I haven't got any next-gen consoles, but i'm really interested in DS games (ff3, ff12)
I prefer the gameboy advance, heaps of games, still coming out with new games (ffvi).

I managed to buy all three (main consoles, I also have a DS and a PSP), and I have to sadly admit that the PS3 is currently 2 things:

1. The biggest disappointment.
2. The least played.

With no real decent launch titles (Resistance may be good, but after having played Gears of War I couldn't even stomach more than 2 minutes of the demo) I found the only reason to play it (and why I bought it before there were a lot of good titles) was for my PS2 games... oh wait, I can't transfer over my saves, or use my lovely Logitech controllers... "designed to be backwards compatible" my rear end.

Add into that serious issues with it's HD capabilities via HDMI; takes a long time to switch resolutions, and I've twice had to seriously fiddle with it to make it get out of a "black screen" mode that required me doing a graphical reset on the thing! (Give me back those 3 hours of my life darnit!)

And yes, I'm using the official Sony HDMI ($60, ouch!) cable.

The only good thing so far is that you can get Go! Sudoku with a decent amount of starter puzzles for free, and that Lemmings is only $6.

And no, I'm not a Sony basher, I got the PS2 days after it first hit the market and although it had a lack of titles, it had NONE of the other problems that currently plague the PS3; a lack of backwards hardware compatability.

So to those of you who have that old 100+ hour, Level 99 FF7 game save, right up there with your uber Legend of Mana and Xenogears/Xenosaga saves, which are probably right next to your FFX and various Suikoden saves... and don't forget Disgea and/or Dark Cloud and Front Mission saves... don't throw out your PS2's yet! There are adapters to move over your games... but good luck finding one even online! Amazon had one when I looked, at double the supposed retail price and from an untrusted seller. Yeah.

Controller-wise, the Xbox controllers were the most awful things ever. Conversely, now the Xbox 360 is the BEST normal controller out. Comfortable with a nice weight, while the PS3 ones are too light for my taste and have that same PS-controller feel that came with the original Playstation... except they broke the L2/R2 buttons. I don't like that fluffy feeling since you can't really tell if it's in or not, and it's not as smooth a feeling or as comfortable a reach as the Xbox one. The Wii-motes are uncomparable to the other two.

I play my Xbox 360 a lot, my Wii quite often, and my PS3? Yeah, not so much yet. I WOULD be playing it if I could move over my save files! Instead my PS2 still reigns supreme and (sadly) looks better with it's S-video cable than the PS3 with it's HDMI and emulation. Of course, that's just on a 32" HDTV, so maybe it looks better on an old tube television.

I hate to say it, but if you're looking for a good starter console, go with an Xbox 360 if you really want shooter-action; I haven't used Live yet, but with built-in voice chat the only thing it will lack is the 60 players on multiplayer, instead limited to around 24 I believe. If you want creative and fun games that don't depend more on insane 1080i (it is beautiful) graphics, then get a Wii. If you want immediate frustration and disappointment, especially if you've been a long-term Sony fan and owned all their previous and current consoles/handhelds... get the PS3.

The PSP not only can do far more; but its library is far better than even the DS (even the legendary exclusives are being put to waste due to the limitations of the system. Come on, I expect more from games now: case and point; FF3 remake for the DS vs. FF7: Crisis Core for the PSP). Titles ranging from every direction; from Metal Gear to Ratchet and Clank. RPGs galore and even some shooting games like Socom.
Ok I own both a ds and PSP and let me tell you i have more fun with the ds than with my psp
The system hasn't even hit 2 years out on the market yet, and it already has far more to offer me than the DS. DS: $120. PSP: $200. 80 dollar difference? I'd pay that extra 80 dollars for a system that offers me SO much and at the same time, offers me so many games that I can’t buy them all!
I'd say that only 5% of Psp games are worth it (i bought my psp for PSX emulation and homebrew though)
DS has alot to offer dont just look for mario, link and pkmn the DS has great titles like FF3, Brain (Series), ect
The DS has its strong points, but its games are in the past. PSP is the future. A beautiful long screen LCD screen with the graphics that rival that of the PS2. Which look BEAUTIFUL on a screen that size. An online game play that, lets face it; is great, for people who love to challenge others in ACTUAL games, rather than things like Tetris.
Well ask the numerous people who are raging beacuse the wifi is too slow on the PSP. Fact Tetris never dies in years but SOCOM yes it will fade in the next year

