Which Rpg had the Best Battle System?

As for Megaten Online - who'd have thought even MMORPGs could be innovated!? Atlus and the Megaten team're actually starting to scare me... is there anything they can't do?!

Basically it's a mixture of vanilla Megaten, Kuzunoha Raidou and it's own new style:

Exploiting weaknesses stuns the enemy for a few seconds, and you have to make good use of a combo/ counter system in order to win battles by knocking the enemy back, knocking them down or putting them on guard "whiff" (Really, really refreshing in an MMORPG). The system effectively allows you to fight enemies at a way higher level than you and win with minimal damage sustained 8-). On the other hand, if you get mobbed, well... it's over for you even if your enemies are at a lower level (Think near permanent stuns if you panic and fail to react quickly enough). It really is a breath of fresh air for MMORPGs, can't believe I forgot to mention that.

Coupled with in-game cinematics (just love the boss intro/ death scenes) and the ability to negotiate with/ recruit demons during battles and scripted encounters/ scripted dungeons... well, it makes for damn fun levelling and a damn good MMORPG.

After watching a few vids, I must go back on my word, Star Oceans battle system is better than Tales of, as they don't allow players to move up or down, while Star Ocean had a wide open battlefield, infact I'm goin searching for that game today...

Tales of the Abyss/Tales of the World:Radiant Mythology had Free Run, which allowed 3-D movement.

Yeah, but... there was never really any reason to use it.

I wouldn't say that. Those spells hurt like hell, as do those Mystic Artes. It's great for dodging those ever so damaging moves. Though this is only true from Hard mode and up

It came out not even a year ago but it was a prett quiet release. Namco pretty much said "lol here guyz!" and no one bought it. Most new tales games get even the slightest bit of advertisement but Abyss was pretty much just released and forgotten.

Yeah, plus Tales of the Abyss was released about a month before FFXII, so that didn't help. Why buy some game you've never heard when there's FUCKING FINAL FANTASY AROUND THE CORNER.

It's basically happened to all of the previous Tales games besides Symphonia. Generally, it's Bamco's fault for not advertising enough.

Speaking of FF I love the Dimension Battle System used in 12, I wonder how 13's gonna top that, though if you ask me, Square is slowly drifting towards an ABS

Slowly drifting? FFXII is the only game in the series recently that doesn't use random battles. (I don't count FFXI).

Personally I thought FFXII's battle system was overrated. It was basically exacly the same thing but with on screen battles. And you didn't control your characters most of the time. The best thing about it was that you could run away from battles... although you did usually end up soaking up a bit of damage and I rarely did it anyway.

By the way isn't FFXIII Versus supposed to use an ABS like kingdom Hearts?

My favorite system must be Grandia's. Which is pretty much why i've been
trying to port it to rmxp for the last few months. Interesting stuff.

Legend of Legaia had a wonderful battle system, too, with the inputting of
your own combo's, finding out what your special attacks are, and stealing
other creature's powers.

Tales of symphonia will be a close third.

Paper Mario a fourth (seriously, timing rocks.)
