04:17] <@Tiy> then its up to the players what they want to do
[20:04:22] <@Tiy> they could say no, and defend the house
[20:04:28] <@Tiy> then the director could set them all to aggressive
[20:04:34] <@Tiy> or
[20:04:36] <@Tiy> they could say yes
[20:04:40] <@Tiy> and the director sets the old man to aggressive
[20:04:44] <@Tiy> because he doesnt want to go
[20:04:53] <@Tiy> the players could tunnel into the earth to try to escape
[20:04:56] <@Tiy> and the director could make the space pirates chase them
[20:05:06] <@Tiy> anything can happen essentially
[20:05:10] <@Tiy> when directors are controlling the game
[20:05:14] <@Tiy> the great thing about it all is
[20:05:18] <@Tiy> that its completely transparent
[20:05:22] <@Tiy> the players wont know if a director is there
[20:05:27] <@Tiy> once the director stops controlling things
[20:05:30] <@Tiy> the game doesnt stop
[20:05:32] <@Tiy> or reload
[20:05:33] <@Tiy> or anything like that
[20:05:48] <@Tiy> there are going to be quests
[20:05:51] <@Tiy> but
[20:06:09] <@Tiy> no amount of code will be as imaginative and interactive as a director could be
[20:06:14] <@Tiy> using this system players can have conversations with npcs
[20:06:25] <Disreputable_dog> interesting
[20:06:34] <Disreputable_dog> i can see some people playing as the director all the time
[20:06:46] <Disreputable_dog> though i do worry about some people abusing it
[20:06:54] <@Tiy> well director accounts are limited in access
[20:07:00] <@Tiy> to the people the server admins allow to log in as directors
[20:07:29] <@Tiy> you can have multiple directors
[20:07:33] <@Tiy> and they can go to any planet
[20:09:52] <Disreputable_dog> i mean, the directors could use this to build a planet with, say, the acient ruins of a forgotten civilization, then use the NPC's to point the players towards this planet
[20:10:17] <@Tiy> Disreputable_dog yeah thats entirely possible
[20:10:23] <@Tiy> directors can edit maps very quickly
[20:11:34] <Disreputable_dog> i thought youd have to make the npcs do the building xD
[20:11:36] <@Tiy> as part of character creation
[20:11:45] <@Tiy> no Disreputable_dog you can edit the map very quickly
[20:11:53] <@Tiy> so if you want to prepare a planet and then tell the players about it
[20:12:00] <@Tiy> you can do that
[20:16:13] <Disreputable_dog> well tiy, i have another director mode question! will directors have to manualy trigger events? or will they be able to set things to happen on their own. like, does a director have to be in control of an NPC to make them talk, or could he, say, tell it to say something when the players talk to him? or have things happen when players reach a certain area?
[20:16:40] <@Tiy> thats the kind of thing we wont know ourselves until we get heavily into developing it

So pretty much live quest editing with PvP potential.

In case you haven't seen it, the dev team has released a playable preview of the character creator -- the visual portion, anyways. It's being updated regularly, so if you want to get an idea of what your character looks like pre-game release, here's your chance. When you save, you'll receive a file that you can later import to the game.

I saw it some days ago and played with it a lot. I had figured originally that I'd be one of the plantpeople or humans, but the birdpeople are adorable <3

Here's what I'll probably end up looking like, of any of the species I pick ...:

... Hm, yeah, I definitely like the birdie and plant people the most ...