The next generation should offer you more for your buck. Not only is it only 80 dollars more than the DS (which, I'm sure that gap used to be much less. What did the DS start at? 150 or even more?) but all that it gives you... I look at how little the DS gives you for a slightly lower price, and then I look at the PSP. That’s where handhelds should be going.
Get an ipod or PMP player it much more a value for it

all consoles kinda suck atm (excluding portables)
1-Wii: I used to want it but then got Zelda for GC and realized it's the same thing but $200 cheaper. Wii without Zelda: TP would be total garbage. I had hopes for Wario Ware but it utterly sucked. Seriously, Zelda is the only game with good score for Wii, and it's also on Gamecube. Also, the Wii is ridiculously weak, it's just a gameplay innovation, I mean it's ok but it's almost the same stuff as GC wtf?
2-PS3: after Sony owning nintendo in the *** with PSONE and PS2 (hell PS2 sold like 4 times what gamecube did) I expected PS3 to be a success as soon as released. But what the ****. So far it's a total deception. And seriously, I wouldn't pay so much for a console that...
a.Blu-Ray format is still on doubt, porn industry chose HD-DVD. (not a joke, this was crucial on VHS vs Betamax)
b.It's losing exclusive titles that made it considreable...(Virtua Fighter 5, Unreal Tournament 2007, Assassin's Creed, and *rumor*Devil May Cry 4*rumor* [DMC would hurt badly]).
c.FF13 won't be released on 2007.
d.Library of games is TOTAL bull**** atm. Resistance < Gears of War.
3.Xbox360. A friend has it, and well i liked dead rising, gears of war...but that's it lol. I don't know, I just don't like it.

so yeah, next-gen home consoles suck for me. however, it's too early to say they're doomed or something like that. I think Wii has a future due to its surprising economic success, and well, I don't think sony will give up. and microsoft has halo3 coming soon.

Hmm lets see, the good old Next Gen console debate ^_^

Right lets see, the Wii, I'd get one if they were in stock and if I wasn't so stingy (damn me *shakes fist*)

The PS3. I don't trust Sony, none of you should. I could go on a massive ramble at their crapness but I'm not going to, but I am going to say that first they said that PS2 was better than Xbox because it was cheaper and then said that PS3 is better than Xbox 360 because it's more expensive. Make up your mind! Plus apparently they're melting all the discs which they said the 360 was bad for doing and that they weren't going to do that... hmm well thats a lie. Oh and PS3 looks like a George Forman Grill:
http://www.highdefforum.com/gallery/data/511/PS3GrillTease.JPG

Xbox 360. I really like them, they have a few minor bugs, but then again all consoles do. The whole 'Ooh they crash and melt my disks' is a load of bollocks , they don't do any of that. They've got good games like Gears of War (which has annoying Online bugs) and stuff. They also own Rare so really good games will start coming out; they've already got Viva Pinata and soon we'll have Banjo Threeie (woot ^_^ )

So yeah Xbox 360s are great and it would look like Wiis are too (except the name... You can come round and play on my Wii)

You can come round and play on my Wii

Lol I've made a whole dictionary with wii puns already (just gotta upload it!) but yeah I got my wii, I don't really like xbox 360's perception of the gaming industry and PS3 is gonna be a hit or miss, so I'm not so sure. Getting my DS next week though ^_^

I don't think I'll be getting any of the consoles...none of them have really impressed me at all; they don't have any good games. I'll probably just build a new gaming machine in a few months so I can play games like Crysis.

Probably an Xbox 360, since the PS3 just isn't worth the money right now, and Wii's games seem too gimmicky right now (Excluding LoZ:TP). Plus, Dead Rising has to be one of the most addicting games I've ever played, and Gears of War just plain rocks. And it has the best online service anyways.

Wii, hands down. I am a Nintendo fanboy, and probably always be. I want the gaming industry to change, with just Microsoft and Sony it would become stagnant and die. Nintendo is gaming's life blood. Who made the R.O.B.? Case closed, Nintendo wins.

When I feel like playing mini-games, I'll get a Wii.

For now I'm exceptionally happy with my PS360*.

(That is, I have a PS3 and a XBOX360.)

The PSWii60 will have to come later.

As for the whole Resistance VS Gears thing, I don't think it's a fair comparison, but as far as I'm concerned the only thing Gears has over Resistance is the Art direction and visual quality. I had more fun playing Resistance, to be honest, but Gears is what I pop in when I want to impress my friends with my TV.

The PS3 launch line up is scads better than the 360's, which was frankly abysmal (Especially for those of us who had CoD2 on PC)

Now - the 360 controller is the BEST? Have you ever played a game with it?

It has nice face buttons and nice analog sticks, but the bumpers, start and select buttons, and d-pad are absolute garbage. I can't tell you how many times I hit left on the d-pad to look at my watch in Dead Rising only to have Frank frikkin drop his weapon (D-pad down). It's not that I suck at pressing buttons either, I was corn-fed on Street Fighter and can accurately roll a d-pad with the best of them. The triggers are ok, but the cumpers are awkwardly positioned. Never mind the fact that you if you factor in the almost necessary play and charge kit, the things cost what, $75. It's either that or you replace the batteries every 5 hours.

