Jacob Bannon once again shows NO-ONE will be taking his spot as best lyricist soon. First "new" single (since the album will have 3 songs that where released earlier, "on my shield" being the most impressive).
to live the life you want you’ve abandoned those in need
a necessary casualty or so you believe
your wake will always travel and well up in the eyes
of those that you sacrificed in order to survive
i’m that aimless arrow lost from my very start
violence without purpose born of broken hearts
no one will ever guide me as i sail through the air
now I just bring sadness in those who choose to care
i know the tears they’re weeping and the damage they will take
it’s the curse of restlessness and the weight of your mistakes
they are those that love you and those that need you more
then the sense of gravity banging down your door
i’m that aimless arrow lost from my very start
violence without purpose born of broken hearts
no one will ever guide me as i sail through the air
now i just bring sadness in those who choose to care
aimless arrow aimless arrow aimless arrow lost from the start
Y'know I may lack any sort of cred, but I find the posted lyrics to be terribly adolescent. In that sense of when we come out of the simple times when everything is about liking icecream and suddenly we push hard in the opposite direction - everything must be "dark". Simply put, they are devoid of a certain kind of... (for lack of a better term) ...
elegance. (note: I accuse Led zeppelin of the same thing, so it doesn't necessarily preclude good music.)
I'm not on any footing to declare a "best" lyricist but I would say, in my current state of mind, my favorite lyricist is Roger Hodgson, and my favorite piece of lyrics is "Your Latest Trick". Billy Joel also ranks up high in there somewhere, he's got a fantastic portfolio.