Now before you start screeching at me for bringing this sort of dicussion in here, I will of course concede the SIXAXIS is not a perfect controller. The triggers are shaped kinda funny and for those of you who care, it doesn't rumble.

And no, the PS3 does not melt disks. It's the 360 that eats your disks if you so much as touch it while it's running.

I'm not argueing for or against either one, seeing as how I own and enjoy both, but let's not mislead people into thinking either is the holy grail :P

When the dust settles, I'll probably end up with all of the consoles. I've got my eyes on the PSP again for the same reason the PS3 remains in the back of my head: Gradius. The pull of Gradius is very strong, and I usually cave in and buy the system that has it. However, if the PS3's Gradius game is cancelled, the PS3 will be dead to me.
I'm definately getting a 360, as Treasure has pledged to put the 360 first and I loooove Treasure's games.
Already have a Wii and a DS, so eventually the whole gang will be here if all goes the way they're supposed to.

I dunno on that controller bit, my wife is VERY picky about her controllers and while we CAN use the Sixaxis, it's like playing a crappier version of the PSOne style controller because the L2/R2 buttons have no feel to them.

I will admit the D-pad for the Sixaxis is better... but that's the ONLY thing. And that's only true if you're using only the Left, Right, Down and Up options, and not using it like you would in an old-school fighting game.

Beyond the fact that I am more comfortable when playing with the 360 controller than even with my lovely Logitech ones for the PS2 (WHICH I CAN'T USE ON THIS NEW SYSTEM!) I trust my wife's judgement because she's not into the consoles, just the games, and she hates controllers that are hard to use or uncomfortable, regardless of which system they are on. We're judging this solely on how often we whine about the controllers or take a quick break to rest our hands. So far all of us, my wife, myself, and my 6 years old son, are MUCH more comfortable with the 360 than the PS3 controller.

Oh and YES, we have played games with it. Have you? (I'm sorry, did that question offend you as much as it offended me?) Keep in mind that until several months ago, I was a die-hard Xbox HATER. I've already said my bit on this, so no need to repeat my reasoning. Apparently our hands must be smaller or mutated or something.

Also, I'm not sure what Resistance has over Gears of War; perhaps it's got the old-school Counter-strike feel that some people must like. Heavens know my wife won't TOUCH FPS usually, but she'll play Gears of War hands down because they made it fun. We both spend about an hour trying the Demo version of Resistance out, and became nothing but frustrated with it; to be honest we've never liked FPS on the console until Gears of War because until then they really kind of bit compared to the computer.

I've been neutral in the console war since day one; if anything I've always been a Sony-boy because of Square Enix's support for the console. However, the PS3 has had an absymal launch, the controller is a major disappointment (also it's $50.00 for a new one, and there are no alternate styles or third party ones) and I can't move my save files over to my PS3. That is easily the most stupid thing they ever did. Why the heck can I read stupid SD and other mini-cards on my PS3; I have a computer for that! It does it better! Let me read my old save files, because I am NOT replaying Xenosaga I, II, and III over just to RECREATE my old game!

Console playtime these days? Wii: 25%, Xbox 360: 35%, PS3: 5%, PS2: 30%. I'm insanely disappointed that I had to reconnect and use my PS2 instead of my $600 PS3. Backwards compatability my backside!

One last thing:
When I feel like playing mini-games, I'll get a Wii.

I'm willing to throw the PS3 any bones it may have earned, but I stayed away from making large judgements on it until I owned and used one myself. I have 5 games for the Wii, and I'm only unhappy with 1 (which isn't even mine, my son wanted it for Christmas and they seem to enjoy it). My PS3? We've gone through 3 different titles (we use Gamefly) and have sent each back within 2 days.

Our PS3 also suffers from horrible resolution changes and long signal adjust times using HDMI... that was kinda disappointing too, but I'm willing to wait for the firmware that will hopefully help fix that.

Overall? I think Sony will still be leading the consoles in about 6-8 months, but they really set themselves back with this new system. If you're a die-hard Sony fan you'll love it (because you're willing to overlook faults due to the fan-boi-factor), if you're not, you'll be semi-happy if you don't own and never have owned a PS2 and memory card, and if you have, on average I think you'll be rather disappointed.

I think Penny Arcade summed it up pretty well:

http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/02/10

I think the point here is that, regardless of what we personally say, the market does a good job in speaking for itself. We spout our own personal opinions and all that, but in the end the market really shapes around what people want. I had to spend a long night out in the cold for my Wii. I had to walk into Wal-Mart and ask for a PS3.

I don't buy movies, or music, and my wife doesn't buy shoes or junk, so all our spare money for "stuff" goes towards games and consoles, hence we own each handheld and next gen.

I am not anti-Sony; far from it I want my PS3 to be worth it's money! However, as of right now, it was NOT. The facts don't change. The current titles offer very little to a very limited hard-core crowd. Backwards compatability is a sham as you can't move over your save files. For all the consoles around you can't find a second controller because no one around here bothers stocking them (so multiplayer ANYTHING is out of the picture because you can only use the PS3 Sixaxis). It also totes the most annoying user interface; the PSP GUI. I liked it on the PSP, hate it on the PS3. When you've got about 6 demos in your game list, it gets really annoying to scroll through it. Also, why can't I use a wallpaper?! I want to customize my $600 purchase; but it's not coming until like, what, March? April?

I'm sure the Xbox 360 was haunted by just as many launch issues... the problem is that I didn't get mine until well after launch. I trusted Sony enough to just go buy one, assuming all the bad stuff I heard was from Nintendo-fan-bois just ripping on the system because of the Wii craze.

So far your reason for not wanting a Wii is because it's "mini-games?" I'm sorry, but I dunno where you've gotten all this Wii experience, maybe at a friends house? My Wii offers me the most quality current and OLD games (virtual consoles has given me access to several very long classic games, some of which I NEVER GOT TO PLAY!) and has easily more play time. Did I mention I can plug in all my old Wavebird GameCube controllers, our GameCube memory cards, and play almost all our GameCube games without ANY HASSLE in Progressive (480P) mode on our Wii? We SOLD our GameCube because there's nothing the Wii can't do better, and a nice library of about 12 GameCube games moved over without a hitch. Our PS2 games, all freaking (about 36 of 42 of them thanks to long save files), are fairly useless on the PS3.

You know what else is funny? On my PS3, my most played title is... Lemmings! Yes! A mini-game is what I use my PS3 for! I find the confict of our situations interesting.

Since this thread was about which one to get, I toted the 360 as a better purchase, or "holy grail" as you put it, because right now IT IS! If you want to get more for your money, the 360 will be a much more intelligent purchase at THIS POINT than a PS3. That may/will change I'm sure, but right now, if I could get one console, it would be the Wii -> 360 -> PS3.

I am happy with my Wii60 combo right now. I would get a PS3 but I don't feel like paying for potential. I may reevaluate my decision when MGS4 comes out but right now they don't have anything that justifies the purchase for me.

My comment about actually playing with the 360 controller was an emphatic joke. An exaggeration. Not meant to offend.

My comment about the Wii was that the only games I would by on it right now are mini games. Wee! Wii sports! Wee! Wario Ware! I have Zelda on my Gamecube already. I wasn't making a statement as to the console's quality at a whole, only making a personal statement that the game line-up is fairly short of being robust.

I don't know what's wrong with your stores, but every store that ever carries SIXAXIS controllers around here have them in stock. The memory card adapter? They've been just about everywhere here for like a month. Hell, I'll send you mine if it's really got you so miffed.

Your resolution problems? I've never had that problem - but I'm willing to bet it's your TV, or some funky settings you are using. My PS3 is always up and ready to go when I switch to HDMI, it boots up fast, and when it bumps from 1080i down to 720p on occasion it does so without a hitch.

I do agree that the 360 is a better purchase right now, and I thought I mentioned that (I seem to be wrong) but I also prefer not to be so short-sighted. Hell, I got the 360 for Mass Effect which isn't out yet, and until them I have to be content with Gears of War and Dead Rising which are the only games out right now I've enjoyed.

I loathe the concept of the VC on the Wii. Seriously, $5 for a NES game I either already own or haven't played yet? Not interested. I can't think of any of the old games I don't own that I care enough about to drop $5 on. Am I stingy? Yes, but I'm in college and I'm allowed to be.

And for the record, I like the XMB on the PS3. I am, of course, waiting for folders and background images, but if that's what influences people's decisions, there's something obsessive compulsive going down.

I'm serious though.

Give me your address and I will mail you my memcard adapter. That seems to be half your problem right there.

Oh, and Lemmings is SO not a minigame.

Actually the save file thing IS a huge point for me; and you can't get the adapters around here. I was surprised to see them selling online now, when I checked about two weeks ago I could only find one for sale on Amazon.com, and it was by an unreliable seller.

If they're that easy to find, then their price of $15.00 is easily an acceptable solution.

Assuming you can get an adapter then, about half my issues with the PS3 are indeed non-issues at this point. :)
